Landrace Expansion & Trade

I discovered the reason behind the drooping plants in this particular case. It’s the cold weather that’s been doing it. No wonder they looked unhappy, they were unhappy. Poor tropical plants forced to live in Upstate New York. We had frost June 14th and June 15th. Latest I’ve ever seen it happen by the way. The durban’s and the pulgas both showed this drooping condition. They snapped out of it when the warm weather hit. I didn’t do anything else different.

The Best Method I have used for storing pollen is this:

Basics need
-Baking flour or corn starch

  • Gel caps (can be obtained from health food store or pharmacy)
  • then something to store caps in…pill container, test tube with rubber stopper…or at the very least… a ziploc bag

Once you have harvested the mature pollen by shaking it onto a piece of glass or mirror…Mix pollen 1 part pollen to 10 parts flour…The flour will act as a desiccant yet still allow you to easily use it at a later time…Place the mixture in multiple gel caps for future use and seal them…In turn place these gel caps in a secondary container for additional protection from moisture. You can add silica beads to container if you desire…If you plan to use the pollen in the next 4-6 weeks you can store it in the fridge…For longer storage, up to a year, put it in the depths of the freezer where it is not exposed to freeze/thaw…
Remember when you use the pollen…You need to take the capsule out and let it thaw…preferably in a fresh ziploc bag…this will prevent precipitation from compromising the pollen…Allow it to thaw for a couple hours in cool dark place…
Grab your paint brush and dust away…

  • Remember when pollen is taken out…you’re pretty much “one and done”…not sure of the viability of refreezing…hence multiple gel caps

Cheers

Excellent idea Lefty, thanks for sharing it. I wouldn’t have thought that pollen would last 9 months in the freezer, let alone in a plastic tote. Great info. :vulcan_salute:

It’s all a humidity thing. As long as you keep the humidity very low, you can use it for a long time. I have kept it longer in the freezer, but most of the time I don’t bother. I keep pollen from my best males in the tote, and then just break seal when I want to use it.

I’m still using Malawi/Panama pollen from a plant @8k_feet gave me. I think we collected it September 2019. It’s starting to lose viability at this point, but it’s had a pretty good run so far.

EDIT: The only thing you need to watch for is the dehumidifier to saturate. The humidity will start to creep up over a few weeks and you need to take it out and plug it in for 12-24 hours to recharge it. I’ve found when you unplug it, it’s still hot because it “bakes” the water off the dessicant. It’s good to let it cool in a sealed environment, but not the same box you have pollen in. Usually it takes several months to saturate in a small tote.

That’s great info right there! Worth repeating for sure! I’m going to work on getting something like this right away. Question for you regarding the cannabiogen Durban… do you remember how much they stretch? I’m getting ready to induce flowering soon, and I don’t know if I should up pot, or leave them in the one gallon containers they are in. They went in these 1 gallon containers only about a week and a half ago maybe two weeks. If possible I would like them to finish at around 4 -5 feet. I’ve been purposely keeping them small, but then it just occurred to me they will be flowering shortly, and they are less than a foot tall. It may end up being my favorite smoke this year, so I’d like to make sure I have a fair amount. As is typical, the nicest one is a male. But a beautiful branchy smelly male. So smelly I knew it was a female until it wasn’t. Has more of a female structure than a male structure. Two mutants out of eight plants too. There is one that is trifoliate, and one that topped itself upon germination, did nearly nothing for a whole entire month, and suddenly in the last week and a half has started to grow and looks like a female. Normally I try to save mutants to smoke at least. Sometimes you get lucky.( I had a triple power plant that was very healthy otherwise years back. I had it in my head that a plant like this could yield 50% more due to 50% more buds sites). the main stem has this mutation, but not the side branches. Hopefully I got the word trifoliate right…

Do they sell a mini Dehumidifiers at any of the chain stores like Walmart?

I can’t remember. Are you running the CBG Durban F2s or the “Triple Durban”? The CBG Durbans can get a bit wild. They’re not the stretchiest sativas I’ve ever grown by a longshot, but they still stretch enough to make your life difficult. Triple Durban might not have the same amount of stretch, due to using a squattier Dutch/Landrace hybrid with the CBG Durban.

Bookmarking this, you should post on general thread for correct practices. I use those humidifiers in my jars during curing. Trying to find a stamp die for my press to knock out rectangles in the lids and snap them in with a thin bead of silicon.

Its Cannabiogen Durban( f4 now I think ?). 10 to 14 weeks. It’s been cold here till recently. They didnt like that I can tell you. They’ve outgrown their mutations as far as slow growth goes, but they were slow even indoors with heat. These last 5 or so days of warmth have pushed them into a higher gear, and the plants are looking happy now. How long does yours flower for? Has it been in colder conditions? I’d love to try it sometime. Did I ask if you are growing Lesotho? I remember that one being on your to-do list if I recall correctly. And that was from a private Source correct? Not from thelandraceteam? Supposed to be very Hardy like Himalayan varieties.

We shall see in a week, the two triples will be showing sex, looks like 2 fems, if so one will go outside to go back in veg and give you an idea if they will finish at 42N. I’ll post pics tomorrow, like to see them and CBG pics from @Upstate side by side. Triples have great close structure and exhibiting medium stretch.

Idk how much interest there would be but i have some mazar-i-sharif landrace from generic seeds id happily share 10 of if anybody wanted to reproduce them. There is a good write up about them on glg, i chose the #9 mom… id only ask for 20 or 30 f2s back so i can stash them away for the future and the rest would be all yours

I was tempted to take cuttings and do the same thing… let them go naturally to check flowering initiation time, but I have no place to put them. I’ll keep my fingers crossed that both of yours are females for that reason, but a little pollen wouldn’t hurt either…I’ll post some pics tomorrow too. Hey! Just read yr new post. Good taste my friend. I got #9 too lol!

That #9 had that look about it. I didn’t even see where it was from. Where do I find it( generic seeds)? Didn’t see write up on glg.
.

I’m good on the Beldia, have so much other things going I still have 6 seed of it. I have a few males about 3 weeks in.
bangi haze that I got 2M/0F and a MTF. Brutal Paw has a late show and all three turned out female so one may go outside and one will be bred back with a few Strong Sativas , bangi And Vietnam Black. Will let the third finish indoors.

That’s great to hear. I was a little worried they wouldn’t stay tamed.

Ah ok yeah. I couldn’t remember if I had sent you some or not. So you’re growing from the same stock mine were from probably. Yeah they’ll stretch quite a bit then. But they’re kind of medium to low stretch compared to other sativas that have similar airy bud structure. So if you’ve grown a really tropical sativa before, then these won’t feel too bad in comparison.

I’m not yet… about the only thing I’m trying to get done right now is backcross my Panama Haze once or twice.

I’m wanting to do the triple Durban. How many weeks flo? Not super bad is it?

I’m not sure but my guess is 10. @Instg8ter is doing the first run as we speak.

If I induce flowering at one foot, should I leave them in a 1 gallon pot for some of the flowering or transplant soon as I switch them? 4-5 feet is ideal. (3-6 is acceptable) I think yr right about different batch of seeds. ( maybe mine were old?) Could mutations be from cold nights? Other types in same conditions didn’t mutate. But they aren’t sub tropical either.
Regarding stretch, my limited experience with sativas was purple malawi and ace panama. 3 or 4x stretch. You think I could expect something similar?

I was stoked because they came free with a pack of the azad kashmir which is what i was really after. #9 was said to be one of the most stable inside and was extra frosty and pretty outside. There is a write up and explanation here. https://www.greatlakesgenetics.com/product/mazari-9/
