In France it’s patate. In Quebec it’s pomme de terre. It really depends who you ask.

Dirt apple is a very mechanical translation of it, To a French speaker it is more “Apple of the earth/Soil” type of deal.
That or my French teacher is a massive c**t and taught me some proper dodgy French!

She was from Montreal and that explains a number of moments with French people despite my French Canadian uncle understanding my butchering of his mother tongue!
Though it does make me doubt the skills of the Examiner that marked my French Standard Grade as a passing mark.

Yes it’s quite a problem. Especially since they want to standardize it but nobody can agree what’s correct. But I’m just an Anglo who speaks French, what do I know?
