Indoor grow ilumination and ventilation

Hello guys and girls, greetings from Brazil!!
I’m starting an indoor grow, and I found myself thinking about the ventilation and lighting measurements for my space. I’ll be growing inside a closet, so the dimensions aren’t as standardized as in a commercial grow. The dimensions are as follows: 80x50x95, with 80cm in width, 50cm in depth, and 95cm in height. Could you help me figure out how many watts of light would be necessary using the SAMSUNG 301H LED, or any other one you recommend, and also the volume required for ventilation? I asked ChatGPT, but I trust your experience more! I’ll attach some pictures of my space.
Thank you very much

Welcome to OG!

A few questions that come to mind:

  • Why do you want to use a wooden closet? Is there an advantage for you compared to, say, a grow tent? Grow tents have several advantages, primarily because they’re equipped with outlet / inlets for standard vent tubing and a structure for holding a lamp. They are also usually light leak proof.
  • Is noise from ventilation an issue?
  • Is light leakage an issue?
  • Is the smell in the room a concern?

Also, a height of 95 cm is pretty much the lowest you can go for plants, even if you switch to a 12/12 light cycle right from the start. You’d need to be really picky about the strains and use some shallow pots too.

What the ChatGPT had to say about it?

Thank you, Joe!
I’m using the wooden closet because it’s more discreet and already part of my space, so it wouldn’t draw much attention. I’m planning to insulate it thermally and block any light from passing through as well. I thought about using a grow tent, but I think I can easily adapt the closet and, as a result, have more space.
The noise from the ventilation wouldn’t be a big issue, but it’s better to avoid it. I was thinking of using computer fans, as some are really quiet, and it would also be easy to adapt some kind of carbon filter to block the smell.
And I was a bit worried about the lights being too close to the plants. That made me quite anxious as well, but I think it would be better than a PC grow.

What is the range of air temperatures that will enter the closet?

I will leave the actual calculation to somebody with first hand experience with LED and how much of heat they emit.

But from my experience, if you plan to use a carbon filter, that pretty much rules out PC vents. While they can have sufficient airflow, what they lack is primarily the static pressure that’s needed to overcome the resistance of a filter.

Airflow is the amount of air that passes through a fan, vent, or duct system within a certain period of time. It indicates the volume of air that the fan can move.

Static pressure refers to the resistance that a fan or vent encounters when moving air through a system. It’s the measure of how much pressure a fan must create to push or pull air against this resistance.

Welcome Aboard @snotinho !!! You’re in the right place my friend. There is alot of options for you with lights and ventilation. I will say the smaller the space the harder it is to keep them happy. I would recommend going with an adjustable LED light. That way you can control the power as needed. This will also help with heat ect. They would most likely be no need for insulation as typically you’re trying to dissipate as much heat as possible. You can definitely get a good amount of air circulating through the cabinet with just a few computer fans. AC infinity makes these various power levels fairly inexpensive. I would say 100 and 200 W light would be more than enough. Just make sure it’s adjustable. Ventilation would be fairly easy. An intake down low. And extraction Fan set high on the cabinet. Consider posting on the introduction page. It is the page we welcome all new gardeners.

I agree with @LemonadeJoe about the carbon filters and computer fans being generally under powered. You could potentially be OK as I have definitely done it. Just consider that it will be harder to remove Humidity if you’re only using small computer fans, trying to force that humid air through a carbon filter with low powered fan Is not very productive. I would probably go with the 4 inch extraction fan with the carbon filter with a speed control on the fan. I think AC Infinity will have the most options at cheap prices. This will allow you to move larger amounts of air and really clean the air. This Will also be more capable at removing humidity. Cheers !!!

@snotinho I saw this post a while back and thought it could be a good read for you or group you maybe interested in. Cheers !!!

Thank you @BTYGMO! Do you think a 120W quantum board would be sufficient? I found someone selling a kit of equipment for a good price, along with exhaust fans and such, all for the price of just the lamp if bought new.
I attached a photo of the lamp in a grow space measuring 60x60x160 cm

I’ll check the topic; here in Brazil, access to things is quite difficult… Thanks!

This does seem like the right size light. A lot of us here on OG are trying to minimize costs by not buying unnecessary items. So I believe you’re in the right place my friend. If this light is available in your budget it should work well. The only other thing to consider would be fans and filters. I am sure if you struggle to find a necessary item you need we could help you locate it or possibly one of us could have one available for you. Not sure how shipping works for you in Brazil and what restrictions you may have to deal with for shipping requirements? Cheers !!!

200w would probably do for ya in that space, leds still get warm tho and that space will warm up fast. If it was me I would get a small 4 inch inline and carbon filter with a speed controller to quiet it down. You can get all in one on Amazon for $100. Mount it on the outside so it doesn’t eat up your grow space.
Paint the inside flat white and drape a blanket over the front to avoid light leaks. The fan will still pull air in through the blanket and doors. Only run 3 maybe 4 small autos at a time.
That’s what I’d do if I was using that

first thing i would do is grab another closet and set on top of that one and make it bigger without looking too odd. i’ve also seen folks use old tv cardboard boxes to cover up a plywood box.

That space is begging for a High Stress Training grow…

The master of small space growing posts regularly, check out his grow:

I think you will find it an interesting read. :+1:

There’s some seriously great comments here.
Wtg everyone!

I will add…
I have a 2×3×4ft wooden cabinet in my grow space. It has a 100w Maxisun quantum board. It was my starting space. It’s been flowered in a lot, but mostly used for babies and clones now-a-days.
I can tell ya - it will get hot. And humid.
Keep in mind, I live in a dry mountainous climate aswell. No good.
Simple fix:
Cut a hole in the ceiling of the cab and install a bathroom ventilation fan! Easy peasy. Works great.

Best of luck with your endeavors.
And welcome to Overgrow!
