Missing Seedlings?

Ok. So yesterday I put out 4 autos that had just opened up. Today I check on them and 2 are straight up gone. Are there animals that’ll do that, I guess? Did I just learn a lesson, lol? Do you guys give any special protection to seedlings, or even keep them inside? Are the remaining two safe?

I would start plant indoors until they’re big enough. I’ve seen people put chicken wire around or over them.

I had an auto get murdered overnight by an unknown bandit:

I think it was probably a bird

Bird is a good guess, if it were big enough to have a good rooting it would leave it alone.

Which answers the question when to put them out I guess. Indoors we don’t have to worry about this shit! Just cats.

Anything I ever put outside I grew to 10-12" inside first. Then it’s got a chance. Seedlings are bird treats, especially early on…

Ps.mice, rats, chipmunks, groundhogs, birds all potential consumers, even deer will eat larger plants…

Rabbits can squeeze through very small openings. They do love fresh greens in their diet… I also have some moles that come around. Try putting chicken wire around the babies if you’re going to put them out that early. Before putting plants out, I usually try to veg for a month or two, that way the main stalk isn’t so green and tempting!

edit… Either that, or you can try using big pots and sit them out.

Had this happen to me indoors. Definitely a mouse. Chewed through the top new growth of a full on teenage plant. Most recently had something eat up 2 of 11 germinated seeds :sob:

Shoot! That sucks. Ya I start mine inside now since a gang of squirrels ravaged my baby auto’s last summer… Little bastards! I usually put them out around the start of week 3.

I’m up in a tall building so it’s gotta be a bird. No critters to speak of.
