ok i wanna do more then fuck around and find out and as much as i like going into rabit holes im still not sure how to venture into this tunnel
lets say Strain A ticks the yield and stucture i want but fails the terp and potency desired
but strainB does the opposite
how should i go about this? should i try every male of B on the A keeper till i get a pool of progeny that fits what i want or should i hunt a femal and do a reverse cross?
trying to figur out wich path to choose cuz using random males is akin to playing bingoo for me and im not into bingo very much
First decide what is more important to you, if plant A is more important, you make it the donor and vise versa.
Grow the seeds, if nothing found, grow more (if you didnāt already grew enough)
If still nothing, switch the donor (if the cut is really that worth it)
Grow the seeds, choose the next keeper in line, remember, it has to be "betterā in order to further refine the line.
S1 it or cross depending on your goals and traits you wanna introduce or enhance.
Grow the seeds, keep selection tight without emotions towards your desired outcomes.
At the end, itās about goals, most of breeding is done in relation to making seeds more homogeneous in later generations but define your goals is what I think is most important when your trying to reach just one special plant.
You want a female from strain B, the more potent one. Use a male from strain A to fix the structure and whatnot. Then pick the resulting girls that have what you want. Find male(s) that smell and look exactly like the best girl(s) and inbreed.
Or do it all with fems if you donāt care about reg beans.
Personally, Iād self it, if I thought trait I was looking for was in there somewhere, like parent had it. if not, Iād find a female, and cross it.
But, thats jus my opinion. It kind of depends on how much space you have to work with too. By selfing or crossing with a female, you only have to grow half as many plants to find what your looking for,
then i now know what my little sts kit will end up used for
so now the keeper being the donor starts to make more sense
?
i should reverse the keeper and polinate the potent one and search thruogh the seeds for what might be my expected treasure? (in a perfect fairy tale)
Iām not sure Iām following you exactly but I might be inclined to segregate a few males, collect their pollen, then selectively pollinate individual branches.
That way you get your keeper/variety and still have some smoke at the end of the day.
You could use a Punnett Square to break down genotype traits from chosen parenting stock and how they may cross mix. Theres some simplified and some complex youtube videoās on the punnet square.
@amumayuk This is something Iāve just heard about and am learning about this myself for the same reasons as youāve described. Wasted time is the hardest to recover from so if this mitigates some of the mistakes could save months of work
exactly why im often criticized for asking alot of questions
i was already aware of punnet squares but i think its intended uses is for alleles
and 1 trait could depend on multiple allele
wich in turn made me not want to botther cuz i could easily do it wrong
Hey @amumayuk . If youāre not confident in selecting males, the short answer is you should stick to female to female crosses. Itās much easier to select for the traits you like as they are much more evident and visible allowing you to get to your end goal faster. General rule of thumb(but definitely not set in stone): Pollen donor brings visible morphology( including innersex traits so pick carefully) and the pollen receiver brings terps & effects. Best of luck!!
There is no āvisibleā way of choosing a male in a way that can tell you how the fem will smoke.
Only growing the seeds.
A superior male is considered one that doesnāt overpower your fem in effects or terps.
Some use them to enhance structure, resistance to disease etc,
Males are the most easy to make seeds from, but takes a lot more time sifting through to find the one that will let your fems shine.
If you have a killer cut, S1 it to preserve it.
If your cut needs something, cross it to a fem that carries that trait.
Always make sure the donor is the āstrongerā one, meaning the one that has the best reflection of your selections.
