Filling up a 2x4 in a Midwestern basement

Hello there! I’m a frequent lurker and occasional commenter who finally got the go-ahead to grow again. I did two grows in late 2020/early 2021 and then had to stop. After a long time waiting and buying some more seeds/equipment just to scratch the itch, I finally popped some seeds about 10 days ago and figured why not document things a bit.

My other grows were coco+perlite with GH nutrients. I used a customized feeding schedule from the cocoforcannabis website. It got good results, but I also was watering/fertigating twice daily throughout most of flower (I was using 2 and 3 gallon containers). Now, I have a small child and realistically won’t be able to follow that schedule again. I will need to be able to leave these plants unattended for long weekends and such occasionally. So this time I’m using Promix HP + Mycorrhizae for the longer moisture retention. I don’t care too much about yield since with the aforementioned little one I don’t consume too much, nor does any other member of my household. I would give some away to friends but they all live far away. In fact, I still have probably ~1.5 oz from my last grow since I had to abstain completely for a good chunk of my growing hiatus. It’s still pretty good and does the job, but I’m definitely looking forward to some fresh bud in a few months!

On the growing medium front, that brings up one question I have - does anyone have a feeding guide/schedule they like to use for Promix and liquid nutes? Preferably GH flora series + CaliMagic but anything close to that is helpful. I also sprung for the supplemental stuff (Armor Si, Diamond Nectar, KoolBloom) for the heck of it even though I know a lot of people skip them with good results. Just wondering if the CalMag needs, pH, or anything else would need to differ significantly from a coco schedule considering the Promix is already acidic and buffered with lime. Also, do you water to runoff in Promix or is that not needed?

This is getting long-winded so let me just quickly summarize the setup here then put up some photos.

Environment: 2x4 Gorilla tent. I sprung for this because it’s the tallest 2x4 I could find. My other grows I ran out of room for my light and filter since I had a cheap 2x4x5 tent. I have a basic vivosun inline fan and carbon filter.

Light: I have several grow lights. Right now the seedlings are under a cheap blurple bought off of amazon a few years ago for when we tried our hands starting vegetable seedlings indoors. I’m using it because my other lights are HLG Rspec and I wanted more blue for veg.

Genetics: You can sort of read the strain names in my photos. All of the reg seeds are from the Ethos Lilac Diesel multipack. This is my first time growing some regs which is exciting. The fems are Lemongrass from HSC, OG Kush and Sour Diesel from NASC white label, Mandarin Cookies V2 from Ethos, and Pineapple Chunk from Barney’s. Is it way too much for a 2x4? Probably, but I want variety, man! If I have to cull stuff or severely top, etc. that’s ok because yield is not my concern at all.

Medium/containers: mostly covered in the intro. I’m trying Promix. The final containers will be 4 yellow airpots (I think they’re about 2 gal), 2 orange airpots (smaller…like 1 gal maybe), then assorted 3 gal fabric pots. I know it’s a silly hodgepodge - future grows will be more uniform - probably just airpots once I acquire some more.

Here they are with light/flash on/off and different angles. I foolishly started some of them under two CFLs which caused a ton of stretch. Other than that they seem to be doing okay. A few of the LD crosses are starting to take off, but everything else has been pretty slow. It’s been cool-ish with low humidity which is starting to change this week.

Cheers, and thanks for reading!

From one Midwestern grower to another good luck! I think you’re fine on the strain number, I can fit up to 8 if I pack out my 2x4 but usually run 6 so I think you’ll be good. I can definitely feel the need for flavors out here, hard to come by the “real thing” where i am. Looking forward to seeing how it turns out for ya.

You should be good using one of their feeding charts. I run ProMix but use Drip Hydro nutrients, been following their feed chart to the T and have had great results thus far. The longest I can go without watering my 2x4 girls in 1 gal pots is 3 days too, which is nice.

You’ve got some dope genetics growin’, excited to see this garden progress. Best of luck.

Sounds like you need a octopot. similar situation I don’t have a lot of time for the garden. As long as you can fill the octopots on e a week your good to go.

