Preserving terps in cure

I swear by 60 degrees and 60% for 14 days whole plants hung ,trim and into plastic storage tubs with the vents taped shut stir and burp daily for 4 days ziplock then vacuum seal and store freezer or cool dark space .
I use vacuum jars and 62%humidity packs to keep my daily smokers in so from the freezer to the jar .

I got thinking, Since the original topic was about terpenes. I only learned about terpenes about two years ago. From discovering the whole world of innovations that bloomed in the past 13-15 years. I though I was ahead of the game back then with making BHO, just open blasting into a packed stainless tube, or making QWISO. But from what Iā€™ve gathered about how they process sauces and such, it sounds like a lot of it is lost in the drying itself, which is what made the ā€œliveā€ sauce and rosins popular. When they process the stuff for ā€œliveā€ terp sauce and rosin, they freeze the fresh wet material. Live rosin is made from bubble hash that is then freeze dried to remove moisture but still preserve the maximum terpenes, before using a controlled low heat to press the rosin. So to have max terpenes in buds to smoke, That would prob require freeze drying the bud. Freeze drying preserves as much as the essence as possible, but would prob also have a very planty, vegetive taste from all the chlorophyll. I even smell/taste it in live sauces, like Iā€™m smelling a fresh plant.

True that! I have made live fresh frozen rosin and because the strain I was using was very skunky I found the flavor between the green and the skunk to be to much. I prefer the taste of the rosin from dried and cured weed so far. I will try fresh frozen again on my new strains as I am sure it would taste great with some strains.

Argon has been proven to strip terps, I posted a video above showing some published findings on such. Best thing for terps is vacuum. It is post #16

Ya I just fill them like a jar, dump buds in until itā€™s like 3/4 full.

Hey if any1 one here lives in ma and and will come show me how to do it on me lolā€¦
So I just started grow in January, I read online that alot of dispensaries dont cure there weed so when I open the jar should i
Get hit with that classic smell or does it go away ?because when I break the bud up it smells great its just when I open the jar I dont get hit with it just smells like nothing, and if my trichromes are 30 percent amber but theres still some white hairs is that ok? And what should the humidity be when I first put the buds in the jar say after the first 24 hours I close it? Sorry for all the questions im just trying to figure out what Iā€™m doing wrong,I also have a vacuum sealer with bags, but when you say Iā€™m drying too fast do you mean Iā€™m putting them in the jar too quick or drying to many days or with to much heat

What should my meter read the first day I put in jar? Is 70% humidity too high that first day?

Give the jar a few hours with the lid off even starting around 50 % then regulate from that point

Lucky! ā€¦ :joy: Thatā€™s mid-winter here! Iā€™d have to go about 15ā€™ below ground to pull that offā€¦ :+1:

IME, bovedaā€™s dry out too fast & their paper steals moisture, boostā€™s are a bit better. IME both suck. Maybe itā€™s me.

I think you have a point there.
I have a preference for Boost over Boveda too, they seemed to have a better envelope material - is that a polyethylene material (like Tyvek)? Definitely better moisture transference characteristics.

I have switched to boost as well and like them better.

60F/60RH works for me, did that last run and took 2 weeks, no issues. Came out about perfect.

Iā€™ve tried bovedaā€™s repeatedly, 58ā€™s and 62ā€™s over the last few years and Iā€™ve come to the conclusion thatā€¦ they suck. They donā€™t regulate much either way if the herb is really under dry or really over dry, and every time Iā€™ve ever used them for a long period of time during curing, even with already cured dispensary herb, I get a mold smell after a couple weeks. Iā€™ve had less of an issue with the 58ā€™s than the 62ā€™s but overall, Iā€™m finding I like things better without them. The other jars I didnā€™t use them in are perfect and still smell dank. Only the boveda jars get a mold type smell. Iā€™ve also seen a loss of terps/smell when using the bovedaā€™s compared to jars without them but its not every time in every jar, not sure what the delineation is there. Iā€™ve just got them shoved in a drawer until the day I take them out to the trash or can find some other use for them.

May have to check out the Boost oneā€™s though

I feel this deep in my soul! Weed from back in the day was better than 75% of whatā€™s in dispos around me. I miss that stanky danky. Oklahoma dispos are overrun with ā€˜cookies thisā€™ and ā€˜gelato thatā€™ā€¦ not much variety and they quality is pretty poor. I was in a more rural area last week and went to a little dispo and they literally had 1 decent looking jar. I could see water leaves in the other jars. If I worked there, Iā€™d be ashamed to sell that to peopleā€¦ maybe I just have high standards lol.

And i feel ya on having a strain thatā€™s supposed to purple up and doesntā€¦ i just grew a Ghost OG/Nevilleā€™s Haze hybrid crossed with a Grape Ape. The photos from the breeder showed purple flowers. I dont have a shred of purple in my harvest. Maybe itā€™s just the phenos we got dont express the purpling gene. But if Iā€™m not mistaken, you can make any strain purple with lower temps, so it could 100% be a climate issue. My grow was also at warmer temps. 73ā°F low and 83ā°F high.

Right? Pretty lame dispensaries. Some decent highs, but no good flavor. It all tastes chemically to me.

IME all strains ā€˜go purpleā€™ with <50F nighttime(possibly just a minimum # of hours at <50F).

Yea, use to up the A/C at night to induce purple coloration, but doesnā€™t Seem to do anything for taste or potency. Good to show off fresh/pictures, and sure you can tell people it was purple, but they dry out looking black.

Boveda packs work best if you put them in your jars after have reached your target humidity and are done ā€œburping.ā€ Iā€™ve never gotten any mold smell using them that way. I have not noticed any loss of terps using them, but Iā€™m going to pay closer attention to that going forward. I think they help extend the life of your buds if you live somewhere dry. Here in NY, they are a big help in the winter. I donā€™t think they are essential by any means, but they can be useful under the right circumstance.

Iā€™ve noticed that from the dispensary weed i get in ohio. I got this stuff now called hells bells and it looks absolute fire, but open the bag and almost zero smell, but once you grind it, the smell comes out. Most of this crap is so shitty and over priced. They quick dry with c02 and throw the shit in a commercial trimmer which strips a huge amount of terpenes off the flower.

Which they in turn use the fallen trichs for pre rolls. The pre rolls are larfy bud and shake then coated with kief for that cough to make you think youā€™re smoking the bomb

I pride myself on experimenting and being open to new ideas, so I decided to give dry trimming a try. Iā€™m a convert. It is quicker and easier. I end up with a bit more leaf on my trimmed buds, but Iā€™m finding I actually like that since they are covered in trichs. The end results are very similar to what I was getting with wet trimming, but maybe the terps are a little better with dry trimming.
