which soil mixture contains which plants? Are the ones with holes in the same kind of mix? Or some other combo.
I’ll have to double check that and get back to you
Day 19 Veg - Tuesday
It’s starting to get a hair crowded in there…
Not too much to report for now, hard to tell if there are more noticeably different/more holes from bugs, could very well be mitigated:
Everything is looking great!
How much headspace do you have in this box? What is the distance between the top of your plants and your light? I ask because it is probably time for you to top if you plan to and to start considering at what canopy height to flower at.
I don’t see any divots in the new growth on any of the plants. Hard to check the variegated one, it’s a ways back from the camera.
I’ll have to measure officially and get back to you for some specifics, but I can tell you this, I’m pretty sure from floor of box to ceiling it is either 32” or 34” I forget exactly.
The lights I have been moving a bit. I adjusted them higher and then increased the intensity to get a lil more heat.
I think if I remember correctly, I might be close to 300 (either ppfd or ?micro mules/sec or whatever it is)…
I have been thinking about topping as well.
I will prob move out the other plants and am not sure exactly how if any way I should train if you have any suggestions.
I was thinking maybe they should be kept where they don’t get too much wider than their containers?
I also don’t know if I should increase or decrease the light or leave them as be, they do seem to be praying fairly well.
Just as an FYI, I would like to take cuttings for some potential bonsai mothers… I prob would only keep one of each strain at the most if I do.
@JoeCrowe what do you mean by divots? Like possible bug bites?
I can so some more close ups of any/all.
If you get kidney stones, careful on eating that purslane. Its loaded with oxalic acid, thats what gives it that wonderfully bright flavor.
I’m a chef who gets kidney stones, trust me on this one.
Very interesting, if you’ve never had kidney stones does it increase your chance, or does it just make it worse if you get them (for other reasons)?
I heard it’s supposed to be one of the most nutritious greens?
Also was thinking about making a FPJ with it if you know anything about that?
I also thought I read it has good omegas and am hoping/wondering if that might be of benefit to plants kind of like Fermented Fish Aminos in part (besides the amino aspect of the FFA)?
I would love to have some close ups of the new growth at the top of each plant. It seemed like the missing chunks of plant started out there. Plants are looking great by the way, not stressed out.
It just helps build them quicker if your prone to them.
Yes, its super nutritious and grows freaking everywhere! Its loaded with minerals and flavor, have you tried a leaf yet?
Makes sense to use as a til in cover crop, it is a bioacumulator
You are either going to need to start training heavy, or flower them soon. I dont see you being able to get any taller than say 10 inches. You figure with a 10 inch tall plant in a 6 inch tall pot, will stretch another 8-10 inches or more. If they only double in height in the stretch, that leaves you with 26 inches from the floor to the top of the plant. Thats 6-8 inches from the light to the tops if the light is mounted flush with the ceiling. Even less if it is hanging.
Either start training or getting ready to flip them, or you will easily outgrow your space rather quickly
Ceiling height is 33”, let’s say I can get the bottom of the lights to 30”.
So tallest plant right now is 12” from floor.
I am def down to flower soon, that’s sort of what I wanted to do anyway…
Want to know how many days you think I have before I have to flip and/or what if any training I can do to save some time as I would like to build a flower box but am a lil caught up with stuff right now.
Worst case scenario, I take cuttings and thrown theses ladies outside.
*actually, worst case scenario, I do that, cuttings don’t take and plants don’t hardened off right or die some other way outside lol
Id personally top them now, that would give you about 10 days until you needed to flip. Expect them to at least double in height.
If I top aren’t they going to go even more lateral? Would that not also create issues?
Can I do a regular top and also top side branches? Then maybe lower light intensity so they stretch for a sec, then raise intensity back up? lol
They will grow like a candelabra. Think 6 or more top buds instead of a single cola. I feel its a more efficient use of lighting because your more spread out.
Yeah you can top side branches too, they will just split into 2 branches at the point you top.
I dont know about switching intensities, that seems like any easy way to throw things off.
Here are 6 plants I topped, see how its an even canopy of tops instead of 6 spaced out colas?
So I’m def a lil bit unsure as to what would be my best strategy here…
I know a typical top is basically off the main trunk, but also, I feel like I’ve heard some people will take cutting of lower side branches and not touch the top because they want to see how it looks (for the cutting as a mom/breeding?)… mix that all into the height and width issues here lol
Anyway, if I was to simply perform a regular old top, would it be right above 3 (I know not to cut the lil side/corner shoots, only trunk, I may be a noob but I’d like to think I’m at least slightly above 101, maybe 101.1 )…
I feel like 3 is what most say, and it also seems like maybe there is enough growth above that for a cutting?
I was also thinking maybe FIM at 6? This won’t slow it down tho correct? If that’s the case I wouldn’t benefit from a growth slow down for a min to give me time… so maybe not best idea…
Maybe I wait til Saturday to take a cutting (when I’m getting a lil kelp meal; thinking tiny bit of kelp meal, aloe, and OHN for the cuttings), then after a bit of time, maybe top side branches? Or should they be done at the same time?
Sorry if I’m abusing my questioning
No worries, the only bad question is one unasked.
How I top is snip entirely at 6, at 1 and 2 I would remove the suckered branches but leave the leaves (if you want to clone your plant leave these branches and take them as your clones later). This will give you 2 branches each coming out at 3, 4 and 5. Train these out so you have 6 branches coming out evenly from your main stalk and generally 2 in the middle from where you topped the plant. It will give you a nice even canopy that you can keep trained to the same area as your pot.
When you top it stops growing up and all the lateral branches grow longer until they curve up and become equal to the center. I like to feed some kelp during this time, since it helps remove apical dominance, making all the branches more uniform.
Ok, so regardless, I should prob cleanup the Red, right?
And the Yellow is what you said to either cut or leave for later for clones?
And leave the Blue no matter what?
Yeah, close enough for government work lol. Eventually the blue will die off on its own, but you got it man.
Day 21 Veg - Thursday
Here’s a pic from earlier in the day:
Tonight topped all of the plants except I FIMed the UK just to try it.
I also made up a batch of KNF maintenance solution using comfrey FPJ, and also threw in a ml of Organics Alive FPF and FPT… read it’s good for them to have some nutrients when getting topped so hopefully that will help a lil, I don’t think it was too concentrated so I doubt there will be any burn. I mainly did some foliar with it and then just sprayed the top of the soil/mulch as they seem to be getting a nice consistent moisture from the cap mat.
I think after some time when they are recovered, I might top some or all of the side branches of nodes 3-5, lollipop the first node (3 leaf set; already cleaned the single leaf node), and take 2 cuttings from the 2nd nodes… sort of a random plan I came up with somewhat based on @anon93244739 ‘a”s advice, but still open to more tips from anyone.
