The Apothecarium - Outdoors / Organic / Medical

hash is something i played with my first year. pretty labor intensive IMO. i haven’t really revisited it… yet…

with all the stuff we have going on with abuela, i doubt i’ll be revisiting it anytime soon.

i keep jars of kif from the trimming, and just top bowls or sprinkle on my joints from time to time.

appreciate your compliments and stoppin’ by. thanks.

Outdoor 2024 - Update

cooler (for us 80’s and 90s) temperatures have stuck around. i think this helps the plants to finishing up on schedule instead of dragging out like they have the last few years still in the 100’s in sept…
the indica dominant plants are finishing up nicely despite still battling with the bug menace. i still keep finding pockets here and there. they have been REALLY bad this year. still have kept them to isolated fan leaves. zero webbing (so far - knocks on wood).
didn’t really get to detailed with photos this time. it seems i’m going to have to come up with some more trellising for the ends - acapulco gold is fixin’ to fall over and purple haze is busting out of the “greenhouse”.
also having problems with the AC GDP getting FAR too big and heavy for it’s britches… as well as growing into the walking aisle. gotta prop them up also.
always something going on in the halls of valhalla.

on to the meager photos!

having a hard time walking through. more trellis needed

i beam with pride and then remember trimming… alone… and my smile quickly fades… lol

Nice jungle man and I def don’t envy the trimming needed for the harvest. Man I bet it’s a lovely smell out there

appreciate your compliment.

lol… nope. not looking forward to the trim. got a few in there looking like they’re going to be trouble.

some of them do smell quite nice. sour diesel is concerning tho… smells like hot garbage… and it’s not even done. cali bay dream smells nice as does (surprisingly) purple haze. PPD smells nice also (the bugs like it too…)

i didn’t take the time to highlight some of the plants putting on a nice show. took some time today to wander through the jungle and snap some shots.

The AC GDP farewell tour
still sad to watch her go, but she is going out in frosty, sticky and fragrant style. the bugs have been a pain in the BALLS this entire grow, but i’m pretty certain she’s going to finish nicely. (as will the clone buckets beside her)
i’m estimating she’s at about the week 6ish mark in terms of flowering. 3 more weeks.

good early frost show. more to come

nice little nugs all the way up the branches

there are several nice “top cola” branches

top down view

nose: sweet, berries/grapes, a touch of fuel. very pleasant

The Rest of the Garden
farewell tour for AC GDP mom aside, several others are stacking up nicely and putting on color shows.

PPD is putting in some work. sadly the bugs have been all over this one as well, but we will finish strong.

the color show belongs to black sugar…

super impressed how blimburn super lemon haze is stacking and frosting up.

had to pull some droopy branches over to the side trellis. Purple Haze is stacking up real nice. i was kind of ambivalent about this one. it has been a contender all along.

stacking and packing still belong to cali bay dream. its getting droopy… even with trellis support. :worried:
starting to get some sweet and fuel/earth scents. smells nice.

all top colas will crush the CANparison…

Til next time.

bugs. final mass attack wave of the season. they’re everywhere. eating everything. been getting home late, so been watering in the dark. leaving early also so morning watering in early light. and also… not wearing my glasses.
took a long walk through today with my coffee and got pretty pissed. they 're on everything. even the plants that were resistant. i just got done spraying them off… AGAIN. no more neem this late in season. spinosad and citric acid.
will re-spray again tonight to finish off the tank.
i will bring them to harvest, but these mofos did some damage in 3 days. >:(

f^cking bugs.

sour diesel had no bugs this entire time. this week it got gangbanged. all the way up. even some webs started in the top colas i can’t reach. they got my wrath. also some weird stuff going on with branches completely drying out. some damages to the main stem down lower. i just culled a bunch of the dead sh^t out and surveyed the damage. and some healthy branches snapped off also while cleaning out the dead. this is one thing i DISLIKE immensely form HSC. they have some genetics in their line of plants that produce lots of colas but have weak spindly easy to snap branches. this sour diesel is no exception. just lost some nice top colas today with branches snapping.

beyond all that, got some plants getting ready to finish up. got some nice bud pron.

The sudden die off of a big branch can often be stem borer damage. Then bore a small hole into the stem and then crawl in. Usually kills off the entire branch above the bore hole very quickly. Sucks about the bugs for sure, I know you put in a ton of work and take a big risk growing outdoors.

Does the “bore hole” look charred/blackened? It looked like bug damage, but never seen it turn black like that.

But again these hsc plants seem to share this weak branch trait. I broke 2 healthy branches just reaching thru to pull dead stuff.

