I agree that bio-char isn’t a straight up gimmick, however I do think the way it’s marketed in the cannabis scene is dishonest, overblown and predatory which is the norm in that industry. I’ve used a few various bio-chars in potting soils and worm bins in the past and at best noticed no measurable difference and at worst I ran into problems like you’re experiencing now. Didn’t seem worth it for me in a self-made “high quality” potting soil and haven’t really seen any reputable source claim that bio-char is efficacious in such a situation.

Also not all bio-char is equal. The materials used as well as the temperatures are two obvious and major factors at play in addition to particle size and ph. Most of the benefits seems to be in the domain of soil restoration/rejuvenation and improving poor acidic soils (real soils, not soil-less potting mixes). For potting soils it seems like a waste at best to me, but if you’re going to incorporate it your mixes cycling it first in a worm bin or compost pile may help (in addition to “charging” it). Also using less as you mentioned for sure.

Navigating Build-A-Soil’s website has a similar aura and feel to it as the healing crystals, homeopathy and MLM stuff to me…

Agree with this as well, especially if you have some soil on hand without the bio-char and maybe lower on fertility too.

Edit saw they are fried now

Ah, that makes more sense. I tend to change things or tweak things when I get bored too. Always very tempting to try to make things better, when I know good and well that things work in well in the first place.

Yeah, I’m actually curious too, I’m going to reach out to them and see what they say.

Yeah was stoked to see that one grown out again.

Yeah, I think it has to be burned in the correct manner as well to make it bio-char right? It’s not like it’s just burned up sticks, or organic matter that you threw on a fire. I think you have to burn it with low oxygen. I also don’t believe it’s a gimmick, but like you, I’ve not really noticed any great benefits either. I didn’t charge my last batch that I added to my soil, and later found out that it can actually leach/pull useful stuff from your soil mix for a couple of cycles if not charged. I recently brewed up a compost tea, heavy on the Neptune’s Fish and Seaweed fertilizer and fresh castings and then poured that into the biochar and let sit for a few weeks, for this latest batch of soil in my SIPs. I only threw a couple cup fulls in the mix, I may throw a bunch through the worm bin as well, seems like a better/easier way to implement it.

But yeah, fuck that Biochar mix you made up, haha. You can maybe cut it half and half or add bits here and there with other amendments for topdressing or something like that, if you truly don’t want to toss it all.

Yeah, man, believe me, I do not just read one thing and go,”Okay! That’s what I’m gonna do now!” haha. I research the fuck out of everything before I use it, grow it, smoke it, shoot it in my veins (just kidding, I hate needles).

Yeah, I mean, I had that bin sitting there for months, getting excess compost teas dumped in there every now and then and shit. I figured it musta been good to go by now.

I FUCKED UP, OKAY?!?!?

Haha, just kidding. But yeah, I’m well aware of everything biochar, read plenty about it. I actually don’t typically read about things like that in regards to cannabis specifically; usually I just read about stuff in a general sorta way. I definitely didn’t do my “biochar reading” from any weed-related websites or whatever. I mean, maybe a little bit, but I usually read about stuff like that from sources more reliable than fucking BAS or whatever.

Yeah, that’s a thing, for sure. I think that dude I got my char from was full of shit. Which kind of irritates me, just because I went out there and spent like four fucking hours with him and I didn’t necessarily get a “this guy’s full of shit” vibe from him. And I’m real good about picking up on that kinda stuff. I trust my instincts over everything.

But, like I said, I FUCKED UP haha…

It looks like overwatering to me.

Drunk, probably haha.

Feed lot lips and assholes “approved for organic production.”

Funny and a good point, but I think the stuff’s likely legit. But who knows…it’s really hard to trust anybody when money’s involved… because of exactly what syzygy said.

This seems pretty much the norm for everything these days. When I’m around TV, I’m shocked at how dishonest the ads ALL are.

But, to your other point, less is more.

You didn’t notice the strong smell of Round Up when you bought it haha? Jokes on you!

Haha ya I wasn’t trying to imply that you get your info from the retailers. More just stating my disgust for the people who started off mocking people for using / pushing magic potions who are now doing the same thing now with their own potions. I went to their site to see if there was any info on the bio-char they sell out of curiosity and that was the source of that semi-random comment. Sucks to hear about your seedlings but at least you have a whole bunch of other interesting seeds to explore still.

