Any hunters on the forum?

Thanks for trying man. I don’t think you’re being political. I do believe that I’m being an opinionated, middle aged, jerkwad.

We all gotta be good at something.

Youth season opened up here today. The pictures of gorgeous deer they were showing on the news got my blood pumping a bit. The cold weather always gets me a bit excited as well.

you too. I had buddies who loved their time in korea and ones who hated it. always sounded alright to me. i love Korean food but would have been in hell not being able to hunt. was there at least somewhere to wet a line?

Well this year I hope to get out for some more small game. This was a few years back, yes we mostly harvest our squirrels and hares with shotguns.

I hope to get my 17hmr our for some action this year, I haven’t yet since I put it in a new stock and scope 3 years ago. It’ll be a challenge, head shots only hence the zombie green

I used to use a 22 mag with hollow points way overkill same as the 17hmr.
Shot my share with shotguns also.

I use a 70 year old Montgomery ward .22 w iron sights that shoots high and right. Gives those tree rats a sporting chance, and makes head shots a bit about luck as well!

If I was after spikes and button bucks, I’d have a dead deer by now. Covered up this morning and yesterday evening but not a single mature buck, and no does presented me w any clear shots. Back in a stand again tonight!

I don’t even own a .22 any more. If I want to, I also have a gamo whisper air rifle, need to get shotgun close though, and still need to pick head shots, but at least I can shoot up into a tree without worrying too much.

my sons in the Marines and he can’t stand his peers. says they all bitch n’ moan over everything. he works part time as a fleet mechanic with a bunch of 50-60 yr old hispanic guys. says he gets along with them a lot better. thats from my father watching him and his sister when we were working. Dad was tough on them but instilled good work ethics.

i have a gamo bone collector 1200fps pellet gun. i find it isn’t very accurate. iff your worried about neighbors get a bolt .22 and use .22short ammo. makes about the same sound as a pellet gun.
and much more accurate.

I like the WMR for snowshoe hares. Lets me reach out further and carries a lot more punch than a .22LR.

Just one rule. Head/neck shots only!

The kid didn’t just do something stupid. He broke the law, and so did his father.

To hunt with a firearm, hunters under 18 years of age
must be accompanied by a parent, a legal guardian or by a person 18
years of age or older who has the written permission of the parent or
legal guardian.

If the law had been followed, this wouldn’t have happened because the father would most likely have had the sense to slow the kid down and verify the target. The kid obviously had unrestricted access to the rifle, which means the father broke one or more safe storage laws.

It will be inreresting to see how it proceeds, law wise… the guy says he’s forgiven them. But the law is the law

Knowing what he did, and the associated guilt, might be enough punishment for the kid - but like you say, the law is the law.

Usually if the law is brought in its in their hands

not when i was there. it was one hell of a culture shock for a rurally raised 18 yr old! was manning a radio relay site on a mountain during a team spirit exercise. i noticed going up the mountain there were wild pheasant everywhere. me and another guy had 12 hr shifts on the radio. on my off time, i decided i wanted a try at those birds. they weren’t being hunted so they would just hunker near some brush. i made a 10ft forked spear out of a willow and managed to get 3. our 1st sgt. came up to check on us. i was cooking pheasant on the diesel powered stove, in our mess kit using the gravy packet and salt , pepper from our mres. i invited him to join us and he sat down and ate with us. he was from A.L so it was cool with him.

were you north? I was in the south east on the border of Pakistan. I saw birds but not much in the way of anything worth hunting. we got to kill a few goats and eat them though but I didn’t get to hunt them, just buy them from a dude.
