Mr.Sparkle Growing with MarsHydro : 2022

So one of our generous forum sponsors @MarsHydro approached me and asked if i would do a grow with one of their lights and even offered up a tent in the process though due to space constraints and my grow style a TS1000 was settled upon as it was really the only light that would fit my grow spaces. Their newer bar style lights would of been nice but im confident this TS1000 will do the job nicely which has been on the market for a few years.

So here we are  i want to preface that I agreed caused it gave me a chance to personally run one of their lights that i normally wouldn’t acquire just as im a DIY as far as lights go or at least have been up to this point, and also would like to note that in various LED discussions on this forum that when a fellow member has been looking for a Prebuilt Commercial option instead of the going down the DIY route that i pretty frequently recommended MarsHydro as an affordable effective option for those members, now those recommendations were of no gain for myself other than i got to see other members move over into the LED world and cheer on their grows.

Saying that lets get the show on the road.

Here’s the Light, came well packaged with adjustment straps and hangers “not shown” and is an easy plug and play light, the driver and dimmer control can be remote mounted if one wanted thus the extra cable length between the driver and the light, side note in the back of my head i was kinda expecting the hammered mirror like finish to the reflector/panel that they use to run not expecting the white they have now which does make it look cleaner and more to the point.

Light Setup Wise for my space, i was considering remote mounting the driver and dimmer to the back wall to try and squeek out a couple more cm of height and have the driver in a more air friendly location though due to the power cable connection for the panel no extra height could really be gained unless i rewired it without the bulk head fitting which wasn’t something i wanted to do just to keep it simple and in an untouched form, So i just bundled up the driver wires in a way to allow some space and airflow to the driver and used the lights attachment points with some zip ties to attach it to some eyelet screws i had moved closer in on the inside roof of my cabinet with the driver flush against the roof, surprisingly the driver temp was only around 40C when running at around 100w from the wall.

Only things i did was relocate the MarsHydro sticker and make an adapter cord to connect to my timer that went in place of the standard PS cable that you attach on this light to plug it into the wall, simple enough and i just used a spare PS cable i had and no modifications to the lights main wiring was needed which was handy.

Now on to the Grow detail’s …
Were gonna be using my Left Cabinet for the grow and runs down like this.

  • 3 Sqft.
  • Soil level to light is around 18" or 45cm which is only about 2-3cm less than my diy lights.
  • Recycled coco as the grow medium which has sat dry for a cycle.
  • Nutrients will be PlantProd’s MJ Bloom and CalKick with a bit of Epsom and CalNit added at times.
  • Reservoirs are some ikea bins maid to suit where the pots sit partially through the lid of the bin.
  • Automatic watering using a cycle timer and some 12v pumps couple to some basic irrigation parts.
  • Pots are from the Dollarstore and hold about 8-900ml of “soil” volume with a little headspace and have drainage holes drilled in the bottom of them.
  • Updates with be my standard Mon-Wed-Sat when i can, and discussions and chatting daily of course with the occasional seed give away

As for what were running i started some seeds gifted by a grow bud most all you know on here that being @ReikoX , so i’ve kinda randomly picked out two types out of a bunch he sent me recently just going “sure i like the sound of that one” and using the first two seeds out of each that being.

  • Grape Walker Kush x Glo F1
  • Forgotten Cookies x Glo F1

Both being Fem Autos for refrence.

I’m gonna also start some of my own seed or some others as backups and for my other cabs but just haven’t got on that yet.

Saying that the four seeds have sprouted tails with 3 a bit quicker than the fourth but all planted as of tonight, so i expect to see seedling popping up come another day or two. Coco has been pre-charged with 1.4 ec feed water and is bottom wicking atm and will for probably the first two weeks as i maintain res levels to allow that before hooking up the autowaters.

You know I been a marshydro skeptic for a couple of years lol. So be good to see someone as particular as yourself hashing through those numbers we all (I) really wanna see. Good luck brother :sunglasses:

I have a TS model and the only complaint I have is it gets a little hotter than I’d like.

I’m sure it’ll work nicely for you and congrats on the score.

Congratulations on getting the light for a test run I am very interested in this size light I have a 24 x 24” tent that I believe it would fit perfectly going to be watching this run to see how it performs

Thank you for sharing your grow

one question is this like dimmable

The output ive been running so far puts the light at around 40c which is about 6-7c hotter than my diy light but they also have twice as many diodes and a bigger heatsink panel so kinda expected that it would be warmer but 40c is fine for me, i should do some max wattage tests just to see though even if my space is less than ideal for that.

