1973 Durban sativa (poison) "The Green Pheno"- a collective history of a South African sativa

Wow, guess the cltv have the commercial angle covered. Only 2 or 3 long ‘Sham-Wow’ segments.
Then there is the inaccuracy of ‘durban poison’ which could be Transkei, Lestotho, Ciskei, and god knows what else. But from an indica devotee guess this is as far as he gets.

Something to consider when pondering ‘durban poison’. The guy that brough some seed from South Africa never specifies how many pounds of seed he brought back. I suspect it wasn’t pounds. And from a very limited quantity of seeds he proclaims “there are 2 phenos”.

Sorry, but that is the height of arrogance to declare for an entire continent that you found the 2 phenos. Actually we know that traveling through Durban in the 60’s-70’s there were Transkei, Lesothto, Ciskei, and even Malawi coming in and exported. Out of all those strains Mr. Arrogance declares 2 phenos?

Gimme a break. Eso es cacagada in su sombrero.

Ed Rosenthal got the seeds in Amsterdam, not South-Africa.

The buds look great but it seems the plants have been hybridized to some degree, they look way too frosty all over the leaves for a true African. Those traits are common from archetype NLD x BLD hybrids, with hashplant traits on the flowers and a more contained structure. More popcorn style buds than proper wispy spears like one would expect.

What’s the story behind this Hippie Cannabis Genetics company?? I’d say the 1973 is just a marketing gimmick that was never cared to be verified as it often happens, like Tropical Seed Co used to do with their 70s Durban that was in fact from early 2000s and sourced via AfricanHerbman from Icmag. Original Durban grow by Aeros from TSCo.:

Unfortunately both AfricanHerbman’s Durban and Swazis were also from more modern stock, most plants finished around 12 weeks from what Aeros mentioned. I believe South Africa always has been one of the toughest parts in Africa to find intact genetics due to being also the main exporter from all the African continent since decades ago.

This Durban Poison from the early stocks of Afropips looked quite authentic to me and had a closer structure to what one should expect from oldschool stock, a proof that more “sativa” looking plants do existed not a very long time ago:

This early stock on the other hand contrasts with the latest stock Afropips sold, that looked totally different (find Dave Coulier’s grows on Icmag for a reference). Unfortunately finding a true Durban Poison type nowadays would be probably as hard as finding the old Jamaican Bob Marley used to smoke back then.

I agree as being one of the testers involved with Dave’s test grows on his repro, my generic holland sourced Durban had a much more sativa look and high, but don’t feel it was even close to the early stock photos you’ve pictured… Thoughts were it was mixed with Skunk1 and Dave’s with Paki Chitral… Trust me when I started the Afropips beans I was praying for those old school looks
