Let's see your worm bins!

They are probably Eisenia Fetida… (AKA red wigglers)

That is the environment they like.

I just fed a bucket of dandelions and a big smoothie (carrot & potato peelings, tea leaves etc.) to the big bin I’ve started in the garage.

Yep that’s them Can they go in the bin? What about the soil, needles, rotted stems and leaves? Just a little, a lot or non.

All good feed stock, just stay away from dairy, citrus etc.
We produce more food waste than the little green worm bin in the kitchen can handle (scratch cooks) so the big bin is picking up the slack. I’m looking forward to see how they handle my recycling of used Promix soil .

Nice bits of engineering there!
I like the removable side panel, wheels & the tilting lid. :+1: :+1:

I agree. That is a nice bin. With something that large, you should really be able to make some castings once it gets going.

Cool, you noticed the nifty sides of my bin

Are you planning on running it seasonally or all year round?

Right now I use this to mix my soil in , I have other tanks that are smaller around 100 gallon’s each . Thinking of turning this into a bin . Covering may be an issue where as using the smaller bins i can cover them easier .

Edited: that’s peat moss on top what’s underneath is black gold

Both, but trial n error first.
I can easily add some “PolyBlue XPS Foampanel” in bottom and sides, which insulates during winter

I got an order of 250 reds from Uncle Jim’s a week or so ago. The worms made it alive and well. I didn’t count or anything but had plenty of good sized worms in there. This will be my first time too.

Placing an order tonight reds or euros thats the question

For pure composting, I would go with reds. I went with the euro’s for fishing. I use them to catch sunfish, and then I use the sunfish as bait.

They would probably work just as well for other small fish or trout.

I believe the reds work a bit faster.

This time last year, it was a 2 month wait to get orders filled… :+1:
I was offered African night crawlers as a substitute… Sounded good until I researched… I waited for the Red Wigglers… :call_me_hand:

They’re feasting on the horse shit, seems to be their favorite food so far

I received my worms today. I didn’t realize how small they would be, like threads. It looked like half where dead and the other half weren’t moving much.

Picked up the info sheet and it said.
#1 worms may look small - normal
#2 worms may look dead or hardly moving -
normal.
Next morning I couldn’t see theme so they must have woke up and moved to the bottom :+1:

When should I feed them. Will the blueberries be a good meal?
