It’s nice to wake up & see this update . It shows life has not made you give up ! Slow will finish the race with great rewards in the end , Good job friend !
@Crazy1 Thanks for the kind words! Life is gonna have to do more to keep me down! I may get behind but I never give up!
Well, just wanted to give a part 2 to yesterday’s mess. I found my way back to the home improvement store…
I was able to pick up the Poly insulation boards I was unable to get yesterday. I will continue through the week adding boards and sealing them up. I think I should be able to complete a large section of the space with what I have.
Happy weekend, and good vibes for the coming week!
Um @OGSince03 sir, bob villa called and asked if you would slow down. Your making him look like a real chump here. Nice job. I love diyers and your killing it!
@Boozer This time on “This Old House”…
Truth be told I could learn a few things from that guy! The project is coming along, I hope to give a update this weekend as I should be able to get more done. I looked at the filter box’s from AC Infinity and it looks like anything smaller than the 8in is available. I will have to wait to purchase anything bigger. Each tents intake line will be attached to AC Infinity 4in filter boxes. Stay tuned!
Lol
@OGSince03 what’s your extreme temps you will be dealing with? Just curious as I battle heat loss alot
How I feel at the end of each day!
Well, I wish I knew to be honest ! The attic space has the air handler unit with a extra line I can use to regulate temps once it’s sealed up. The air coming from this line will be closest to habitable temps compared to outside temps. That being said it will not be enough. I will mount a 10in in-line from the gable vent on a tempt/humidity controller to help bring in hot or cool air as needed.
During the winter months it will snow for a day and melt by the next in most cases. Summer can be a little less forgiving, maybe 100-120 without any insulation.
Once I can get it all sealed up, I’ll be able to determine just how much air exchange and conditioning it will need. I will post all info as I get it to keep you all up to date. I have multiple options for cooling before I have to add a split unit or a portable one.
I may end up adding a plenum to attach all tent exhausts. I will have to contain smells as best as I can, so I’m thinking of adding a big boy carbon scrubber to the exhaust line. I think each tent having one, and a final one before exiting should help.
This is all up in the air but just my current thoughts on the air handling.
I have been all over the USA , Canada & Mexico…beleive me when I say there’s No Place Like Home …tired or not ~
I’m off for Turkey week out of state so I wanted to give a little update for everyone. I have managed to squeeze in some time at the lab. I was able to get all 10 sheets of 2in Poly insulation up and in place. I filled all gaps with expanding foam, and will tape along all exposed trusses before adding back the IR barrier. If the heights allowed me to place the board in front of the trusses instead of in between, I would have went that route. Maybe next attic build eh!?
Anyhoo this is more or less what I’m going for.
I only have pictures of before I secured them, and filled gaps. I will update with more sometime next week and show the finished result.

To the right.
Once I did finish the gap sealing/securing of boards, I happened to notice this piece of art on the ground. 🤷
Happy day OG’s! See ya next time!
I’ve used hundreds of cans of spray foam making / sealing waterfalls. First, that stuff takes days to wash off for some reason (its like a black / grey version of greatstuff). Second, the “pro” cans are AWFULLY thin. I have seen 2 get punctured after being dropped, one sprayed ALL over the greenhouse, black foam everywhere! The other, a poor new guy didnt know what to do so he shoves it in a toolbox to contain the foam. Uh, much easier to pick up off the grass than it is to go searching for tools that were foamed into the toolbox. Poor kid had his hands and forearms covered in black foam for like 3 days…
WoW! That sounds like a disaster! Poor kid only made his life worse… I was extremely careful to not get it anywhere it didn’t need to be. The stuff likes to keep coming out the nozel after you let go of the trigger. I assume its the foam expanding from the air. Acetone or some kind of solvent is the only way to get it off. I sealed up another attic space like this years ago and learned the hard way. I was peeling skin off trying to get it off of me. It’ll ruin clothes too.
I have long hair and used that foam to filling some gaps in the small areas of the 2nd floor of a cape cod house. Needless to say while crawling in there i accidentally got some in my hair. It was crazy and didnt come out.
@Kami Happy Turkey day bud! I luckily have shorter hair and had some get in mine, I can’t imagine you’re frustration!! I sprayed what I could with parts cleaner to dissolve it. I wouldn’t recommend using it on body parts… High proof solvent will break it down, moonshine or isopropyl if available.
That is an abstract Japanese sculpture, isn’t it? A coat of paint to protect from UV and instant yard art. Looks like a Sumo guy holding up a handful of anti-gravity pebbles.
If anyone needs clouds deciphered, I am available.
@bunny Abstract for sure! Depending on which angle you look from it could be something different every time! Nothing short of a statement piece! Happy Day!
Its funny, but I TOTALLY see that now!
Seeee… I am not crazy.
Back in the lab again folks!
I hope everyone’s Holiday traditions went off without a hitch! I took a couple weeks off to try and smell the roses if you will. My battery pack is fully charged and ready for Christmas time!
Let’s begin with a little update for those that are still interested!
I left off with all insulation boards up and in place, gaps filled and ready for the next step.
Here is a picture of the dried gap sealer that needs to be cleaned up along all edges. This at first seemed like a long job but it went rather quickly.
The larger pieces were easily broke off without any damage to the seals. It took about 20 minutes to clean everything up.
After all the gap sealer was cleaned and leveled to the trusses, It was time to add some heavy duty insulation tape. This will add extra holding strength to the boards and seal any gaps that may have been missed by the spray foam gap sealer.
I cleaned all truss surfaces before applying to make sure there was a strong bond. Running my hand over the tape several times to ensure the tape adhered to all surfaces. I made sure to double check all edges of tape for a missed seal.
Here is a look at the finished results.

The rest of this week I will begin to move things around a bit and start screwing down these floors I have added. I still have to purchase a couple more sheets to complete it. I will also grab more 2in insulation boards to try and finish the roof. I will also be insulating the back side of the room where the IR barrier is. The goal is to be completely sealed. I know it’s gonna take some more work but we’re on the right path! Stay safe everyone!
Still here, and still interested, lol. You have that spot looking great, gonna be sealed tight!
Nice to take the time to smell the roses and glad your back at 100% ready for Christmas!!
