A Small Grow on the Big Island

Here’s a bit of fun and mystery of genetics for y’all

This is one of seeds that were germinated for this grow, I took a few shots of the leaf structure and a bud site. All of the seeds were WidowMaker but this one is obviously an outlier. Some of the fans have 3 leaves some 4 and a few 5, the entire plant seems stunted even the bud structure and length of the pistils, and it matured faster than all the rest. I am certainly interested in your thoughts…

Might be defective genetics as you say, I thought about an accidental revegging but normally they pull single blade leaves with smooth edges … icon_e_confused|nullxnull

These are autos, and they all were set under the same lighting start to where they are today, what I am interested to see if the effect will be different.

Then revegging is discarded, checking the net it says it’s a possible response to stress or just genetics … beer2|nullxnull

Aloha @TARpits,

Here’s a nice tutorial on final trim/manicure plans for flowering by Master Grower @Papalag.

Your plants are too close to harvest for this, but it’s worth bookmarking for future reference. Paps knows whereof he Speaks!

So good day OverGrow, the grow is now into week 11 and the G-log will finally be near real time.

I have another group of 4 seedlings started, feminized autos, more information will be coming on another G-log. Two of the current grow were topped, one at 4th node and the other at the 5th. I need some input as to what I should do with the next 4, to top or not to top. . I would like to top them all the same for the next grow.
Anyone want to offer their thoughts?

#1 is not topped.

#2 4th node using PPP plan via @BU2B
This plant is nearly as tall as the un-topped. A bit spindly but the bud sites seem to all be in the sun.

#4 5th node via @LoveDaAutos
I like the look of this plant it is a foot shorter than the other 2 plants, it is compact in circumference, almost all the tops of the buds are the same height and the buds seem to be fuller and more mature.

I personally like #2 and #3 but sometimes I don’t top autos. I like to top my autos, tie down and spread the branches which does two things. I grow autos in a not so tall tent so have to keep them shorter which this does. It also spreads out the branches allong much better light penetration enabling the colas to swell larger and you will see an increase in trichrome production. I think you did a great job with this group of plants.

I appreciate the words of wisdom. I like the topped plants and did work at spreading them out this grow but didn’t want to be too aggressive being my first go at this.
My goal for the next grow is to pick my poison and keep them all the same, it helps to have the all the same height.
With the help of @GrouchyOldMan it was decided that we would look at minimizing the possibility of pestilence and disease by created some space in the plant structure. So far it has been a success, it has been helpful to have “one n done” spray and Dr. Zymes for pests and I totally believe the use of elemental sulfur early on has kept powdery white mildew from getting in the way.
Thank you the encouragement about the grow so far, I feel a whole grip of gratitude for all the help I have received here.

The latest. Still working on a better set up for close up. The buds are closing ranks and thickening up.

Latest close ups from today.
Note what looks like a dead mosquito on the bud. Must have gotten overwhelmed.

Good day OG. Been a few days of radio silence on my part. Buds are filling in and harvest is upon me. I have already procured “bovida packs” and mini hygrometers for 32oz mason jars, I have a dark and humidity controlled drying room with a small fan waiting for harvest time.
Speaking of that I have been reading a lot of threads about this and have many questions.
As for harvest and curing…
Cut the whole plant and hang?
To wash or not to wash?
Cut individual buds and dry on a rack?
Cut long branches and hang them?
Keep drying room at 60% RH?
Right now my room is sealed and averages 72º depending upon the weather. If it needs to have fresh air I would need to install some fine bug screen but that would negate the dehumidifier.

How many ways to ‘skin a cat’?..

It took me years before I saw the merits of the humidity packs and hygrometers in the jars… I’ll chalk it up to slow/stubborn…

I cut and lightly trim branches and hang them (binder clips & coat hangers)
if I’m growing indoors I don’t bother washing…
My trimming style is more ‘rustic’ than bag appeal…

Usually something like 5 days and they are ready(ish) for jarring. That’s when I cut the buds off the branches.

Typically I use the basement shower for this as the temps are about 65F and RH is easily controllable but I have also considered a U Haul ‘wardrobe box’ as well…

As of late, I flash freeze 50% of the plants and only jar the nicest buds for cured flower. The frozen stuff will be for bubble hash.

I don’t think you need fresh air other than to control the RH but I do have a small USB fan just to ‘stir the air’. I suspect if you do not, you might get localized areas where the RH gets higher than 70% (PM etc).

Of course, if you are ‘Daddy Warbucks’ rich you just spring for the fancy cure cabinets and ‘call it a day’…

Cheers

You are nearing the finish line @TARpits, congratulations.

I had a few minutes and thought I’d drop some pics and comments for your harvest consideration.

First off, @gpaw is right, everybody finds their way to a routine that works. Here’s a couple notes on my method and gear.

Let’s talk tools
I use these trays to dry trimmed bud. They’re from the fruit dehydrator I used for apples. I don’t suggest these for dry trim colas, it is miserable to try and pry huge dried fan leaves away from the buds. Anyways, any kind of tray works well AFTER they have been wet trimmed. If you want to dry trim stick to hanging your branches instead.

Here’s the Trim Bin I use. Simple, cheap functional and inexpensive. I still use the cheezy trimmers they sent me with the tray. LoL That vacuseal in the background can pull a strong vac right on a mason jar for long term storage.

The white handle with those strange orange bristles is a CannaBrush, a trim tool that can save hours of labor in some drying situations. Fiskar trimmers are da kine! The pile is a rough trim of sugar leaf from Orange Grove. I’ll bash it around a bit over the tray and have a small pile of yellow kief that will go straight into my pipe for a 1st Toke Test. Payday!

Here’s the array of Trim Tools. Far left is a graduated cylinder filled with iso alcohol. You can dunk your shears in this to dissolve the “trim grease.” The Shears Cup has tools for everything from the main stalk to the final manicure.

And then, there’s the near-harvest trichome porn we all want to see… Here’s mine, show us yours!
Orange Grove, the first hint of Amber Trichs (thx @JustSumTomatoes!)

Frankenstein’s Daughter is a fecund female soon to be dusted with incestuous pollen: BX4!

Combine all the above with a final dried-harvest weigh-in and a smoke report and you’ll have ended this story in a burst of glory.

Nice work man, I like the tool shed too! I must have a dozen of those Fiskars trimmers. I like to just switch them out as needed and clean them with isopropyl at the end.

Nice to hear from you Brother. I grew out two female OG seeds this winter and am making plans for some sleepy time tincture meds!. The first session with Orange Grove Kief has me laid out flat!
Best regards,

I have no worries about RH as I have a controlled room, my problem could be the heat. The room is insulated but has the classic corrugated steel roof so common in Hawai’i. My concern is it being too warm. I have no aircon and am at the mercy of Hilo area weather. Could be cloudy for the cycle or could be sunny. I do have guest room that is perfect, alas we have guests arriving and as much as I love the scent of fresh canna somehow don’t think they would want everything they brought to be that fragrant  Gotta say that uhaul wardrobe box in the guest room next time is a winner, that room stays cool and the RH is easy but I was worried about it not being dark.

The input is appreciated
