Saving Bag of Seeds from 1960s and 1970s

Ultimately it’s up to Classic Genetix to decide but it’s nice to know how serious you take old seed restoration projects. Could be some important genetics in those if they pop. I’m sure anyone given the opportunity would try everything in their power to make them grow. I know I would :slightly_smiling_face:

Germinating seeds is not rocket science. It’s growing them out that may take a little finesse. In my experience, some of the old seeds I’ve germinated left no room for mistakes after they broke the surface until they reached a certain stage. Sometimes they’ll fight you the whole grow. If I were you, I’d drop a couple today just to see if they’re viable.

I agree, I’d hate to be the one to tell everyone I screwed them up. Really old seeds are really tricky. It’s gonna take extra time and care, and most like a dedicated space for the right environment until they are in the clear.

Best vibes and prayers to the group who is responsible for this. I can’t wait to see some results. :v:

it seems to me that the problem with this batch of seeds is the randomness of them. if they are truly a bunch of random seeds, then doing a preservation run with an open pollination would cross everything without knowing what got crossed with what. or am i overthinking it?

Te aprecio hermano!

First, I don’t want anyone disparaging @Elchischas . He’s not just one of the good ones, he’s a verified legend and anyone who knows how much he has contributed to the cannabis world gives him the respect he deserves (which is a LOT). There are some ding dongs on the forums, but he’s not one of them, he’s trying to make sure these things get the best chance they can, which I very much appreciate.

I’ve been working with old seeds since the 1990s, but I know the rarity of stuff like this and my own limitations. That being said, I’m in agreement with @Elchischas as Mystic has proven experience with these conditions. Snowhigh, AKBB, Kagyu and a few others would be on the list of course as they also have extensive experience.

The cannabis world is full of people out for their own gain, but it’s also full of old hippie nerds like @Elchischas and I that want to overgrow the world and make it a better place for everyone. I want to make sure these get the best chance they can and everyone who wants them has the ability to grow them. These seeds have been waiting 50-60 years, I’m fine with waiting as long as it takes to do it right.

Much love and respect.

Definitely a grab bag! Lord only knows what’s in here and I could probably visually separate them, but haven’t tried. I’d imagine if we can get any to pop, we’d want to clone each one of course and see what we’re working with. A true M/F would be the genetic lottery, but I’d be happy if we could get a good pheno of something classic that we’re able to identify, clone and share. Thankfully there are enough close representations of the classics, that if we found i.e. a Panamanian that was superb, we could always grab Snowhigh PR work and have fun that way. The mind reels at all the possibilities, super fun stuff!

I don’t understand buddy, you have a strict idea of those that will work for you on this line (with their inherent individual vision of how it should be done) and you make a public call at a time. No offense intended, but I don’t get the idea plainly.

He is also on the very very short list of breeders that will let the community get a crack at these after his successful germination. Many others hoard for personal gain.

It could be epic. Think of the possibilities.
Personally I do believe these can be separated out, at least by continent if not by individual landrace. We know what they will be…kind of.

That’s exactly right, thanks @Upstate. I simply want these to have the best chance at success. If I or anyone that doesn’t have a proven track record of being able to salvage old, maybe dead seeds attempts to germinate these and fails, that’s it. Game over. So I want the most capable hands working with them. I also want to make sure that aside from successful germination, that whoever I trust with these will make them widely and freely available to everyone that wants them.

This is a really cool project, I’ll be interested to see how it goes for you.

Also, if you turn off your “every bean on OG is up for grabs” brain, the meaning of the following:

Is NOT these beans are up for grabs. It means “look at what I’m doing”

Thanks man, and correct. Once there are viable plants to reproduce, i want everyone to have access. An expert hand has to reanimate them first :call_me_hand:

All my respect for You amigo.
as I said before
Few of us know the importance of these seeds
possibly the last of its kind
possibly contain a unique cannabinoid profile
possibly contain a unique profile of effects
the possibilities are wonderful!
we just can’t take it lightly
I’m sure Mystic Funk will take care of this, just wait a few days to his response.
bro, do you think it’s a single variety?
or is it a mix of many things?

The fella said it was a mix, he sold pot in the late 1960s through the mid 1970s and kept seeds of the bags he liked. He had a lot more and seemed to understand they were valuable so only gave us the small bag.

So there’s more of this?!!
Jesus C!! Just think about it!
If mystic Funk got success with the first batch
Must be more to try!
I mean if your buddy is able to share…
Do you told him how to store properly the seeds?
Try to convince him to give more seeds if mystic Funk work with it and if the seeds still be alive

Yeah, that guy definitely has something to gain by sharing with somebody who will refresh the genetics, vs. Just allowing them to sit in a bag!

That was my thought too, he was acting like he knew they were valuable yet had no friends or family that grew and didn’t grow himself, so maybe if we can get these to pop and give him a bag of his old flower I can convince him to part with more

Well that complicates things even more. It will certainly be an interesting journey between getting them to germinate, getting them to grow and trying to establish what exactly it is you got if they do get to growing. Hopefully the breeder you are asking has the time to do such a thing for you. If not I am sure you will find someone with the qualifications to take on such a project.

Personally I would not take on such a project. I am nowhere near qualified to do so. I will wish you the best of luck though. This could be like a step back in time and the resurrection of lines that might just be gone at this point. That is just super cool and an opportunity that does not come along very often. :v:

Are you going to document the grow here? Whoever it is that ends up growing them? Even if the person is not interested in posting, if you’re able to get them to take an occasional picture and keep us updated Id be appreciative! I LOVE bag seeds. It’s a stupid thing to some, but bag seed is my jam.

Same! The freebie I just picked from @Great_lakes_Genetics / @Strayfox was Hollywood Pure Kush x “late 70’s bag seed”…I had to