You don’t need to water to runoff in Promix, just make sure you see some runoff. Your setup looks solid, and don’t worry about the stretch, they’ll catch up.

WOW, I can’t do more than 3 in a two my 2X4. I tried 4 but didn’t get more than 2 plants in that area,

I just did a grow in the same medium @HeartOfDankness. I could do a long weekend in a 3 gallon pot but that was the very limit.

Looking good
So how many plants will you be growing in the 2x4?

I like to put 4 plants in a 2x4 but I admit I’m pushing it.

Thanks for following alongeverybody! I’ll definitely keep octopots in mind for future grows. I also would like to try my hand at DWC at some point. I have the equipment. Will probably do it if I find a plant I really like then maybe do a 1 or 2 plant grow for yield that way.

Right now I have 12 seedlings - 5 fems and 7 regs. I was kind of shooting for 8 after culling males. I do want to try my hand at pollen chucking someday, but for this run I just want to end up with some nice sensi. I know it’s gonna be cramped, but I’ll do my best to keep the plants small-ish. If it’s really getting out of hand I might cull some more, or maybe expand the operation a little bit :smiling_imp:… but that would be a “better to ask forgiveness than permission” sort of situation with my beloved haha.

The LD crosses are thriving - starting to get some nice 3-pointed leaves on most of them. Everything else is still slow or even struggling. I overwatered last week which I think explains some of it. That and the environment is definitely not dialed-in super well. Here’s how things are looking today:

The OG Kush and Pineapple Chunk in particular are struggling a little bit. They are still pretty bogged down with water from last week. I assume the roots are just struggling a little bit and hopefully things catch up. Not sure what’s going on with the leaf discoloration. Might be mineral stuff from spraying tap water on them or something. Not gonna worry about it too much for now.

I just hooked up my small HLG Rspec (I believe it’s 120ish watts at the wall) and noticed that the barrel connector (crappy pic below) is buzzing like a transformer. Never noticed on my other grows, but then again this puppy has sat in storage for 2 years so maybe something has gotten deteriorated? Also, my amateur wiring job could certainly be a culprit. Should I be concerned/try to fix it?

Make sure you have no loose wire .
I’m sure that’s what’s causing the issue.
Open it up and give the wires a good tightening.
You should be good.
Also be careful it is not getting hot .
That is a big indicator wires are loose.
Happy growing.

I don’t want to speak to your wiring but I’d get that cord off the top of the light asap. Zip tie it to the hanging cable if you have to.

Just my suggestion on so many strains, treat everyone the same and keep those that tolerate it, you’ll kill yourself trying to keep the individuals happy. Plants look good though

Thanks for the advice! I unplugged it and put it to the side for now. Got a different light going in the meantime. I probably won’t get a chance to take it apart and look for loose connections until Monday. Ironically I have more time to attend to my grow during the week since I’m mostly remote and not on too tight of a leash from the boss man. Weekends get filled up with parenting, family/friends visits, and chores/errands.

@Foreigner I take zero offense on wiring commentary lol. I moved the whole light out of the tent for troubleshooting purposes. I remember struggling to braid the wires right in that barrel connector and even used a little solder to keep things together. Might have been foolish since I was pretty much winging it. Hadn’t ever soldered previously.

@Naptown916 I am with you on this. I won’t be mixing up multiple nutrient solutions or anything like that. Just gonna try to make the variety thing work while minimizing hassle. If some of the ladies end up suboptimal that’s ok. I just like to get a little high…I ain’t exactly a connoisseur haha.

Go on then. I’ll follow along for this one. Also growing in a 2x4

I have 4 plants in a flood and drain system. (I’m going away for a week today so wont see them for that time)
I topped 4 ways and I’m growing out a kush strain. Jack’s rainbow. Short, stocky indicas. Using old solstrips for lighting.
The pots themselves are 5l square buckets.
Can’t comment on your feed cos I’m testing chemgen nutes. (A UK lesser known company) with good results. Except a bit of root rot which should be dealt with now I’m adding h202 to the res.
Maybe automation will be your friend if time isn’t on your side. Set up a dripper system maybe?