It’s definitely not overwatering. I only water those little pots with two or, at the most, three tablespoons of water every-other day. I know how to fucking water haha.

Good guess haha, but I was actually sober as a judge during the “fucking with my soil” period, whenever that was. Last April, I think. I had to drive out to Thousand Oaks and then Camarillo to get the biochar and there’s no way I’d drive all the way out there drunk. I don’t really leave the house at all when I’m drinking. Honestly, being sober was probably what motivated me to start tinkering. It’s like,”Okay, I’ve worked out, I’ve cooked breakfast… Now what?” haha.

That was the thing, though! The dude invited me out to his house and showed me around his garden (not weed plants, just his edible and ornamental crops), showed me around his warehouse. There definitely wasn’t any Round Up anywhere haha. He obviously really cared about plants and cared about the whole thing.

I dunno. I think it’s just because I added way too much biochar to the mix. Who fucking knows?

Psssshhhhh… My girl’s watching that show House of the Dragon right now, so this seems as good a time as any to write a couple smoke reports. I dunno what it is, but I just cannot get into that shit. Game of Thrones? Gimme a break… I just heard one of the characters in that Dragon show scream (in their stupid British accent),“LAUGHING WITH YOUR WHORES AND YOUR LICKSPITTLE!!!”

Please… haha. “Lickspittle”? What does that even mean? Let’s everybody just relax.

Anyway, Dread Bread #1.

Looks:

Same nug, different angles. I pulled that one from my first jar, which means that there are even bigger nugs waiting for me in the second, third, fourth etc jars. The one in the pics weighs exactly six grams, so… Serious potential for epic yields with the Dread Bread, no doubt about it.

Smell: unbroken nugs smell exactly like mango, that sort of “earthy soft fruit” kinda smell. Once they’re broken up, though, there’s a much more noticeable “tangerine” smell, which I have to believe is coming from the OMG-side of things. One of my Smart Moves smelled the same way. I like it, smells really good.

Taste: Eh. Like I mentioned on the Bodhi thread the other day, I really think the too-hot drying conditions affected this one (although the #2 Imperial Majesty tastes really fucking good, so I dunno). It’s mostly just a “dry” sorta flavor, kind of like champagne, but without the bubbly, effervescent quality, and a lightly-fruity exhale. It doesn’t taste bad at all, but considering how good the flowers smell, it’s kind of a letdown. Maybe it’ll taste better the longer it cures…

High: I like this one. There’s not really any one standout aspect to it, but it’s good weed. It does keep me awake, but it’s not like a rushy, racy, speedy kind of “keeping me awake,” if that makes any sense. I usually take a nap (read: pass out haha) after lunch, but this weed prevents me from doing that. And that’s a good thing; I don’t like falling asleep in the middle of the day.

It’s a pleasant high, though. Strong enough, for sure. Two fat bong rips are plenty. It’s kind of stony, kind of mellow, kind of fun… I dunno. Like I said, there isn’t necessarily one “standout” aspect to it, but it all combines into a really nice high.

I’ll be growing it again at some point for sure, if that helps haha.

Anyway, yeah, good weed. Amazing yields, too. Both of those Dread Breads are probably the best-yielding plants I’ve grown in a while. I haven’t weighed it all and I’m not going to, but it’s obvious they were pretty epic. Worth a few grows, for sure. Maybe even more than a few. It’d probably be great breeding material, too, if you’re into that sorta thing haha…

Imperial Majesty #2 smoke report.

Looks:

That little clump of nugs weighed 3.4 grams, just to give you an idea of the density of those flowers.

Smell: unbroken flowers smell similar to the #1 plant, with that herbal/spicy sorta flavor. Broken up, though, it’s just straight-up classic OG: cologne/perfume/aftershave. Maybe a hint of spiciness, too, like a peppery spice, not necessarily faraway exotic spices or anything.

Flavor: same as the smell, which is a good thing. Extremely perfume/aftershave-ish, with a very noticeable pine element to it, as well. That’s nice. I haven’t smoked any pine-y weed in a while, I don’t think. It tastes really good. It also makes me sneeze a lot, just like the #1 IM.