Also will say my circulation fans probably help with keeping it reasonable as i know any light if in say a stagnant air area gets heat soaked pretty quick.

Yup, has a rocker switch that either goes to 100% and apparently allows it to daisy chain off one dimmer for control on that setting with the other switch position allowing the dimmer knob to come into play which documentation goes 10-100% which is no different than say the AB meanwell drivers we use in the DIY Led light side, that and the dimmer has an indent lock out to “turn off” the light though i still measured a couple watts being pulled when testing as its not a true off when using dimming control for that which is expected.

And for a 2x2 where your not running very limited height like me id say it would fit the bill.

For me im gonna running into some side coverage issues later in the grow as the reflectors cutoffs makes it a bit dark once say a plant gets to within 8-9cm of height from the panel but is also at the edge of the cabinet, though im just gonna try and be diligent on plant training to keep that gap, otherwise the side panels “can” be removed for a tiny bit more cover they just aren’t suppose to be.

Really if i could of fit say a TSW2000 i would have to get better coverage for my limited height but then like 2/3rds of the potential output of that light would go to waste and i was only a couple cm short of being able to fit one also it wouldn’t be a more typical reflection of how one may use there lights.

I think it will do nicely and say if i was running a small tent or my cabinets were taller you could just hang the light a bit higher and compensate with the extra power it has.

Yea I wouldn’t say “too hot” it just made me narrow my eyes a little.

That said mine has been in constant service for almost 3 years and I’m very happy with it.

I get you and of course ive already taken some measurement cause well its me, say light output with different spectrum’s in mind between this TS1000 and say my F90 bridgelux strips just due to diode color temps and me using a lux meter and not a par meter, my readings at same sensor distances and wattage draw were within about 1% of my Diy lights on initial fire up which well yeah is what it is and why i think it will do the job nicely.

Looks good so far wished one of these lighting company’s would offer me a led light to test out against my hps lights .

Maybe i should re consider their products. Let me at those data sheets. I know you didn’t pay but what is price per watt?

Very cool @Mr.Sparkle , I have one of those lights but not the new model in white. I am sure it will do well for you. I have been using their products for a number of grows now and am happy with their performance. Looking forward to watching your grow.

Without say discounts that pop up every now and then looks to be $190cnd plus tax for me which considering ac supply voltage changes things slightly i was maxing out at 146watts the other day which is within spec.

So $1.3CND a watt for this TS1000 and seems about the same for their FC line up and in the $1=Watt range for their FC-E lineups which run bridgelux chips coincidentally.

DIY Bridgelux wise and using say the F90’s running 8x560mm strips at 150w which is a reasonable 60% over driven amount off a xlg-150 “AB” variety and potentiometer once you add in shipping sans any tax im in the $140ish CND range already and thats not including a heat sink “old sign” rivets, wiring, and time.

So really not that far off or on par to just plug and play and not having to build it and kinda why ive been suggesting options such as this for people who aren’t DIY’ers, assuming longevity holds up like others say and its good for say 3+ years that extra 25-30% cost for some of the lights where the FC-Es are on par price wise vs the DIY route for small grows is really nothing when its an extra bill or two at the end.

I can’t comment on the FC-E’s output or any of that but yeah… kinda at that point unless needing to go the DIY route commercial options are at that price point where apart from customization its around the same cost.

Those are the kind of numbers I like to see. I hate to say it but I’m tempted to run one of their lights to see how they compare. I’ve ran bridgelux EB gen 2s and I’m always happy to advocate them. Maybe mars are listening a lot more than I thought  to our community. And almost comparable price wise to DIY. You’re doing a good job of proving me wrong. @MarsHydro if the buds stack up as much as the numbers. You’ve got yourself a new fan :100:

So here we go.

Day 0
Grape Walker Kush x Glo F1’s on the left and Forgotten Cookies x Glo F1’s on the right.

The front FC x Glo has some tap root damage when i checked it just now as it wasn’t looking as well as the others, root tip curled and dead headed and is now trying to split :man_shrugging: maybe i caused it as it needed a little help yesterday to try and shed its seed sac.

Either way i dropped a sprouted DarkSpark “green pheno” x Purple lemonade beside it in the same pot so whatever is the stronger of the two will remain, or ill swap in another pot of something else if either don’t take.

Running in the 60-70w range at the moment With this TS1000 and will turn it up to around 100w once the plants get going a bit more, just no sense to add that extra light energy right now which will just become heat.
