Hell yeah man sounds good to me! We will have to link up soon. I tried looking back at our old messeges but i think they got deleted with the update. Ive still got the indoor going. I just harvested 1 tent and ive got my other flower tent flipped earlier this week. With the outdoor gojng to shit i lost 2 blue dream 1 purple afghan kush and 2 purple punch. I just harvested my other blue dream from the indoor run so im excited to see how she turns out and in the tent i just flupped i still have another purple afghan kush. So luckily those genetics werent wasted ill just have to wait longer to see jow they turn out
Hey @emeraldbullfrog glad to see youre still up and about. You still waiting to flip the veg tent?
Itās a learning experience for all of us. Youāre doing great. Your doing a fantastic job living up to over grow!!
Hey seeds
Yeahā¦ ā¦ more like theyāre all waiting on me to flip āem Itāll happen soon. We have warm weather at the moment and itās perfect for Getting Shit Done
Weāve had some home projects and work things that have taken a lot of energy between myself and my wife
Now that weāve taken care of other priorities itās time for me to shift my focus back to the garden
Thanks for the kind words @Emeraldgreen! Great to see you here at the Pad
Trying my best to follow the examples I see from the rest of you fine folks!
So many threads to visit. I try to get to as many as possible, just not enough time
I would add not to judge your progress against anyone else. Itās your journey no one elseās.
Ahh yea i know the feeling man. Well good luck with everything and i hope you find a bunch of time for the garden
Lesson Time
RED STEMS!
Went through a cold spell for a few weeks last month. I didnāt have my heater set up for the tent. Learned an interesting lesson because of it.
The main stems on most of my plants turned red/purple. (Pics to come later)
It had me quite worried!
This seems to be caused primarily by a deficiency in Mag and/or P, but itās the way it happened that is more interesting. The plants have been getting nutrients with nearly every watering. They should have been getting nearly the same amount of nutrients as they had been receiving over the summer. Plain water (with Epsom salt) was given once or twice, but not so frequently as to account for a sudden deficiency.
What changed?
The lower temperature seems to be part of the explanation.
The temps in the tent dipped down below 50* F during several nights in October. Daytime always reached above 60* F, and usually reaching 70* F or higher. But the low nighttime temps seem to be a real problem.
It just so happens that plantsā ability to uptake nutrients can be affected by temperature. Low temps may inhibit the the update of Phosphorus and Magnesium, specifically. These seemed to be the biggest parts of my problems!
I have installed the heater in the tent. Aiming for a temperature of 80* F, keeping within the range of 76* F to 84* F. Plants are on the mend and looking all the better for it
New leaf growth is green and healthy. New growth of stems is turning back to green instead of red. And the leaves are praying for the first time since September!
Iāve noticed the same thing growing in a Minnesota basement. Last winter my daytime temps struggled to get past the low 70s and my plants showed pretty much every deficiency in the books. Iām considering getting a heater myself, or maybe, just maybe, fucking around with some HID lighting.
In my research I found several things that could lead to the issue. Temperature is the #1 thing that seems to make the biggest impact on all the other things that contribute to it.
RE: lighting, it seems plants grown under LEDs need more supplemental Magnesium compared to grown outdoors or under HIDs. Iām not sure of the exact reason.
Lower temps also caused issues for me that almost look like pH imbalance. Tons of leaves with spots on them, crinkly dying leaf tips, wilting, etc. New growth coming in light green / almost yellow. Red veins in the leaves. It would have been a nightmare trying to address each of these things on their own!
Luckily, Iām seeing improvements in everything after only a couple of days running the heater. Low temps may not be my only problem, but they are close to the root of my problems (pun!)
Oh and I forgot to mention, gnats. I found a few a while back and the problem increased during the last month. My theory is that the lower temps caused the plants to use their water more slowly, and the soil kept wet for longer than usual.
Drying back has helped.
Yellow sticky traps have been set all over the tent. Not all my plants seem to have the gnats. Some are unaffected, while other plants seem to be the main targets. Mango Hashplant from @JustANobody has been one of their favorites
Luckily I am seeing fewer new gnats on the sticky traps. May need to pick up BTi / mosquito bits just to be on the safe side
Good work running down a solution to the symptoms you were seeing! I am probably going to be trying to keep tent temps up a bit more on my next run, but still brainstorming the best way to do that with minimal utility costs. My basement doesnāt get toooo chilly, but I think theyād thrive more at higher temps.
This thread has some good heater discussion and options: Space heater safety question
Good luck!
Also! Since youāre running soil, I just encountered this:
So maybe check those out too?
Ooo, Iāve never heard of encapsulated Nematodes. Thatās pretty cool. Thanks C!
Feeling pretty good about the heater I am using. Itās the AC Infinity Thermoforge 3 [LINK ] - basically, it sits outside the tent and blows hot air through a tube like this:
Iām still fiddling with it to figure out the ideal settings. At least for now itās proven to me that having the correct temp range makes the biggest difference on the issues Iām trying to fix. Hooray for proof of concept!
Now I need to set it up how Iād actually like it to be, instead of leaving it how I first tried it during the quick 'n dirty test run.
That said, with the need to run this in the garage, I am not looking forward to seeing how this will impact the electricity billā¦
Ah, the thermoforge is probably a solid choice. Maybe use some rigid insulation to make a box
of sorts around the tent and heater? Not sure thatās feasible, just the first thing that came to mind.
Good idea
Great minds think alike
The tent is mildly insulated from the floor with a layer of old welcome mats. Itās one of the (many) pieces I have in a mental list of upgrades Iād like to do. We have an old rug in the garage that would make for another good layer on the floor. And I have the annoying tendency of keeping some extra cardboard boxes around at all times, so I think those would make a good layer for between the tent and the wall. Maybe even on top, with some unused extra blankets.
Another good step to take would be to moving the driver for the LED from outside the tent to the inside. That thing generates a bit of heat.
Watch out for mold on the cardboard boxes, whenever I have had them against a wall they seem to be moisture magnets.
Those bits have obliterated the fungus gnats I had. I put them in a gallon jug with water and water every time with that jug. When bits run low I add more bits.i have seen 1 gnat in the last week.
Sounds like thatās the way to go
Gonna pick some of those up on payday
In the meantime, bottom watering has helped to keep the tops of the pots drier
Good looking out! Thatās a lesson I do not want to learn the hard way
I appreciate the tips from you guys @Gadarien and @RainToday
I decided to pare down on the volume of plant mass that was crammed into the Tuba Fort. Aka, I got rid of some plants to make more space
The decision was pretty easy. (Thereās a reason I havenāt shared pictures in a while. Probably should have done for learninās sake.) Honestly, it made me feel much better and has me excited about what to do next. The space is still mostly full after removing four of the largest plants, so that goes to show how jam packed I had them all in there poor little things
The more āoptimisticā news is that this freed up some valuable floor space to up-pot a few strains from solo cups to half gallon pots. Mango HP, Alien OG, Frankenstein, CH2, and probably another that I canāt remember bc Iām high.
Clones in the dome have been cooperating better since adjusting temps in the tent
One snip of LA Pure Kush has shown roots!
3x snips of Platinum Lemon Cherry Gelato have shown roots!
All four young ones were planted in soil last night
