First Grow - Late Summer Start

White Widow Update - Direct sow, week 5
Still clicking along. Third set of true leaves coming in.

Zkittles and Gelato died. Tried two direct sows for each strain. All seeds sprouted. All seedlings seemed to have been attacked by something in the garden bed.

Wedding Cake - Direct sow from 13 July 2021 died. It struggled for about three weeks and died. Roots were really small and it never got very tall. I may have sowed the seed too deep.

Wedding Cake - Direct sow, 2 August 2021

Trying again with one seed sown outdoors and one indoors. Both attempts are protected by bells with screen over the bell openings. Observed guttation the last three mornings; removing extruded sap with q-tip to prevent leaf burn. The indoor seedling is extruding more sap than the outdoor seedling. This could be due to size as the outdoor seedling is smaller. Both seedlings are a much darker green compared to the first attempt.

Outdoor seedling sprouted 8 August 2021.

Indoor seedling sprouted 7 August 2021.

White Widow update. Direct sow; week 5.

Wedding Cake. Outdoor direct sow, week 2.

Wedding Cake. Indoor direct sow, week 2.

Looking at the indoor seedling compared to the outdoor plants really shows what a diiference constant 20-25C temperature makes.

#4 is a very neat photo as Gpaw said. I love it.

Quick update. Everyone is still alive and growing. I began taking the bells off during the day. I also started feeding everyone Burpee Organic All-Purpose 5-2-4 at one-third strength. I plan on feeding every 7 days for now.

Update. Feedings have definitely helped. I think next grow I will amend the soil more thoroughly (compost wasn’t good enough), follow the ILGM feeding schedule, and test the soil often. It’s also really rainy this time of year. Hopefully everyone will get way more sun and just the right amount of water in a spring/summer grow. I have been using the strawberry bed this grow. This bed is not getting enough sun. Will use the old tomato bed next year.

White Widow, direct sow at 8 weeks.

She‘s starting to flower! I’m not sure how much she‘ll be able to produce. She’s a shorty at 11cm tall.

Wedding Cake, direct sow at 4 weeks.

Still clicking along.

Wedding Cake, indoor sow at 4 weeks. Transplanted outside at 2 weeks.

It did NOT like the transplant. The first two sets of true leaves fell off. Sticking to direct sow in the future. This one is in the tomato bed; wild sow tomato plants can be seen in the background with some scallions that have grown big.

Update:

White Widow finish up this week. It’s just too pathetic looking to share. I think I could count the number of flowers produced by that poor plant. I think it was starved for nutrients throughout the entire grow. :sob:

Wedding Cake, Direct sow at 12 weeks.

She’s growing up! Adding nutrients through most of the grow has had a positive impact.

I hope she’s ready for harvest before the first hard freeze. I’m covering it at night as our night temperatures are below 10C.
