I forgot to note above that when I went to take these pics, I discovered that the pots were super light, almost dry. The plants were a bit droopy as a result, whereas yesterday they were praying happily.
I guess that means they’ve adjusted to being transplanted and are now drinking enough to be ready for two feedings a day. Lots of roots showing out of the bottom and under the Floraflex covers.
Really loving this plant so far. I vacillate between hoping it’s a female, and hoping it’s a male. I love it either way. I sure hope it’s a female, I’m gonna make so many seeds! Or actually, a male could be used to pollinate so many plants… One of those, for sure. Just not both, please
After I took photos yesterday I went through and did a bunch of selective pruning, cleaning up the lowers and any inside branches, etc.
I just spent a few minutes looking over the plants just now, and they are looking pretty good in my opinion. They seem to have taken a liking to their new haircuts, and have all responded well. To be honest, I had kind of hoped that might slow them down for a couple of days, but they all threw out a bunch of new growth instead. Small tent grower problems, I guess
@Baudelaire can you give me a rough estimate on how much the C99 Mix plants stretch on average? I ask because I usually assume they’ll end up at 3x the size they are at flip if I don’t know the strain, and if that’s true of these then I might have to flip them a bit sooner than I was planning due to my short vertical limits. They are all growing quickly, and as much as they seem to want to spread out and get wide, they are also growing vertically at a pretty good clip, lol.
Well, the mixes are the veritable “box of chocolates” - you never know what you’re going to get.
You’ve got everything from 10-11 week sat-dom ESB and Durban-Thai crosses to 7-8 week GD and Princess 88 crosses (GD is 50% C99). Stretch is more or less proportional to maturation period. Given that you’d selected from your seeds the more indica-dom individuals (bigger, darker seeds - the lighter smaller seeds come from the DTHF and ESB crosses) I’d expect medium stretch and an 8 week or so maturation. Maybe 2x . IF any DTHF or ESB made your cut, expect 3x. -b420
That is an excellent answer, and makes intuitive sense. Thank you for the response
The height and morphology of the remaining FDM plants is more alike than not, so that would also make it seem unlikely that there are any DTHF or ESB dominant plants in this run. Since I would very much like to see those expressions as well, I am going to have to run the rest of the seeds soon to see if I can find them, it would seem
I’ve been feeding all of the plants Megacrop at 1.2 EC until now. From the day that I watered in the seeds until their second feeding yesterday I’ve been feeding them at the same EC I have been feeding everything else I run for the past few years.
Looking the plants over carefully this morning, I came to the conclusion that they might appreciate a stronger feed. They’re apparently doing well enough, and obviously growing quickly, but they just don’t look as happy as I think they could look.
I’m using the new Megacrop 2.0 formulation on this run, whereas previously I was using the original formula for everything, and before that it was Jacks 3-2-1. I don’t know if the new formula should be mixed stronger than I used to mix the original, or if I’m just seeing some strain-specific feeding requirements that are different than what I’m used to. That’s the problem with changing too many things at once; it leaves you with too many potentially confounding variables.
In light of that, I’ve decided that I’m going to experiment with feed strength a bit. I just gave them all a dose at 1.6 EC for the first time, and I’ll be observing them closely over the next few days to see if it needs to be adjusted up or down from there.
So far on the Megacrop 2.0 I seem to be at a really light feed myself. Until my plants say different, I’m still at 2 grams a gallon which was dosage for seedlings. They are in flower already… Who knew??
Cannabis is such an amazing plant, sometimes it blows my mind when I think of the myriad different ways that it can be grown successfully. I used to grow in three to five gallon smart pots with organic soil and watered with blumats, and the plants were amazingly healthy. Then I switched to two gallon Hempy pots, and the plants were great again. When I switched to recirculating hydro, the plants were outrageous. I mean it was absolutely silly how fast they grew. Lately I’m growing in tiny ass pots with plants that are so rootbound that they literally need to be fed multiple times per day just to stay alive. And they love it.
With the exception of the organic soil, I’ve only used like three nutrient lines, just adjusting the feed schedule and strength to suit the situation. Once I get that right, the plants are happy as can be. They dgaf, and that just amazes me.
Everyone’s indoor grows honestly look like a pain in the ass to me. I only grow outside and I spend so little time messing with those plants. Basically, throw them in soil, poke at it every now and again and feed them once a week. Especially since I discovered Megacrop. No fuss no muss! However, I am in the process of making a living soil bed in the backyard exclusively for my mj. Planning to try all organics… That will probably be more work. Actually all of the amendments for my entire backyard come tmw. Got a customized broadcast and liquids (cal/mag and fish) as per my recent soil test. Applying the liquids every 2 weeks to my whole backyard is gonna take more time than the entire grow I have in my greenhouse right now.
I envy those who grow outdoors. I’ve always wanted to grow outdoors, it’s just not possible for me in my situation. I always put one or two throw away plants out on the back deck each summer, just so I can watch them grow in the sun for a few weeks. One of these days…
Speaking of indoor grows being a pain in the ass and plants that dgaf, the four biggest plants grew almost two inches taller overnight. They have begun growing even faster, and that’s a problem for me.
I was planning on vegging them for another week, maybe two. I think it would serve them better if I did, but I’m already nervous about running out of headroom. I seriously hate it when that happens! Had a bit of bleaching on each of the last two rounds, when the plants grew tall enough to literally touch the light fixtures that could not be raised any higher.
I’ve got two plants that are several inches shorter but still too tall for the veg cab, so unless they can catch up during the stretch I’m going to have a pretty uneven canopy this time. I kind of expected that, so it’s not a super big deal, but I had hoped it would be more even than this, lol. When I run the clones next round and am not worried about making seeds and removing males after they’ve performed their function, I will put a trellis in place and train them for an even canopy.
In the meantime…
I think I’m gonna have to flip the lights to 12/12 asap.
I decided to cull another of the FDM C99 Mix plants, which appears to be a male. I’ve got at least one more male from the FDM plants that I like much better anyways, and this one grew out at an angle from the surface and just wasn’t looking as healthy as the others. Before doing this I took cuts of all of the plants, including this one, so I can still choose to give it another shot on the next round if I want.
Have I mentioned that I have a thing for checking out the roots? Love me some root shots. These shots were taken about ten days after it was transplanted from a Solo cup into the Floraflex pot.
I just spotted a female preflower on this plant. No indication of the sex on the other HL plant, but I’ve got at least two very nice FDM males in the tent as far as I can tell, and I think they’ll be excellent pollen donors
Tomorrow I’ll take all of the plants out and give them a pruning. The FDM plants are bushy as can be, it’s just ridiculous how many branches they have for plants that have only been topped once. Thinning that out at this stage will be a good thing, while they still have plenty of time to recover.
I think I’ll grab another cutting from this plant while I’m at it
Pretty pleased with how things are going in there today, maybe I’ll see if I can grab some before and after pics tomorrow.