There’s usually a little pile of what looks like sawdust around or under the branch. If you cut the branch off that’s dead you can see the bug inside the stem. Usually the first sign is a very fast drooping of the leaves on just one branch and then it dies off rapidly. @Hashpants probably knows best how to deal with them as he’s a really experienced outdoor guy.

looking for piles of sawdust going to be hard to tell this morning. had biblical rain storm last night. woke up to a bunch of new broken branches on several plants.

looking at sour diesel this morning shows more branches dead/dying that were healthy yesterday. dammit. your borer theory is holding weight. never dealt with those before. will look into it more in depth later when it dries out some more. got a LOT of people coming today for abuela. they’re supposed to change the catheter today, and she has ANOTHER infection. (sigh) she started the antibiotics last night. going to be a nonstop doctor/nurse/therapist visit day.

i have basically had enough time to go out, clean out the snapped branches, and shake the excess water out of the top colas. rain storms have been on my mind for the past few weeks. have been concerned about how the tallest plants would handle the water weight… and they did about as well as expected.

noting a LOT of improvements and changes for next year. clearly growing plants this big require far more trellising and support than i had anticipated/installed. already have some designs in mind with available materials… but that doesn’t help this current crop all that much. i have only a handful of bamboo stakes left.

had a hand of God rain storm come through last night. we haven’t had rain like that in well over 3 months. did some damage to the garden. lost a few branches and top colas despite my efforts to trellis and stake things in anticipation of october rainstorms.
most affected was sour diesel and AC GDP clones in the small buckets. lost some branches, saved some branches. Sour diesel also seems to be battling with some insect that has bored into the main stem down low. everything above it is dying fast. f^cking bugs

sour diesel lost some branches from the storm but also has some insect issues.

hey @FirstCavApache64 and @Hashpants - does this look like the insect damage in question? see the lateral stems are dead and colas above dying/drying while the rest of the plant is healthy?

the AC GDP clones lost some big branches and a lot more on the backside snapped. i’ve got them propped up. none of them needed tape. they should pull through, but going to be wasting energy repairing instead of flowering.

If you dont see borer holes and swelling in the stalk, its likely something with the base of those limbs. I see that on wierdly formed revegged clones outdoors. They are not connected correctly at the base or there could be a bit of pythium or rot in the base. Hope this helps ya buddy. GL

thanks for response. i will look tomorrow if we have favorable weather.

what do you use to kill the borers?

BTk for prevention somewhat. When i see a drill hole i just stick my pocket knife blade tip in and slice once down the middle about 2 in above and down to the entry point in an attempt to kill it. Some folks use a guitar string into the hole.

ahhh… a “hands on” kill… i can appreciate that.

here buggy buggy buggy… (whistles)

Wielders of the guitar string do notice a satisfying pop !

i don’t have any guitar strings, but i do have some nice long precision screwdrivers…

you’re getting my hopes up that it is a bug. lol

i suspect it is a bug tho as the rest of the plant is hanging in there. the dying/drying damage seems to be on only one branch. when i pulled one of the dead ones off earlier, it looked like something HAD dug a hole in, but it was blackened. wasn’t sure what to make of it, hadn’t ever seen it, but had other pressing matters (and downed plants) to prop back up, so let it go.

will definitely check it tomorrow (weather permitting).
thanks man. appreciate you.

The hole with the stem swell above the cat is in the swelled area.

whelp…

finally got around to messing with sour diesel. pulled out all the dead and dying. cut everything off below the bore hole. essentially cut out about 1/4 of the top colas.

f^cking bugs… :rage:

washed what i could, will compost the rest. hopefully i got rid of the problem and i can limp the rest of the plant along to the finish line. will have to keep an eye on it.

dead and soon to be dead was cut out.

big empty space in the center now.

hopefully what’s left finishes up properly.

this has been the worst year for bugs to date.

Outdoor 2024 - Update

this is the part where my legendary impatience sets in. i just want them all to finish.
now.

ran a lot more sativa and sativa dom hybrids this year. they are going to be a bit longer.
on the bright side, PPD, CBD, BHB and AC GDP are all very close. if not this week, next for sure. i suspect PPD will be first. a LOT of ambers showing. i am waiting it one more week so the purple colorations come in. they are just starting to show up. according to HSC if your bring it 9 weeks it will turn purple. so far, it’s growing as advertised. smells good too.

hurry up b!tches !!!

CBD - cali bay dream is competing with PPD for first finish. i think PPD will take it.

AC GDP 1 - super frosty and sticky.

AC GDP 2 - damn bugs marring my chances at the cover of high times… (lol)

PPD - this one smells really nice.

PH - just keeps getting fatter and fatter. and man… this smells amazing. best one out there.

SLH - super impressed with how this one turned out. if it weren’t for the damn bugs it would also be a high times cover contender.
another gem for the blimburn haters.
