Strains Useful to Alzheimers/Dementia Patients

Really appreciate it and you making this thread, it’s definitely sent me down a rabbit hole of sorts

my sister sent me some of those seeds (she grows medical in a legal state far from me - helped keep her husband alive (esophageal cancer) for 5 years. he sadly passed 4yrs ago.) that were corssed with some bad dog progeny.
ox and runaway bride, ox and hillbilly wedding. something like that. they were 10+ year old seeds. sadly none popped. :frowning:
have never been able to find OX anywhere else… only thing i found were a bunch of bohdi fans arguing about a “the OX 2.0” reboot that it was nothing like the original blah blah. trail ended there for me.

:frowning:

according to the studies it DOES help. even if this person is not getting any other treatments, the THC ~should~ help slow the plaques down and in some cases remove them.

what i can’t tell you is dosages. i’m still trying to figure all that out. and i think that will be a patient to patient basis. medications are typically given by patient weight.

keep an eye on this thred. i will post the book my wife is using. perhaps you can recommend to his family?

I’ll definitely try to, I hope they’re receptive as well.

ok. this is the first book she was reading. this doctor has some clinics and associates. she contacted them and ended up getting some tests done.
Dr. Dale E. Bredesen (MD)
The End of Alzheimers

this book is a bit on the dry/scientific side. he has been able to successfuly reverse alz if found and treated quick enough.
i think there were some seminars of theirs on youtube. as well. i remember her logging in and watching. reversed patients got up and told their stories. cool and encouraging stuff.
i will have to ask her about the youtube links later. she’s going out to her sister’s bachelorette party.

Well I hope she has a great time and I’ll be purchasing this book soon just for personal reading as well. My great grandfather and grandmother both suffered from Alzheimer’s so it’ll be better to have knowledge of prevention and treatment on hand for any case. After reading through some of the other studies posted, I actually have a breeding group together that I think fits the bill to some degree! This was intended to start working towards a memorial strain for my grand uncle who passed from cancer 3 weeks ago but it could contain the results for a lot of conditions as it seems.

her is the other book she refers to alot. she said this one was more about people’s experiences with family members and what they did to deal with certain symptoms. trial and error stuff compiled together in book format. has some ideas for newcomers to try out with their loved ones. she said she liked this format better as it was less dry/scientific.

a youtube interview with Dr.Dale

i think his clinic has a channel. have to look later. chaos in the house. gotta go deal.

I would find the top three terpenes in every strain on your list, write them down next to the name and look for patterns. That’s what I did with my list and found undeniable patterns.

that was the next step when i finally finish the list. i estimate next year’s outdoor crop will finish it up.
i have 2 primaries. (Acapulco Gold and Grandaddy Purple) and 2 backups (blue dream, OG Kush) so far out of all the strains i have grown and tested. some that failed may be revisited as the dry vape changes things. terp effects will be more profound than from oil or gummies.

so let’s start. you can actually help me/save me some time if you can compile that. (please and thanks!)

quick internet search pulls this up:

GranDaddy Purple -
camphene, linalool, valencine (there HAS to be more)
edit: found more for GDP
Myrcene, beta-Caryophyllene, alpha-Pinene, Linalool, Limonene, Humulene, beta-Pinene,

Acapulco Gold -
caryophyllen, humele, limonene, myrcene, pinene (there HAS to be more)

Blue Dream -
beta caryophyllene, limonene, linalool, myrcene, para cymene, terpinolene

OG Kush -
alpha cedrene, alpha pinene, alpha terpinol, beta caryophyllene, borneol, cadinene, camphene. citral, delta limonene, eugenol, farnesene, fenchol, humulene, linalool, myrcene, nerolidol, ocimene, orange terpenes, phytol, terpinolene

EDIT: @Addams_family_farm - hey man. your borneol showed up in OG Kush

So from what I have gathered from the two threads is that GDP is her primary night time and OG Kush is her back up day time?

So does that mean that blue dream is her back up night time and Acapulco gold is the primary day time?

It is hard to find terpene profiles that are positively certain unless the information comes from the breeder/grower. The info is different on different websites. I’m guessing this is because these traits can sometimes vary a bit by seed and by harvest time. With that said I see a pattern here.

It is important to remember that each terpene listed has a different %, The same terpene could be the third terpene on this list in two strains but each strain will have different amounts of this terpene.

