- syzygy's journal - the clown show

I’ll be curious to see what you get from the field trip compared to the 3 I’m running presently. Mine are in week 6 I want to say.

Malawi seedlings were moved to low intensity clone tent for space reasons. One of them has pretty narrow leaves already. A bit tempted to just throw them in the flower tent as is.

All 4 SSDDs have rooted so I have to transplant those later - soaking pots in bleach for a few hours now while I take the dogs.

Also I’m liking the TK grown in coco a lot. I feel like it’s probably higher quality than my organically grown TK. Smells stronger, and seems stickier as well. In any case, it’s good enough that I’m not second guessing my switch to jacks/coco thankfully, because I just restocked with more Part A / B…

They’re looking good though! I would think about starting to flip them soon, you’re not concerned with yield usually, and it may be advantageous to help manage them if they turn into stretchy beasts.

Have you found this to be the easiest way to clean them? I recently bought a brush attachment for my cordless drill that has a few different size rotatory brushes, it has made cleaning the plastic pots, and other grow equipment pretty easy… still wish i had a dedicated dishwasher i could throw all my pots in, that would be the ultra lazy way…

I meant to ask you about any differences in the soil versus coco grown stuff. Cool that you’re liking the coco. I think from a ease of use standpoint, it’s hard to be beat. The Tahoe came out great this round too. I’m building out my auto watering system today, I’ve noticed a huge improvement in my coco grows with being very consistent in watering and feed level/EC. You still using a Apera PH pen? I’m thinking about grabbing another one, my Bluelab is dead.

Awesome costume!!! Hope you got lots of pup treats!

I actually have some of those brushes as well for my cordless Dewalt, and I do use it for cleaning stuff, just nothing grow related yet. The plastic pots I’m soaking are either 3 or 4" square pots for temporary moms, and I think the plastic is probably a bit too thin to use a motorized brush like that on. For thicker pots it doesn’t sound like a bad idea though.

It’s possible the TK from my last soil batch is a bit smoother than the coco TK when smoked, but that may have something to do with the dry/cure. It’s hard to confidently form an opinion with small scale grows and having only grown the cut a few times still. Definitely not a big enough difference for me to worry about it.

Ya that did look very nice for sure. That said, so did your stuff grown organically too haha. Do you think the Tahoe is on par with your previous organic runs? I was wondering about the consistent feed / ec part of that comment too - does the PH drift at all in your reservoir and do you have to mitigate it? Seems like when I mix a gallon of Jacks, PH it, and let it sit for a few days the PH is back in the mid 6 area.

Yeah, I went the whole grow without calibrating it and so I decided to do so at the end and I think it was only .1 off on the PH 4 liquid. I have been storing it with that kcl solution or whatever it is in the cap as well… Seems to be a good tool, thanks @HolyAngel for the recommendation on that one!

That’s interesting you think the coco may be better on the TK. I’ve often started to research coco growing but I get overwhelmed and give up, just to revert back to living soil.

Well it’s worth pointing out that when I grow organically I am almost always growing in very small pots. It’s not a fair comparison of organic vs salts, it’s more an obvious case of salts producing superior plants when constricted to a tiny pot. For how I grow though yes, my first coco batch appears to at least be on the level to the previous organic run.

The learning curve with coco isn’t really that big of a deal, but investing into PH meters and everything before you’re sure you want to commit is a bit of an annoyance. All I did for the last grow was follow the instructions on Jack’s website using Part A and Part B from start to finish

3.7G Part A
2.5G Part B
.9 G Epsom salts

and then I PH the water to 5.8-6.0

Very simple and easy.

To get into it I had to purchase

Apera PH pen
cheap Milligram scale
PH Down
Jacks Part A
Jacks Part B

and the Coco coir

so it does require a bit of an investment up front, but after that it appears to be cheaper even if you buy pre-rinsed coco since you can get away with smaller pots. The time I’ve saved on mother maintenance alone has been worth it to me. Obviously the cost savings are compared to an organic run where you are buying inputs and not recycling or doing some DIY practices.

Yeah, that one looks cool. They all look cool, I’m super-excited to see how these grow in your setup.

Yeah it is. I had to look at it for a second, trying to figure out how he got the pup to stand on its “hind legs” like that.

Ya, we’ll see how they perform. The plan is to keep them in the small pots until they get a bit larger while in flower and then transplant them again.

Moved them in the flower tent last night making today Day 1.

