Anyone Want To Do A Seed Hunt With Old Beans?

Hey OG

So I was given a bunch of beans from a generous grower last year, and I’m wondering if anyone would be willing to grow some out and make more for the community.

He said his mom was a hippie who traveled all over the states, and she used to collect all the seeds she found in all of her bud over the years.

He had more than he would ever need, so he sent some to me.

They were in old cookie tins and film canisters, and he says they are from the early 70s through the early 80s

:seedling:

Hopefully a lot of the older and somewhat lost genetics will be found in these beans.

We may never be able to put a name to a plant, but maybe something will stick out so much and carry such distinct characteristics that we can !
Who knows.

:herb:

I have been going through a lot, and I need to seriously take things easy for a bit.
I don’t want these to waste away in storage as they might actually have some long lost strains hidden in them.

So if anyone would be willing to pop a few, hunt through, share their findings to maybe find a name or lineage, and hopefully S1 a few keepers, I am more than happy to send them out.

It is definitely a bit of work, but I know it will be worth it.

I would do it, but I just can’t at the moment.
I don’t have it in me.

But who knows what could be hidden inside

I know during the time she was smoking and saving, some of these strains were floating around a lot:

Thai
Panama Red
Durban Poison
Maui Wowie
Columbian Gold

To name a few possibilities.

:UPDATE:

So I already have 2 members who want in on the hunt, and I’m excited to see what we find !

I have some left and can probably give out to
2 - 4 more people if anyone is interested.

This would be something that I would like to be displayed here for OG btw.
Grows we can follow to see if we can maybe get an idea of what something could be.

That’s definitely not easy, Possibly Improbable, but it’s also NOT completely necessary.
I thought it would be fun to try tho.

These seeds are, as I said, OLD…for a seed.
Around 50+ years old now.

I would definitely suggest using some methods from the
“Techniques for The Germination of Older Seeds”
thread

Found here:

I have a method that gave me amazing success for my other 50+ year old beans in there.
A few other growers here have also tried the method and had success with their older seeds as well.

I wrote it out in great detail and it can be found at post #153

But there are plenty of others who have posted techniques that they say worked for them as well, so try what you feel will work for you.

:v:

I just hope someone finds something keep worthy and hopefully will be able to share it here for others who want to enjoy.

I personally love the older strains, and it would be cool to see others dig through them.

Stay Safe OG
&
Thank you for everything

You know there are some GEMS in those genetics!

Gotta go through them, I’m stoked your doing this…I’ll be watching from the sidelines until I find an apartment

That’s awesome that she saved seeds…my buddy who is a little older than me always kicks himself for not saving beans from the 70’s-80’s San Diego California

Sounds like a great project I’d love to throw my name in if at all possible !!

Good luck with this. I have quite a few in old film canisters somewhere too. Tried germing some decades or more ago and nothing popped, before the internet days actually… Seeds from the frisbee rolling times… We just tossed most out the car window and smoked away, never did give an after thought 'bout the seeds or how to properly store them… Even if you get 1 to grow, would be great…

Good luck my dude.

I’ll be in the same journey as you, I know someone who’s friend used to tour with the Red Hot Chili Peppers when they first started and collected seeds too. I’m getting a fat vial so I can hunt. I believe I’m getting in in person April. I’m nervous. It’s going to be an interesting hunt

Good luck! I’m trying to pop late 60’s - mid 70’s seeds as we speak. I know the history and genetics, just a matter of, are they still alive?

Hope you guys find something awesome in the hunt. So hard to get these old school genetics.

I’ll send some good vibes to all the people involved in the hunt :seedling: :green_heart:

Why only S1? Are regs admitted? I believe that kind of old gens deserve to make regs (too) to save the most out of it. Don’t forget males carry their own goodness.

Otherwise congrats for this, very OGenerous! :+1:

S1 would be the backup operation before doing anything else.

I’ll throw my hat in to raise old beans, a few drops of hydrogen peroxide and nitrozyme can work wonders with old seeds.

I would absolutely take beans from ages ago.

And know they will be genuinely preserved and run. And how for the best genetics

Pm me if I fit the mold

would love to join in on this but my plate is very full
I’d like to see how these grow out though so gonna follow along for sure.
About 7 or 8 years ago and not long before my mentor passed away, he made a surprise visit and dropped off a bunch of seeds he had collected and kept over the years. A lot of it poorly labelled and hard to discern. I did pop some of what I only guessed was Kimo x Purple afghani. My mentor spelled it Kimo on his plant tags and was one of , if not the first grower outside the UBC plant research facility to receive that clone. They turned out to be something entirely different and were awesome plants though. The one I kept for a while stacked donkey dick colas that finished with a dank baby powder smell… shoulda kept that plant for breeding but I had no idea what it was in the end LOL I kept pictures though as there is more of those seeds I could pop. A bunch of others I have tried haven’t grown so I need to try the advanced techniques OG’ers have generously shared.

I’m so happy people seem to be just as excited as I am about this

I’ve received a few messages already with members asking if they can participate.

So as of now I think I have enough volunteers.

I’ll check to see how many seeds I have and if I think I have enough I’ll take on a few other growers.

As of now I have 5 who have shown interest, and I really appreciate them for this. I’m really hoping they can find something amazing :raised_hands:

I read all the comments, but I’m out of likes and I’ll respond to everyone when I get home.

Once I send everything out I will post the users name up top, and eventually a link for their grows.

Thank you OG