Day

  • Acapulco Gold -caryophyllen, humelene , limonene, myrcene, pinene,
  • OG Kush - Myrcene, beta-Caryophyllene, limonene,

Night

  • GranDaddy Purple - Myrcene, beta-Caryophyllene, alpha-Pinene, Linalool
  • Blue Dream -beta caryophyllene, limonene, linalool, myrcene

Nagative effects (I’m guessing both of these were tried as night time samples which would make sense of the negative effects)

  • Purple Kush - Myrcene, alphaPinene, beta-Caryophyllene,
(Purple Kush has four phenotypes, three of which typically express sativa influence while the fourth exhibits more indicia-like characteristics. Found this on leafy)

  • Northern LIghts- Myrcene, beta-Caryophyllene, limonene
(notice this is the same profile as in the back up day time, so it probably would not be a good night time for her.) I’m guessing there might also be pinene after limonene.

I don’t think your patients reactions are much different than other people.

She obviously likes the Myrcene and beta-Caryophyllene which are present in everything she likes. This is the case with most medical strains in my observations.

In her day time strains there is Limonene present in the third tier of both strains. This is common for most people to feel an up lifting effect from limonene.

To understand my terpene theory you need to take in consideration the tolerance. Similar to our receptors building a tolerance for the THC they are also being filled with the terpenes (or the CBD’S that I think are being effected by the terpenes), our body grows a tolerance to these as well.

So in your patients case; she is constantly filling her receptors with Myrcene and beta-Caryophyllene (which are what I think are giving the majority of the healing benefits for most users). Because this is what her body is craving and needs to heal and is being consumed the most there is a significant tolerance for these two terpenes. During the day the receptors are also receiving the limonene, and because the Myrcene and beta-Caryophyllene have a higher tolerance, the limonene is giving the user an up lifting feeling.

Then at night time, in GDP the limonene is removed and replaced with Linalool and Pinene. Pinene is an uplifting (psycoactive) terpene but when it is in this third tier behind Myrcene and beta-Caryophyllene the effect is commonly relaxing (especially if it is followed by linalool), with a minimal edge or angst. Linalool is a very relaxing terpene and in combination with Myrcene and beta-Caryophyllene, creates a very sedative effect. Which is why I still think that Old Family Purple would be better for her as her primary night time than GDP as OFP has Myrcene, beta-Caryophyllene and Linalool.

I say this because you mentioned the negative effects she had from purple kush- Myrcene, alphaPinene, beta-Caryophyllene. When alpha Pinene is moved into the second teir above Caryophyllene the psychoactive and uplifting effects are increased and can lead to users having really weird side effects. Especially when used at the wrong time (at night) when they are are needing the linalool to help relax, or after filling the receptors with limonene all day(another uplifting psychoactive). So instead of the relaxing terpene she needed she got alphaPinene and she had a bad reaction to it. I would stay away from every strain with alphaPinene in the 1st and 2nd tier.

Similarly; The northern lights didnt have any of the Linalool that her body was craving to relax and had more Limonene (which she was getting all day) and probably alpha Pinene (or something else) that combined to tweek her out.

I’m guessing that the blue dream doesnt always have the best night time effects which is why it is a back up not the primary, this is because the limonene is high in the second teir. I assume she likes it sometimes because of the Linalool and she has a bit of a tolerance to the limonene after using it all day, but I bet sometimes using more limonene hurts her more than the Linalool helps her.

I think everyone is responding differently to the same strain more so because they have a different tolerance going at that time than because everyone’s brain chemistry is extremely different (which is also the case sometimes). For instance:
A person who isn’t consuming products with Myrcene and beta-Caryophyllene all the time isnt going to need the Linalool to go to sleep like your patient does. If they are using something without either with uplifting terpenes in the top two tiers, then when they use either Acapulco gold or Og Kush they are going to feel very relaxed.

In every case; it is important not to harvest her meds early so the resins mature with the correct terpenes/CBD’s you are looking for. Also, the bottom larfy nugs and the leaf will all have the wrong terpene profile because the resin has not matured, sensitive patients shouldn’t use leaf or larf.

That’s my theory in a nutshell. Understanding this in this way has helped me significantly, hope it can help other people too.

Bless your heart!! Thank you for documenting what you can. Research like this should have been done decades ago instead of trying to eradicate this wonderful plant. Peace

Amazing post. Seems to be a few Sativa crosses I recognize. I wonder if tested would pure Sativas work? What’s your best guess?

For those who have family with or developing dementia, a diet rich in walnuts helps prevent and reduce symptoms of AH and dementia so several studies have found.