Very nice start.
@Foreigner is right about the wiring. Plus the light will degrade about everything. Plus being on the light it will get hot. HLG are some good lights. I love the 100r. I do love the blue light. I have an older light like that.
Good Growing

It’s a nice quiet Monday morning here at chez HeartOfDankness, so time for a garden update! Things are coming along pretty nicely. Here’s a shot of all the plants back under the blue light.

The LD crosses are getting their first 5-pointed leaves. Oh yeah, we’re growing some pot now :sunglasses: !

Not sure why the leaf is taco-ing a bit like that. It’s still got some moisture in it. Not concerned.

Over the weekend I filled up 2 5 gallon carboys with RO water from the grocery store. My tap water is about 300 EC right now (which I think is 150 ppm) which overshot my EC targets after mixing nutes. The RO is pretty cheap ($0.39 a gallon to refill your own containers) so I’ll use these 10 gallons up and by then the plants should be able to handle higher EC I reckon. I used tap water through my other grows just fine. The main issue with it is that it comes out of the tap about 8.5 pH. No pH Up needed here!

Outdoor fruit/veg garden update because why not? Excited for the apple and blueberry crop this year. The apple trees are 2 years old now and the blueberries are 4. Should be a bumper crop for both if I can keep the squirrels, birds, and bugs at bay.
Apples (this is one of two trees, the variety is Zestar I believe):

Blueberries:

And now my sad strawberries  . Several issues with these lil guys. One, the squirrels love to go and eat the berries before they’re mature and we get a chance at them. Hence the hardware cloth/chicken wire. Second, one of the plants (there are 3 varieties here) is getting a lot of discoloration/spots on the leaves. Finally, bugs. I think they’re aphids? Got a pretty good shot of them here. If there are any strawberry farmers in the house with suggestions, I’m all ears!

Hoping to have some time to take apart the barrel connector on that HLG and see what’s going on.

Cheers and thanks for reading!

Well, I hooked up the HLG again and the buzzing was gone. I took apart the barrel connector and tightened the little screws anyway. So now the plants are under all of the full spectrum glory! Both of my HLGs are Rspec, which I think means this might stretch them a little bit? But the nodes were pretty tight, so I don’t mind.

Overall I’m happy with where things are at. Would like to see a bit more pep in the smaller ones, but I guess the roots are probably still hard at work or something. Getting some yellowing in the first set of true leaves on a few of the LD crosses.
Here’s a closer look at the tallest plant. It’s Grape Diamonds X Lilac Diesel BX3. Hopefully a female!

I will probably up-pot these lil’ guys and gals into their final containers next week sometime, then veg a little longer and flip maybe early next month.

In other news, work is dumb. Feeling big Peter Gibbons energy this morning. Except I’m gonna keep going because nobody is hiring and I have a kid to feed/shelter/etc. Have a good weekend everybody!

Happy up-potting day! Here’s the last shot of the plants in their old configuration.

At this point all but the 3 smallest plants germinated over a month ago. The small ones are about a week behind. Not sure why they’re so slow. I think I might be underwatering a bit. When up-potting I was hoping to see some decent root porn, but that was not the case.

I figured this would have been enough time for the roots to make it to the bottom of these little seedling pots, but maybe I just never saturated the medium enough? I did take out a small loan to buy a little bottle of GH RapidStart on Tuesday. Plants got the first dose of it in their new containers so maybe that will help things along.

Here’s what they look like in their final containers (except for most of the LD crosses that are regs…I think I will probably let the plants recover from the transplanting then do a couple days of 12/12 so I can cull the males and get my plants into a final configuration.)

Now that they’re so spread out I decided to just bust out my bigger light. I love how much more room I have in this tent! Previous one was only 5 feet tall.

They’re getting big enough that I can do a little stem rub. The LD crosses range from pungent/gas to pretty fruity. The OG Kush definitely has some citrus going on or something like that. The other fems are mostly fruity as well. I can dig it!
