Hi, I started a new grow a few weeks ago with 2 strains. I made a separate diary with the other one, but this one is Unicorn Whip by Dirty Bird Genetics. I think it was only available as a freebie for a short time. I don’t know what the cross is, but probably Unicorn Poop with something. Thanks to @9mag for gifting these to me…out of the hundreds of seeds in my collection these quickly floated to the top of my priority list.
I messed up. I decided to try coco plugs for the first time in a long time instead of my custom light mix organic soil. Things didn’t go so well.
…and they stayed like this doing nothing for a while, even after making sure my VPD and DLI were optimal. They started to die. I wasn’t over or under-watering them. They had no roots visibly poking through the coco plug yet, so I transplanted it to a 1L pot, and added some heat to incubate the roots a bit. I skipped taking pictures for week 2. Here’s week 3.
These were neglected and root bound, as well as VPD way out of whack at around 35-40% RH. I’ve been lazy and haven’t paid much attention to my plants at all the past month. I’m normally not this bad, but I’m sure they’ll bounce back.
15 days later, before and after transplant from 1L to 2gal (final home):
This grow of mine was sort of a ‘I don’t care what happens’ grow. I have enough flower for at least a year, and so I just wanted to mess around with a new organic soil recipe, and the environment setup to see how plants do.
They were doing bad with the environment changes early on, but once transplanted into larger pots with the new soil recipe, they turned around fast. It didn’t give me a lot of time for training though, as I don’t really like spending more than 8 weeks in vegetative state. So, they didn’t get trained at all, and lateral branching is next to nothing, so yield will likely be small - even for the small 2gal pot size they are in.
So I’m thinking, because this was all a test and not for any product… and because I really like the strong smell and resilience of these plants so far, I’m going to dust them with some special pollen I’ve been saving, and give some seeds away to OGers.
So who here is interested in some Unicorn Whip babies? Leave a comment to secure your spot now if so, because the yield will probably be small. I’ll mention the male in a couple weeks when I dust them. No buds yet 9 days after the flip:
Today is the last day before it gets dusted with pollen. The donor is Charcuterie from Cannarado Genetics, which is Grape Pie BX x Cheesy D (UK Cheese x Chemdawg).
I think it’s safe to say the pollen that we dusted a couple weeks ago wasn’t viable. Also, one of these two plants has a concerning phosphorus uptake issue. I’m not going to baby these plants. There isn’t much else I can do that I haven’t already done, given their small pot size. I’m sure they’ll make it to the end in a decent form regardless. They’re about 4 weeks in bloom, so about half way there.
The tall lanky one has a few leaves dying every day, but, today, at the end of week 5 of flower, I found out the pollen I rubbed on both of these 3 weeks ago was actually viable. I didn’t think it was since I didn’t get any receding stigmas or color change, but, I disected a suspect calyx and found a nearly mature seed inside. So the breeding experiment is back in session!
6 weeks of bloom down, 2-3 more to go. I believe the purple colored plant is dead, as a lot of its foliage died in previous weeks and hasn’t done much of anything this week.
The purple one died a few weeks ago, buds still wispy and underdeveloped. The seeds are also small, green, and soft. It just stopped growing after some foliage started to die. It had the same soil and amendments as the other one. This phenotype just didn’t like being grown in such a small pot (2 trade gallons ~= 1.6gal).
The second one looks like it could go for another week or so bud-wise, but even the popcorn seeds on the bottom are dark and fully ripe. As I’m not going to smoke it and only harvesting for seed, it is perfect and gives me some more room in one of my flower tents.
I’ll post the seed yield in a week or so after they dry. I’m not expecting any mature seeds from the dead one, but any guesses on how many the good one has?
I’m so happy. I just started harvesting the seeds from the half dead plant, and while some are immature, I have a lot of good-looking seeds so far from the plant I didn’t expect to find any, and I only did a few bottom larf buds so far. Back to it…