High: Real fucking good. This one kind of reminds me of the Clusterfunk, actually, with more of a hybrid “up then down” type of high than the #1 IM plant. A lot of people will say “body high” when what they actually mean is “heavy”; this one has a very noticeable “body” element to it, especially on the come-up, but it’s more of an electric kinda “tingly” thing, like I just got plugged into a socket or something. But it’s not uncomfortable haha. I can feel that rush in my body, but it doesn’t get racy in my head, if that makes any sense.

After about an hour, it for sure becomes a little lethargic. After sampling this one during different times of the day, I’ve decided that it’s best for getting ready for bed, like maybe an hour-and-a-half or two hours before I actually wanna fall asleep. I mean, it’s not an “unacceptable” daytime strain, I can blaze this one during the day, but it does get a little heavy on the comedown. That could just be me, I dunno haha. I think the #1 plant is more of a functional type of high, though. But the #2 plant is really good, too. I’m glad I bought another pack of these seeds, for sure.

wow that one sounds so damn good, og’s are so good, the aftershave and pine perfume realm is the shizznitz, the nugs are 10/10, impressive, you wish you dusted a branch or took a cut i’m sure :joy:

Haha, not really. If anything, I wish I woulda taken a cut of the #1 Dread Bread; that’s been my favorite so far, but I have a lot of those seeds left. I do think the DB would be an exceptional breeding partner with, uh… something haha.

I still haven’t even tried the #2 DB, but I’m looking forward to it. I haven’t tried anything yet, actually, except both of the Imperials and that one Dread Bread. I’ve got a LOT to check out haha… Probably gonna get into Iamyou’s Blueberry cross next, I’m super-eager to check that one out. It’s been a long time since I’ve blazed anything Blueberry.

And the Purple Corinto Budder cross… And the two Diesel crosses… haha. Lots of stuff this round. Time to get serious…

I wanna send samples of my herb to you to write the reports on em, way better than I can do

For real the man needs to get hired for promotion he sells packs with his reports  one of the people that inspires me and makes me want to articulate and report my experiences better maybe one day I’ll be able to do a solid report to that level :crossed_fingers: @LegsMahoney

Nahhhhh, dude, you can do it! Haha.

Don’t you have kids? Nobody expects a parent to sit around all day and night and ponder all of the various vagaries and subtleties of specific cannabis strains haha. Or I don’t expect parents to, anyway. I’m super-glad I don’t have children, for a plethora of reasons, the least of which is that I CAN sit around and ponder the weed I’m smoking haha.

Only if the weed is good, though… Luckily, I’ve been growing some pretty great strains for the last, like, seven years haha. The only things I’ve actively disliked have been the Black Triangle, the Purple NL2 and the California Cannon from GPS. Everything else has been pretty gawddamn good…

What? I thought the Purple NL2 was one of your favorites!!:rofl:

Hell no! Like minitiger, the purple pheno’s I grew out made me depressed anytime I smoked them. Dark thoughts. I gave the rest of the beans to my in-law’s tho and they love it. 55+ crowd seems to enjoy it regardless and don’t seem to have the negative effects tiger and I both experienced. Idk what that’s about. Wife had it too and a few others in their 30s.

i will say though, my FIL just gave me some flower of a mostly green pheno he just found over the summer, and that one’s actually decent. I can smoke it without having those dark thoughts.

Ooh, that one looks pretty good. Much frostier than the super-purple plant that I grew.

I dunno if it made me “depressed,” exactly, but it did make me really, really unsure of myself every time I smoked it. And I’m nothing if not sure of myself haha. It was bordering on a sorta “paranoid” type of high and paranoia is not something I ever feel. I just assume and have accepted the fact that everybody’s watching and listening in all the time, but the Purple NL2 made me not okay with that haha! I mean, I’m not okay with that, just on principle, even when I’m sober, but yeah, man… That fucking Purple NL2… No good haha.

Something I just realized about those Imperial Majesties: they both have a “peppery” sorta smell to them, like freshly-cracked black pepper. And then I remembered that that’s actually kind of a “known” terpene or whatever, like a black pepper terpene? Have y’all heard of that? It sounds familiar to me. I wonder if that’s why both of the Imperial Majesties make me sneeze so much.

Maybe the IM’s are heavy on that particular terpene. I dunno. Kind of interesting, anyway… haha.

Had a few bags of black domina from a dispo that tasted and smelled just like black pepper super interesting terp for sure @minitiger
