TrevorLahey's Low Budget Growing Part 5: "The Ghost and the Darkness"

Those ones with 2 weeks to go should be good, the couple of days ones are not too shabby either man. Should give you something to smoke at least.

What extraction method? Got tons of dry sift want to try something different. Plus Iā€™m running a 120micron screen so i could do fluid extraction on what is left in it

Sorry for the late reply, but my extraction method of choice is the classic QWISO method but instead of isopropyl I use methanol, which gives way better yields at the expense of some terp loss and a bit of extra wax/chlorophyll in the end product. And cheap, can buy a big bottle of Methyl Hydrate at any hardware store for cheap, and if you have a lot of material itā€™s way more cost effective than other solvents like buthane or isopropyl.

Does it evaporate any better than iso? Might make some oil this weekend

Thanks for replying at all lol anything special about purging that youā€™ve learned?

Methanol will air purge just fine usually can leave it overnight at room temp or a little warmer and it will evaporate fully.

Iā€™m impatient though so I usually just purge it off in a pyrex pie plate on top of a skillet turned down to its lowest setting lol

Another upside is itā€™s a bit less volatile than ISO, ā€œsaferā€ if you will, as in it doesnt fill a room with noxious gasses. Its odorless for the most part so you should still use proper ventilation when doing solvent extractions, but its stoic properties are much less dangerous than ISO or buthane.

But dont take my word for it, heres a study that explains why itā€™s a better solvent:

Theres other info out there too. My only personal tip would be to use short 30 second soaks if you want a higher quality product. If youā€™re okay with a lower quality but higher return than aim for closer to 1 minute (but not any longer). Can do a second wash too but I find the first one gets most of what we are after. Everything else is the same as QWISO including straining, winterizing, re-winterizing the info is out there.

The soak time is basically all thatā€™s separating this product from RSO, which uses longer soak times (sometimes even overnight) to pull out more of the waxes/chlorophyll/whole plant material.

Also regarding yields assuming there is high quality input youā€™ll expect to see returns as high as 30% but I tend to get about 18-22% back on high quality frosty trim. Bud gets me a bit higher.

Is winterizing when it goes into a vac chamber? (Iā€™ll look it up in a bit). Iā€™ve got a vac chamber for wood stabilizing I could use if itā€™s a benefit

Winterizing in this case just means freezing the product, doing the extraction, then putting the solution back into the freezer prior to purging. Helps separate the good stuff from the waxes/undesirable contaminants.

Itā€™s not necessary but it will definitely give you a higher quality product in the end.

Been almost 2 weeks since my last update so I guess Iā€™ll let everyone know whatā€™s been going on.

I chopped a few of the plants in the Mars tent, they all grew to be just single cola plants with more than 10g each. Still a few left that are finishing. Very disappointing grow but is what it is.

Temps are still low and RH is still high. Been trying to find some exhaust set points for my TH16 the last few days but things have gotten overall colder and more humid (18C/75%RH in the Bridgelux grow, 18C/55%RH in the Mars grow) and thatā€™s not making diagnosing my issues any easier as itā€™s just more non-ideal variables in the mix.

But the one smoking gun Iā€™ve found was about a week ago when I decided to run some tests on my runoff and found it to be very high EC so I did a complete recycle with full strength nutrients (900ppm MaxiBloom/100ppm calimagic) at around 5.7-5.8pH and overnight the plants improved 100%. Been doing that every few days since.

I did this again today and they are looking great in comparison to where they were. This pic doesnt really do it justice but heres where Iā€™m at today.

I am glad they are improving for you Trev, My plants have been so high in nitrogen this last 8 weeks, I dont know if your plants need more N, or its just the light, and what leaves should look like normally lol.

The light/white balance definitely makes them look yellow and they kinda are but its exaggerated in this pic. They hadnā€™t been fed in 4 or 5 days and had used up a lot of what was left in the coco. I expect them to be improved tomorrow if my assumptions are correct.

50-100 autos!! Do it up, bro! Outdoor is always such a gamble. I see it like roulette - place bet on black, ball lands on redā€¦double up, bet on black, lands on redā€¦double up, bet on black, ball lands on BLACK!!!

Are these in 1 gallons?

This is what you use to do your shatter? How do you strain fast enough to not go past the 30-60 second mark? I did a qwiso and used a regular strainer, cheesecloth then coffee filter and it still took me about 40 mins to do 1/4 lbs of materialā€¦
I was looking at paint strainers at an auto body shopā€¦hmmmm

Yeah 1 gallon and in coco/perlite. Iā€™ve had success with these in the past have even grown QP plants in them no problem. I wanna get back to that point lol.

As said Iā€™m sloppy and dont mind a bit of extra junk in the end product so I just squeeze it out and thatā€™s it but when Iā€™m going for quality Iā€™ll just strain it through a stainless steel strainer or cheesecloth first as it drains quicker. Youā€™ll have some flakes of material come through the screen but just strain them through a coffee filter and then back into freezer overnight.

Just depends on how picky you are lol

And then use a double boiler to evaporate the methyl hydrate?
What brand do you use? Stupid questionā€¦but does is there any kind of ā€œmedical gradeā€ or super high quality stuff?..or itā€™s all the same?..just thinking about additives and impurities

The stuff I use is always labeled as 99.8% Methanol. Iā€™ve used a few brands theyā€™re all the same. I donā€™t use a double boiler just pour into a pyrex pie plate then onto a warm skillet thingy on a low setting. It will also evaporate at room temp if you leave it for a day or two.

I found this onlineā€¦says 99.9%

Thatā€™s the stuff. Wayyyy cheaper than Iso and more pure.
