OGs Secret Lab

ooops, the following post was written last night, I think, ha. I forgot to hit the send button. Your plants should be real happy with the soil.

The dedication is astounding, lol. I’ve been in building much of my adult life. The attic is a tight place to work. I takes patience. Are you in CO? BAS had a nice holidays sale on recently. Some stuff 30% and some 20%off. I picked up a few things. I’m in southern CO and shipping is free.

As long as you have a good ventilation plan you should golden. Just gotta move that moist air out to prevent condensation now that you have it air tight sort of. Nice work! Looks like it’s getting close to GO time. Getting the soil mix together. Best vibes sent your way!

Thanks @GMan !!! I hope they do, I would love to just be able to water only. I am currently waiting for some items purchased from BAS. I’m sure it might take a while with the holiday sales and what not. Fingers crossed it shows up soon. I would like to start sending off samples for testing!

I will agree with the patience. I don’t think I have any but others say differently. The old man always said to take pride in you’re work… Nobody wants to work on other people’s ugly work.:joy: So I will usually do my best IF I can. I feel like I’m letting him down if I don’t.

Ventilation will be my next major hurtle but I feel solid about my idea. My main concern would be smell, but I have plans for that. I will likely make a plenum for exhausting the tents.
I will come up with a clean sketch for everyone to help me pick apart the flaws!

Well folks… I’ve been to the store about 6 times since Christmas and have had no luck with the insulation boards. I may have no choice but to go out of town and try another store… I will call around tomorrow and see if I can locate any. :crossed_fingers:

Here is a breakdown of items recently ordered. Some are still on the way. Once I have everything I will begin the soil building process. :green_heart:

1 CF of 3/8in - 1/2in Pumice (Totaling 1.5CF)

Kelp Meal

Insect Frass (will compare KIS brand also)

Rootwise Microbes

Here is a list of things still being shipped out.

I also went ahead and started ordering what I knew I would need for ventilation, I figured I better stay ahead of it all.

8in AC infinity fan

I also got a couple 4in dampers, another controller, 1 6in to 8in reducer, as well a 6x6x6 3 way splitter that’s still being shipped!

Hope to have more sooner than later, till next time! :green_heart:

I’ve read almost every post in this thread, im all caught up, very interesting space. I can’t wait to see it in action. I have a similar attic but always thought it would be too difficult to control the temperature.

@antheis Thanks! Thanks for stopping in as well bud! I think having to make store runs causes most of the set backs. I don’t live in a overly populated area so choices are very slim as far as home improvement stores go… I’m kind of at their mercy so to speak. I should have known this time of year would present issues with insulation…:-1:🤷 Best of luck with you’re new project as well bro! :green_heart:

@Crazy1 Always a pleasure to have you here! I’m glad you’re sticking around to see this come together! This has taken much longer than expected but it’s coming along none the less. :green_heart: Thanks for checking up on me!

@Greenfingers Hey there! Thanks for showing interest, I am happy to have you here at the lab! I aim to please here and would love any input or experience you may have! Attics are hard to keep in check, It can be done with enough stubbornness and dedication. Geographic location is the big factor, I am fortunate enough to have that going for me. Which direction the house faces in relation to you’re space, tree coverage, neighbors… Just a few things to keep in mind. :seedling::green_heart:

@OGSince03 happy to join the show, I gave up on the attic for heat issues. It would be too difficult to cool down in the summer.

@Greenfingers I lived in Florida years back and I finally threw in the towel myself with that project. I didn’t want to dump a lot of money into something that had to be tore down anyway. Running a split unit for cooling was out of the question. If I have to, I will with this. This space will function as climate controlled storage once I’m done with it, so I won’t mind installing one if I have to.

Live from the community lab with another update!:man_health_worker:

Welcome back all! I hope all is well! :green_heart:
I have spent some time locating more supplies, now I am finally able to continue this saga.

I was able to finish up this row finally, here are the first three I cut and put into place.

Here are the end pieces cut and fit into place.

I did manage to get some orders in, I think one more should do before I can pull the trigger on making my batches for testing. I’m getting excited like a kid on Christmas to start. :green_heart::seedling:

I do want to try and test some runs with the two types of insect frass. One from KIS, made from Mealworms. The other is from BAS and is made from soldier flies. I hope I don’t breed a google of flies…🤷

Happy growing all!

@CornbreadJunior Thanks bud! My phone screen went out last week, I was unable to take pics of the letter and say thanks!! :seedling: can’t wait to try ‘‘em out! Hope you’re doing well bro, I’m pecking away at it when I can. One more row will finish the roof. Then the backside will need to be done…

@Crazy1 Yes sir you are indeed correct! I think I should be finishing the roof soon. The walls will be shortly after. Thanks for stopping in bud!

From the perspective of living in a place that goes from -40c to 40c each and every 6 months, this whole attic concept is unthinkable.lol Is anyone else going buggered trying to figure out were this is being pulled off? lol

Welcome back to another episode guys! I thought I should give a update of what I’ve been up to. I have gathered all my materials for my soil building and thought I would document my process.

My thoughts
I know I could simply swing things as I have in the past, but I want to have more info into what I’m putting into my soil. I will be sending in samples for testing simply put.

Logan labs offers soil testing so I figured I would give them a go. Instead of making up a crazy number of batches for testing, I will attempt a total of 8 if need be.

I need 2 cups of soil per sample. Logan labs recommends taking 15 samples from different places for one well rounded result. I won’t be able to do that, but results will be close enough.

Most recipes are in cubic foot, so I scaled down.
I made 1 gallon of base soil with correct ratios I want to use.

(One Gallon) 16 cups = 8 possible tests

BASE
60% ProMix BX = (9.6 cups)
30% Pumice = (4.8 cups)
10% Oly Mountain Compost = (1.6 cups)
1 tablespoon Dolomite Lime
1 tablespoon Gypsum
2 tablespoons Brix Blend Basalt
2 tablespoons Oyster Shell Flour
1 gram TM-7

———Testing———

AMENDMENTS

  • Alfalfa Meal
  • Crustacean Meal
  • Fish Bone Meal
  • Fish Meal
  • Insect Frass (Build a Soil)
  • Insect Frass (KIS Organics)
  • Kelp
  • Neem/Karanja 50/50
  • Activated BioChar

Test 1: Original Base Recipe (Starting point)
Test 2: Recommended ratio of amendments
Test 3: Build a Soil Insect Frass added
Test 4: KIS Organics Insect Frass added
Test 5: Azomite added
Test 6: BioChar added

This is obviously incomplete and I will be working on this more in the coming week but I wanted to pick some brains here. Maybe I have some redundancy’s in my thinking and a outside perspective would help me. Much love to you all, best wishes for the coming week! :green_heart::seedling::man_health_worker:
