New Grower, killed seeds, first try, help please lmao

On the driver itself there should be two little black covers that are removeable. One labeled VO and one labeled IO, remove the black cover from the IO port and then you need a small phillips screw driver and very carefully you can turn it left(counter-clockwise) and right(clockwise), turning left(counter-clockwise) it will dim down to 50% or can turn it right(clockwise) and raise to ~110%. DO NOT TOUCH THE VO. Only adjust the IO pot. It only turns so much each way so don’t force it when you feel resistance. Sometimes takes a bit to seat the screwdriver correctly for it to turn.

thank you!!! So should I dim it all the way ?

Sorry @HolyAngel for stepping in your toes, was searching info and didn’t read your posts. I also have the rspec, works great, you should dim it for your next grow … :sunglasses:

You can if you want, it just depends. Might be fine with it raised up a bit more too.

If you can’t measure the light intensity you have to go off the plants. No harm in starting low, just monitor the seedlings.

If they start getting tall stretchy immediately then you need to either lower the light or raise the dimmer until they stop stretching like that.

If they look fine you’re good.

If they’re bending over and/or leaves twisting, looking like they’re trying to hide from the light, it’s too intense and needs to be raised up or the dimmer turned down.

I guess what I am saying is, yes you should either raise the light or dim it all the way down and start there.

I think you just had a trifecta of wrong ph, no nutes, and too strong light for seedlings. Fix those and I think you’ll be good to grow.

I suggest daylight plain ole CFL’s for seedlings…They can be within a few inches of the tops with no damage…After they grow a few nodes…then move them to the HLG’s…just my 3 cents…

IMO…HLG does make very good lights ( own some myself)…But the word “best” is pretty hard to justify these days…Lots of great lights out there.

Happy growing!

24” is a good place to start sprouts. Adjust as needed.

Are you married to the coco or would you consider switching? I use promix and I find it very simple. From what I’ve read coco is not very forgiving.

I tell you this in the hope that you can keep your first few grows simple and learn and yield.

Make it simple and painless, it’s a steep learning curve. Get fancy a few grows down the road.

All the best

Next time just stick them under 24 hours of CFL until they are hearty enough for the LED tents. One of my ‘seedling rooms’ is actually just a bathroom, I just leave the lights on at night, my other seedling/early veg room is under a good old Sun Blaze 4 lamp T5 in a tiny tent, also I think the best beginner soil that is just right from seedling to harvest is Roots Organic (I know lots of people hate it), it doesn’t run to hot and has good drainage in most bags, minimal pests…plus you can learn how to reuse/amend the soil after your first run, coco can get tricky when your starting out…good luck

I always start seeds off in black gold soil,I use fox farms ocean forest soil for larger plants ,it will burn the shit out of younger plants, reason I use the black gold first ,I use some cheap ass led bulbs I bought from eBay that’s a 20 ton shop press lol I have in my bedroom,I’ve grown weed at home with out a tent,it’s called weed for a reason it will grow anywhere,my wife bought me my first growtent because she was sick of looking at plants all over the bedroom, you don’t have to spend a fortune to grow weed,I have some led grow lights I payed $50 each from eBay ,and I grow some dank ass weed

FWIW, I second the notion of the posters above to start in a very basic soil, like the Black Gold. I had a friend years back that I got into growing, and he was hell bent on coco for some reason. He had problem after problem until he switched to soil medium. I’m not saying you can’t grow in coco, but it may not be the best medium for folks just starting out, as it’s very unforgiving, due to being inert, and it dries out very easily.

Another thing you may try with some is the starter pods. Let them soak in water. Once they have expanded, you put the seed in. I have used them several times with success. Just do not put them deep in there, I made that mistake once. Just about a 1/2 inch or so. They have some nutriets in there to help them get going. Then they creat a buffer for the seedlings when you plant them into soil. Helps if the soil was too hot (nutrient rich) for the seedlings.

Does anyone have any experience with pro mix soil, supposed to have all the nutrients it needs for six weeks or so.

Just so you know, VPD charts are just a general guide. The actual VPD will change due to things like how much IR radiation your lights put out. 80F under an LED isn’t the same as 80F under an HPS.

@Worcestershire_Farms very interesting so what does more iR do to Vpd raise the number or lower?

This is really interesting that you say that. Do you think its just due to the intensity of the light?

Yeap, a nutrient burn from my anxiety to feed the plant when wasn’t yet needed, had to flush intensively to recover so lost that six weeks range, never used it again …

@Who @PGT710
VPD is measuring transpiration. The changes in the temperature of the leaf from the infrared light will increase or decrease transpiration, so the guide can’t be exact for every grow room.