I would also suggest THE LIST – Granny Storm Crow's List I think this the most recent.
There are going to be many papers that still demonize THC, as part of the medicine.
I’ll agree, that to much THC like most smoking cultivars seek to make, hell I know I do, but this was my reason to work the hermaphrodites plants, there was some, but no ski slopes!!
Many pilgrims, will have a bad experience, from to much.
If you infuse some cannabis oil into coconut oil, and use that as cream, coconut oil will help the goodies absorb through the skin.
The plants root balls, can be cleaned, boiled, and used:
https://sensiseeds.com/en/blog/the-importance-of-cannabis-roots-medical-potential-history-and-current-uses/
Sensi seeds, is not a science paper, but worth reading and then searching out the bits of good information there.
I’d beg @Gardenartus to stop in and give her opinions, as she is one of the smartest cookies, with edible’s and aliments I know of today! Amazing wealth of knowledge, and a true human being!
Sincerely webe

Daytime
Primary = Acapulco Gold … but we used it so long she grew a tolerance.
Secondary = blue dream. works, but not as good as AG

Afternoon
Primary = OG Kush - works, but not as good as AG or BD
Secondary = ???

Night Time
Primary = Grandaddy Purple. this knocks her out. she snores all night. wakes up refreshed and in good mood

I would recommend looking into strains high in CBDV(CBD-C3)/THCV(THC-C3) as a possibility for daytime since they can modulate the high CB1 agonism (and brain fog) that can come from high THC-C5 chemotypes. Definitely useful for my own cognitive issues stemming from concussions and long COVID, specifically executive function, attention, and short term memory. Not the same conditions I know, but there is some overlap in what can be effective because all involve neuro-inflammatory pathways.

I am growing out a Valley of Pines CBDV plant this year from Hoku Seed Co along with ACE’s Ethiopian Highlands (high THCV) and just harvested the Valley of the Pines with only a small amount of budrot outdoors considering the rain. Ethiopian is still a while off. I’ll let you know how they end up once they’re fully processed.

first off, thank you for helping me work on this.
sussing out the terpenes was next step when i finished with all the testing. i am still looking for some seeds. i REALLY want to find some of the lavender. that one has the terps (on paper) she needs according to both our research. i can’t find them.

you ran into the same problem i did when i started this. go to any seed seller that posts their strain’s terpene profile and they are ALL different. the accuracy of what’s in it is off, or the genetics are so varied/different that they are reporting accurately and it’s going to be even harder to find strains throwing out the proper profiles (hence my thought of trying to breed something that checks all those boxes). it got a little daunting at that (less informed) level of my knowledge. so i put it on the back burner and left it there for later. i’m not at your level of study with the terpenes, but i feel comfortable enough now with them that we can certainly have an in depth conversation like this. thanks dude. appreciate you.

the deeper i get into it the more i know i’m missing a LOT of puzzle pieces. and inaccurate information doesn’t help much.

your theories are good, but you got some of the strains mis-categorized. let me explain more.

the idea is/was (the feeding tube changes much!) to have her dose each mealtime.
mornings - requires: energy, good mood, creativity, pain free, and appetite.
sometimes she has therapies or chairobics classes or visiting nurses. sometimes she has to draw or paint. she needs to be in a receptive mood. dark and grouchy won’t work. Acapulco Gold was/is great for this. sheis in a good mood. smiling, laughing, and interested in her classes and therapies (to an extent… she does have her limits. when she doesn’t want to do something she gets petulant)
Blue dream is a half decent backup for mornings. it doesn’t check all the boxes, but it is close. also an alternate for afternoons.

Afternoons - requires: relaxed mood, appetite, pain free, winding down.
OG Kush fills this role pretty well. it was hit or miss sometimes with appetite, but the appetite thing also doubled as dysphagia (difficulty swallowing). she was hungry but didn’t want to eat because she couldn’t swallow. maybe it caused pain? we are not sure. the disease makes it real hard to communicate. they want to talk and tell you things but can’t articulate. sometimes they just talk nonsense. gets them frustrated and angry and then you get frustrated and angry because you don’t know what to do to fix things.
sigh.
OG Kush was another one that helped mellow her out when she was having anxiety attacks. GDP did as well. Her anxiety attacks were the worst before she was diagnosed. she would get so keyed up she’d start crying and shaking and wailing and wouldn’t stop. would have to take her to hospital and they would sedate her and monitor her overnight.

Evenings - requires: appetite, deep relaxation, full nights sleep.
GDP is king here so far. she gets full night sleep. snores. wakes up refreshed and in good mood. nothing else does it like that. have tried a bunch. purple punch was close. peyote gorilla was close. but nothing like GDP.
i have a bunch of stuff flowering outside that are on deck for evening testing. bubba kush, the spice, purple kush, purple bubba kush. another week or two before they finish. getting close.
