OGs Secret Lab

@Oldtimerunderground Thank you, everyone here inspires me to keep going so thanks for being involved! This work is for the people of OG indeed. If my math is right I need about 15 more sheets to get this sealed right. I don’t want to get hasty and go cheap with 1in boards. I think they are half the price at around $15 a sheet. $30 a sheet of the 2in… I haven’t even began ventilation yet…

@Heliosphear Welcome buddy! I hope to have this train ready to roll soon. Holidays have set me back a bit but that is to be expected with a one man band! :drum: Happy Holidays and best of luck on you’re projects!

Minor Update:

I made a trip to purchase some insulation boards and happened to run into some people that need not know about my hobbies… I had to leave what I had there and walk off like it was not mine! :joy: I will go back tomorrow to grab what I left, if it’s still in stock… I did manage to grab more plywood last week to finish up the floors. Heading to the lab in a bit to finish the job, I’m ready to check this task off!

Current Situation
This spot joins the two areas and took some precision grade cutting skills to make fit, let me tell you! Gold :star: for me, first cut was perfect. I’ll take that W!

Looking towards the soffit…

This is the area I will be completing tonight if all goes to plan. I’ll need my hand warmers tonight!

Be back soon!

(Edit)

As always I had to stop a bit earlier than planned. Battery packs were not charged and I did not bring a charger for them. I was able to get two boards cut (barely) and put into place.

One more cut to size should do it for this side, leaving only the final piece on the other end. I will update this weekend with it finished. I will re attempt my previous purchase tomorrow and start working on the roof once more. :green_heart:

(Edit:Edit)

Finished up the last cut, time to get everything lined up nice and screw these baby’s down. More to come over the weekend. :christmas_tree:

@Oldtimerunderground I’ll take luck any day bud! Getting up and down a ladder to fix fuck ups has made me really measure twice. The first week I took this project on, it got my ass back into gear! You really don’t realize how much you use you’re muscles until you can’t!

Crawling in attic space is no joke.

I started a roofing company at 25.
In doing so I started from the bottom, taking every job, that came in on the phone. Leak detection in the fall and winters. First to Climbing through attics looking for leaks.

34 now and i avoids them at all cost. I don’t bother doin repairs anymore as my phone doesn’t stop ringing and it’s a bit difficult to monopolize on repairs when I can take on full contracts.

But needless to say , If i wasnt My size and Agile like a cat I would be in a different line of work lol!

I can only imagine doing carpentry in an attic space.
I am in and out if I go In, I know exactly what and where to look and when’ I see it I’m OUT!

Major props too you,

I lived in BC when I was early 20s and my friend had a insulation company, he got a job cleanings out old insulation and blowing in new stuff. He Somme how roped me into helping with my house guest , his girlfriend and her little brother.

We couldn’t stand up In there’s, It was middle of summer (temp same as outside our higher), and no proper gear, stuffing bags of rat shit and insulation into bags,

I don’t think he even payed us…last time I Came out to help on his jobs. Every time it was a shit show, he wouldn’t start til afternoon and would just leave us there to batt the walls and he would fuck off somewhere.
And we weren’t from BC. VERY REMOTE areas , no money no food no transit pass LOL stuck working in residential or new for this Fakkin Guy,

Attics though Props that one looks like a dream (now)

Great work

@Calix I did insulation in Florida years back and it is another level of hot… Arizona heat with Florida moisture, you basically drain all fluids from you’re body as soon as it enters. Hats off to you too for doing it as a profession, I got out as quick as I could! That boss you had sounds like a real piece of work to do that to his employees. He knew you were basically stuck from the sounds of it. Thanks for the kind words too btw, I’m slowly getting there. Floors are almost finished out so things should move along a bit quicker. The space this time of year stays at a manageable temp, as the sun sits lower in the sky. Once the room is sealed from the rest of the attic it will be even better. Lots to do still. Bare with me it’ll be worth it I promise!

Enjoying watching and reading about you’re progress!

piece of work is a nice way to put it…! It’s funny how the bad/negative stuff sticks in you’re memory lol I won’t give them or him anymore recognition . They were some good years that I wish to remember the good stuff mostly.
One funny thing - to add to that story lol it was so bad cleaning that attic me and my house guest must of had money because we left the job site and walked to a home hardware store to buy a shop vac because we were sick of doing it by hand and thought it would work for the rat shit lol we were in a nice posh part of Vancouver. North Vancouver - walking up the road in the middle of summer with our shirts off and carrying a shop vac box we just bought - and the cops drove by and stopped us and we had to show a receipt for the shop vac LOL And here we are using our own money to do work for someone else abusing labourers lol irony :

Looks like you know you’re stuff ! Interesting to learning about leaving the space between insulation boards and sheathing !

Take care up there!

@Calix The irony in that is all too real. It’s funny how some things happen that no one would ever even think could happen! Life is so unpredictable that stories are made and only a few will ever be there to witness it too. Stories like that should be taught to kids so they understand shit happens with out reason. You can’t script shit like that. Sounds like it was a good experience now that you made it out!

I thank you again for the kind words. I’m super excited to have you along for the ride! I had a couple goodies come in last week and will give a update tonight if I can finish up.

Good day all! Happy Holiday spirits to all you wonderful folks watching. The time has come yet again for another update!

To begin with, I made a few more purchases towards my soil. I thought I better start getting everything now, so I can have things ready to go once I get finished.

“If you start bad, you finish bad” was often heard through the years, so I intend to start as good as I can. I opted for ProMix BX instead of Premier peat moss only because of local availability. Either one will do just fine.
(Side note - I want to run a side by side with each to see if there is any noticeable differences)

I will be using a mixture of compost and worm castings. My choice of compost is Oly Mountain. Build A Soil had it cheapest after shipping so I went that route. I’m pretty sure I mentioned that before… I will purchase more in the coming weeks to have ready to go.

Most purchases will be through Build A Soil and KIS Organics. I may end up purchasing one or two particular items through Black Swallow as well! Correct me if I’m wrong but Black Swallow is Canada’s KIS Organics no!? Anyhoo, here is a few items I received last week…

I will continue to update as the full line up comes in. I will likely send off samples for testing before planted in. I don’t want any unforeseen issues that could be avoided.
All steps will be documented for you all to see!

(Warning Construction Zone)

Since the last update I was able to finish the floors and get them all screwed down nicely.
Upon arrival at the local home improvement store, I noticed only two more insulation boards available…. Had I been able to grab the 3 I left behind earlier in the week, I would have been able to complete this section completely.

First two rows…

All 4 boards up and in place…

I will once again return to my unfavorable home improvement branch later in the week. Much more to do folks, just pecking away… :green_heart:

@G-paS Hey there! I’m glad you tuned back in for a update! Thanks too btw, it is starting to look rather nice. Finished product should be even better! :crossed_fingers:

@Pluckyevil Hey fellow OGer! This will be my first go round with anything of theirs so I hope for the best. I’m use to running my own compost and WC but have not set any bins up for quite some time. Maybe I’ll pull my worm bin back out and give it a go!

I just want to say thank you ALL for being apart of this, you guys/gals are the real MVPs! :green_heart:

@Qtip You sir, have my word. I will do my best with what I can! I will likely get all the amendments soon and mix a couple batches up to send off for testing. I will post and record results for future adjustments. It looks like I’m gonna need to make or buy a proper brewer for teas. Loads of fun coming up!