SSDD F2 & others appear to be viable too

I sowed one of your Triple Sunshine x SSDD and a damn pill bug ate it once it came up. I’ve got 2 more in its place now. Have you grown those out yet?

I have some of those in veg right now and it’s giving off some woodsy almost lumber-like smells. I haven’t flipped yet.

A handful of people on this site have grown them, but no, I haven’t grown anything using that SSDD male yet. If I grow out the SSDD F2s that are starting to come up those will be the first.

I know off the top of my head that @DirtySlowToes and @InTheWoods have grown a few of them out. About to take the dogs but will update this post with links when I get home. If they want to chime in that’s cool too.

Oh you’re growing the triple sunshine x sunshine daydream? Party on. I also relate to the seedling eating punks. Those buggers are fast. They’ve been easy growing for me though. I got two pretty nice hybrid-y mixes, one seemingly SSDD leaner and one seemingly triple sunshine leaner. So four females. They veg quickly and clone easily. Pretty similar leaf structure. 2/4 formed what I would consider running colas, the other 2 had more space between internodes and a nuggier structure. They finished around 70 days but maybe could go a little longer depending on pheno. They’ve all provided pretty pleasing smoke that ranges from lemon bar type sweetness to sour gassy licorice to a more traditional woodsy, complex ‘kushy’ smell. I have been smoking some all day actually. People report it to be pretty potent, too. I kept #1 and #3 to run more. #1 is most vigorous and had the most stretch. Roughly 2.5x. #3 stretched 2x maybe a touch more. #4 stretched like 1.5-1.75x and #2 stretched roughly 1.5-1.75x also. Any other questions you can ask because I feel like I’m rambling! Haha

Pheno #1

Pheno #2

Pheno #3 - dealt with a touch of mold in these tops. Densest of the four.

@ABushOfKush

I’m trying to get back into them. They are great smoke.

Yeah, it’s hard to tell without doing a side by side (organic versus salt) and drying/curing at the same time.

I haven’t really tried much of it yet, I’m still trimming it up, just finished the 1 gallon bag plant, just over 6oz from that plant, so I think I’ll def hit my estimate of half P from those two plants. Back to trimming the other…

Yeah, it does drift slightly. I run an air stone and pump on a timer in the rez that comes on every hour for 15 minutes or so, it definitely makes the PH drift upwards. Right off the bat after mixing my PH is in a good range (around 5.8ish), but after two days or so it’ll will drift up to 7. I just add a few ml of Gen Hydro PH down, I’ve had a quart that will last me forever. That’ll bring it back down to 5.0 to 5.5ish… I’ve just been using the drops lately, so hard to tell for sure…

Cool, do y’all have the cheap version or the more expensive one? I think one is like 35 bucks right now, the other is $90-100. I’m gonna need to dial it in more this next round…

Thanks for saving me the effort on digging up links!

I just checked and it’s the 35$ one, but I think I paid 45 or something like that at the time. It is 35 right now though. It came with a small bottle of PH 4 and PH 7 calibration solution but did not come with kcl storage solution. I think that was around 10$ or so.

Do you use a drip system? That’s I think the confusion on my end.

No, I use a small watering can. I’d love to have a drip system but I don’t have the height to work in drainage and a reservoir. Maybe some day I’ll figure something out, but for the time being I’m sticking with hand watering. If it gets on the dry side it’s not hard to re-hydrate either, unlike peat-based mixes.

Yeah I just have to automate my grows hence why I love growing in earthboxes with their 3 gallon reservoir.

I know many coco growers who swear by it though and I’ve been intrigued.

If you have the height, then I’m sure there are plenty of options. I’d love to have just a normal flood table so that I could allow a bit more runoff at least… That said, organics have worked really well for me too. SIPs look great if you have the space as well. I know if I did that self draining saucer guide posted in this thread earlier that eventually I’d run into some leak issues or something based on how often I move stuff around.

Something I’m really happy about is that I’ve only seen gnats once since swapping over to coco, and they were easy enough to get rid of with just a few sticky traps. Not the experience that I have with soil at all.

Left the watering can in the tent for this shot

some more crappy static lighting Triangle Kush test stacks. Seems like if I had a decent light then it would be a lot easier than using a flash.

That’s the downfall of soil, the damn unwanted guests. Fungus gnats love the soil I use too.

It seems the drip systems are mainly set up for a 4x4 tent. I have 2x4 tents and would ideally grow small pots in a straight line and I can’t figure out a rig for that.
