What are you watching? (TV & Movies)

Great movie. It also inspired my proudest porn title ever - Oh Brother Shall Part Thou

One of these I’ve seen had a women’s version where one girl was in a hottub while at least 15 others were paddling the pink canoe causing torrential “rain” everywhere… while it could have been interesting at minimum, it turned out to be a little more than upsetting because the director of the “film” had them be all fake angry about it so it in turn became a cumedy.

Last night was opening night of the Noir City Film Festival at the Lakeside Theater in Oakland. That’s Gordon Pratt at the mighty Wurlitzer after they (he and Wurlitzer) had risen through the floor! He played last year too. Old school movie palace! The house was totally sold out.

Oh, and all of the movies this year were released in 1948, making this their 75th anniversaries.

This is the ceiling medallion from our seats, nearly dead center in the theater.

This series is the left side of the theater, back to front.

Last night’s double bill was killer (no pun intended but they are all going to be killers! HA!). “Key Largo” was the opener. It’s a classic that I’ve seen it maybe 10 times, but this was the first time on the big screen. It was SO awesome! And, of course, they show only the best prints available.

Second movie was also an “A,” “The Lady from Shanghai” (Rita Hayworth and her then husband Orson Wells stared), a movie I wasn’t as familiar with as Key Largo. Shot in 1946, it was cut down for release from 155 minutes to 87 minutes in 1948. It was confusing as shit and even more fun!

Today’s double bill is “Larceny”," an A starring John Payne, Joan Caulfield, Dan Duryea and Shelley Winters, then “The Spiritualist a.k.a. The Amazing Mr. X,” Turhan Bey, Lynn Bari and Cathy O’Donnell. Definitely a B, but neither of us believe we’ve seen it. Very exciting!

Last night’s double bill was so awesome!

It opened with Naked City, the first movie ever to be shot entirely on location in a large city. I’ve seen it multiple times, but never on the big screen with an audience and an absolutely premium print! It was so clear and crisp! When Eddie, the emcee and host, asked by a show of hands who had never seen the movie before, over half the audience responded. I envied them so much that this should be their introduction to this fabulous movie! Mrs. mota thought she had seen it but hadn’t. Oh, what lucky ducks those people were!

Next up was Cry of the City, a movie I don’t believe I’d never seen. Apparently it has been shown on TV multiple times (probably not very recently), but a 35mm print was basically unavailable although they were know to exist in the vault. Because Eddie knew a guy who had been the archivist for whatever studio currently owns the rights, and that guy knew the current archivist, we got to see this movie which hadn’t been seen on the big screen since before I was born. That would have been 1950. So fucking great!

Victor Mature was such a weird looking guy. Difficult to mistake for another actor.

Okay, tonight’s double bill is…

That poster above makes me want to scream “Don’t knock on that door, Ray! Don’t knock!” rofl

I’m really excited to get to see Don Ameche, an actor I like a lot, in an old movie I don’t believe I’ve seen. He’s been in some fine relatively modern movies that I can see basically whenever I want, but these old gems… I’m also blown away that Robert (Bob) Cummings was ever in a noir. Really interested to see his moves. ROFLMAO I only know him as a comedic actor.

Have I mentioned I love film noir?! No comic book movies here!

We’ve taken a break for a couple of days, but are going to return tonight. We’ve seen all the movies of the past two days. Here’s the lineup for tonight and tomorrow night. Someone will need to post in this thread for me to be able finish up. This is my third post.

They’ve all been crazy good!

The performances, the pacing, the way they manage to honor the game; I really didn’t know what to expect either, but now I’m jonesin’ for the next episode!

Didn’t know it was based on a game. Not being familiar with the game shouldn’t hinder one’s enjoyment of the show, should it? Thanks!

An accurate depiction of my city as well

No it should actually be better because you won’t see the the things that differ from the game. They changed something about how the zombies infect and also sense things that is different than the game. The change is interesting but you won’t be bogged down with the debate of whether they should be changing anything. Also you won’t have the first 2 minutes of wondering why they randomly decided to change the ethnicity of the main character and his family from the game. Thankfully that fades fast because the guy playing Joel is really good in the role.

Did you know the Grimm brothers were folklorists and early linguists? They figured out how languages change over time, language being limited to the spoken thing. It has become known as Grimm’s law.
