First ever grow… little nervous and overwhelmed

im guessing youre in a somewhat densely populated area? staggering harvest of one small auto at a time could work, going to try this to a degree next year. but essentially you can start them indoors for 1.5 months then place them outside to flower for 1.5 months.
a consistent minor stench all summer could be more lowkey then one loud one in sep/oct when the rippers are out in illegal states. ive walked by many front yards with weeds that smelled almost like weed, perhaps they were there for that purpose, which brings in companion crops: plant a shitload of flowers and veggies everywhere and people are so lazy they will give up looking for the 4’ autoflowers.

I have been selecting for plants that don’t require any filtration and yet have something that at least cures into flower with some character. Not being able to have mother plants vegging in the house without the smell gets you into another level of setup.
It really depends what your preference is, but C99 and many northern lights hybrids will not require any elaborate filtration and are completely stealthy right through to the end of flower.
I am just 6 weeks in to a seed run where I have crossed an AK48 male with a cherry cough drop stem rub to a C99 and one of @SHSC-1 's coastal blueberries (NL pheno?), which are all completely stealthy, but still have character.
I can send you quite a few C99 seeds made from PeakSeedsBC genetics and 2005 Joey Weed genetics if you want? You could then focus on just learning how to grow some plants without as much ducting/scrubbing/venting.

I have a really good feeling about the C99xAK48 cross as I mentioned above, but the seeds won’t be ready for a bit.

Just DM me if you would like some.

Quick update. Haven’t watered them in a day and a half the cups are still a little heavy. I didn’t realize my wife did add holes to the bottom but I added a few more so should drain good. Getting yellow leaves on the bottom of the better looking plant I assume from too much water. Should I trim off ? Also have been putting them outside to get more sun and that seems to have really given them a growth boost. Pictures attached. Is the small one a lost cause ? image image image

Top 2 is the more healthy looking plant bottom one is the less then stellar looking plant.

They do look better. The yellowing is likely from overwatering. I notice you don’t have any perlite mixed in your soil, so it will stay wet longer.

I usually water every day or every other, but no perlite you will be more like every other or every three days. The best indicator is the weight of the pot though until you get a feel for frequency.

I don’t think the little one is a lost cause. You would be surprised how a plant can survive with just the tiniest leaf exposed to a little bit of light.

As long as these are photoperiod you’re doing fine. The top one looks much happier and the bottom guy does look over watered, but he will pull through.

I don’t have any idea about what kind of plant it is but this is the package it came in with the labeling If that gives you any info.

Imo the best way to contain smell is by using a gr⁹ow tent with a fan/carbon filter. Some strains aren’t too bad, but some others…a single plant can reallĺy stink up an area

dont really believe in amassing a bunch of products or snake oils. this however is the only additive i have currently besides base ferts and calcium. i soak roots (usually) in it after busting up the rootball right before planting. never got measurable results adding Mykos powder in like others seem to, but i will soak the dixie cups in this before sowing seeds and it seems to allow them to access nutes quicker and more efficiently.
probably coincidence/anecdotal but i have noticed much less stretching in young seedlings when using it as well.

Would you suggest removing the yellow leaves?

I would probably leave them until they get all crispy and dry.

You can transplant them in bigger pots already, the yellowing is likely a combo of overwatering and root limitation. Perhaps the soil lacking something or being too hot.

You can get a bag of certified organic potting soil to start off with, or any organic soil you can find that’s decent.

Keep them on the windowsil in sunlight as much as possible, I noticed they grow faster in the sun.

I’m experimenting with compost towers now, should be pretty fool proof, throw in kitchenscraps (especially bananapeels) and pour water down the tower so the topsoil stays more dry, that prevents insects like fungus gnats laying eggs. :+1:

Check out my journal for more info if you want a very easy way of growing.

What soil are you gonna transplant into?

Great question. I have regular top soil and also some worm castings to mix in. Do you have any better Recommendations?? what pot size should I be looking at ?

If you have topsoil and worm castings, I’d highly recommend adding some aeration to that mix.
(Ideally you’d use compost instead of topsoil, but you can work with what you’ve got.)
For aeration try adding (1/4 to 1/3) by volume of
Pumice, rice hulls, perlite etc. That’ll help reduce soil compaction and help prevent over watering.

Pot size… whatever is the biggest that can fit on your windowsil. :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:
And also fits inside a dark space for flowering.

I do have some left over leaf compost do you think that’s better to use ? Or mix with the top soil and castings ?

Leaf compost is awesome! Lots of minerals.
Mix it all up. Diversity is key.

Ahh yeh absolutely use that.
Mixed with topsoil, worm castings and some form of aeration and you’ve got a pretty good mix to use for growing.

There are some amendments that you can add too, ideally stuff like Volcanic rock dust (basalt), Gypsum, Kelp meal. There’s a tonne of other stuff as well, but I’d say those 3 are probably best to add if you can only choose a few.
Build A Soil have a great selection of amendments, but I’m sure if you look locally you’ll find somewhere that does them too.

I’ll look into getting those additives you mentioned. Here’s the top soil/leaf compost mixed up that I’m bringing home from work. Castings are at home. (Bonus snake from digging around)
