Virtual Reality & All things VR

Any fellow Overgrow members into VR? I asked this in the Video Game thread the other day… but I didn’t get much of a response… makes sense as VR isn’t just for gaming and is really more of a topic on its own.

I haven’t really paid much attention to VR until I heard that the Meta Quest 3 (formerly Occulus) had just released. I see the Quest 3 ($499-$649 USD) has been very well received and folks are saying it’s the best VR Headset to date in terms of actual quality except when it’s compared to Apple’s Vision Pro ($2499 USD). That’s quite a difference in price.

I have yet to make the leap into VR but I’m standing on the edge and it’s been super tempting.

When I started thinking about all this… I started off… where else? On YouTube.

Watching videos like this really piqued my interest.

The mixed/augmented reality looks wild.

One of the biggest reasons I am so interested in VR is because of Microsoft Flight Simulator… which supports VR!! Imagining myself sitting in a chair with a Flight Stick Controller and Throttle Controller… and having the headset to fly a Cessna 172 Skyhawk single engine plane after smoking some herb… just cruising at high altitude in the cockpit while listening to some tunes. It could bring countless hours of enjoyment.

Here’s someone else that had the same idea… except he’s probably not high

My biggest concern before even considering VR was how comfortable the headset would be worn over my glasses… but then I found out that you could buy actual prescription lenses for the Quest 3 Headset… so I did…

The prescription lenses were only $50 and then I bought something called a “Link Cable” to go from the Headset to my super souped up PC…

So I have the lenses and the link cable… and I bought Microsoft Flight Simulator. Now all I need is the actual Quest 3 Headset itself. Microsoft paused development of their Flight Simulator product after 9/11 and the whole Twin Towers attack… but now they’re back to it… and technology has caught up to the point that the actual graphical performance is realistic. It’s incredible really.

I’m definitely interested in knowing what others think about VR in general and if there’s any other VR users out there yet here on Overgrow. The potential for virtual meetups and gameplay is cool IMO. I plan on getting the 512GB Quest 3 when I actually pull the trigger. If Valve had a successor to their Index headset I might have went that route. I do however like the idea of owning a piece or hardware made by Occulus even though Occulus is now technically Meta.

Okay end rant. Let me know what some of you guys think about VR and of your experiences.

I bought my daughter the occulus for christmas a few years back. Me, her and her sister all get disoriented and headaches from playing it.

VR is so amazing that flat panel games are almost a joke. ON mine (quest 2), I use what called PCVR. I use a separate PC to power the graphics. This greatly amplifies the power of the unit and it’s just UNREAL the gaming experience you end up with.

I choose to reject reality and substitute it with my own😉

Funny this thread popped up. A guy at work was asking if we were going to get some VR action at home since me and my lady tried out a friend’s and had a good time but for me I won’t want VR until we are fully immersed with feelin and senses included haha.

Hope I see that in my lifetime.

Until then PC and Counter Strike 2 are good enough for me. lol

Yes!! This! I spent $5K on a gaming PC a couple years ago and it is insanely powerful. The only thing I would upgrade and possibly might would be the GPU… right now I’m using an Asus overclocked RTX 2080Ti video card… and I’ve been eyeballing the new Radeon 7900 XTX cards or contemplating getting a RTX 4080… but I gotta see how the PCVR stuff plays out on my current card first.

In my PC I went for all Sabrent PCIe Gen 4 NVME M.2 drives with a 7,000/6,850 MB/s Seq. Read/Write time… and that’s my main drive that holds my O/S and my apps/games… no hard drives and no slower SATA SSD drives… all M.2 super lightning fast storage.

I did buy the optical link cable to play PCVR but I heard with Quest 3 the airlink is so good that PCVR wirelessly is a real possibility with a higher end WiFi 6 router… so that’s probably next. I’ve been checking out this one here.

I also really like the thought of VR Poker. Sitting down at the desk and playing poker with real people but in VR. I think VR Poker and Casino game play could be a blast.

Exactly!! I can’t get ripped and fly a plane in real life but this could be the next best thing. I’ve played around with Microsoft Flight Simulator a little so far and it’s no more difficult than learning the cockpit instruments and some practice. You ever hear those stories about how there’s a plane mid flight and the pilot slumps over dead in his chair and then someone on board has to take over and land the plane and become a hero?? I can’t even imagine being in that scenario… but Flight Simulator let’s you play out that scene… going in blind its difficult but the built in tutorial is actually really good when it’s enabled.

It always does.

I picked up a Quest 2 a year back or so and after the initial novelty (and dizziness) its been relegated to the latest porn machine (which it’s amazing for). I want to play Fallout VR on it but my PC is just barely capable of running it on lower settings so I haven’t bothered yet.

With any luck I’ll have the Quest 3 in my hands by the weekend… hopefully tomorrow night.

After sales tax the Quest 3 512GB model will be $700… the Lenses and Optical cable were another $75 and I ordered a more “pro” type strap. On reddit and everywhere I’ve read about the Quest 3, the biggest complaint was battery life. I keep hearing other folks mention this product called the BOBOVR M3 Pro Battery Strap. I hear about it again and again… the BOBOVR M3 is so comfortable they said… Double the battery they said… so I bought it. Now this brings the total up to $825 thus far. Here’s the BOBOVR M3…

So $825 is a lot of money to spend on a toy that I’ve never seen or experienced first hand but I am really hyped up about it. Thankfully my employer was able to give me some of these as an incentive type reward… and it pushes that price down considerably…

After applying these gift cards… realistically I’m only spending $425 of my own hard earned money… that’s an easier pill to swallow. I think I’ll be picking up the Quest 3 tomorrow night after work.

I used to have google cardboard. I liked to navigate google maps streetview in VR. The problem with these things is that it is hard to get them setup perfectly without causing discomfort to the user. I think the Apple one is going to be good because of all the cameras and sensors and in some years it should come down drastically in price. Theres also the PSVR2 which I havent tried yet.

It is also important to note that use of these VR devices can reprogram your brains natural responses to the environment as it is reprogramming to fit the virtual world.

Also something to think about is Meta’s monetization model. I’d trust apple over Meta anyday. With apple they dont need to sell your information including but not limited to how fast your rapid eye movements register a product based on their new design etc. It gets weird. Apple gets their $$ upfront. Meta gets it now and later.

Thats awesome! What a steal! I’m sure you’ll love it within the first few minutes. My fiance has glasses and it’s no issue at all on the OQ2. Both of my daughters have an oculus quest 2 and they are on them constantly. We have them synced to our tvs and tablets so we can see what they see when they want us to watch them play.
I really like the OQ2, so I can only imagine the newer model will be even better. Definitely very fun and even better with family and/or friends.

I just ordered the Quest 3! Picking it up tonight.

Honestly I have more of a disdain for Apple than I do for Meta… I will never own an Apple product either, regardless of how I feel about the company. I just don’t like their platform, their operating system, I don’t like their file system, their app store, or how anything on an apple device works. I’m a PC/Android user. I grew up using MS-Dos and have done a lot of PC builds and upgrades myself over the years.

Apple seems to be that company that most non techy people flock to whenever they release something new and shiny like the latest IPhone… its usually a year behind in specifications and features compared to the Samsung Galaxy Flagship (my preference).

Ultimately I think Valve or Samsung will have the better VR Headsets in the future but to me the Quest 3 is just a starting point to get into VR… definitely not a permanent solution by any means. For $650 I could buy a new one of these every year if I had to… but realistically if I get 2 or 3 years out of it… that’ll be pretty good.
