Getting a doggg

I want a kid friendly, easy to train, home defender.

What’s the best breed?

English Staffordshire Bull Terrier.
Probably not so much the home defender but they will protect you and your kids.

No, I don’t think so. It’s to ugly Pedro :joy::joy:

I don’t like the slobber

Afghan Wolfhound for my opinion. Bombproof, very loyal, obedient and smart. Apparently scary too
As an example, I used to watch my two eldest kids (at age 5 and 8) jump all over my chaser, and have to put her in the shed when friends came around.
But really, regardless of breed, it’s all about how you bring them up and what their boss wants them to be that will dictate what any dog is going to be like.

Rottweiler and sharpei are IMHO the best soft batshit crazy guard dogs you’ll get. So they’re good with kids but might savage you if you’re into chastising your children so be cautious if u do go for either of those.

This is also very true you could just find a breed you like and Mould it into behaving like you want it to behave.

German Shepherd is everything you asked for

Or how about a smaller dog? We have a Sheltie & his bark will wake the dead. Any time the door goes he lights up. Delivery people & postman keep their distance. Smart & very trainable, smaller (so easier to keep) & great dogs that everybody loves.

Breeders have modified German Shepards so their back legs are shorter than the front ones, and that gives them problems sooner or later. Great Dan would be my choice if you’ve got terrain. They don’t need to be aggressive, just their presence is enough and are perfect for kids. This was the “grandpa” of my previous one … :sunglasses:

Put a saddle on it and your kids can ride it to school as well lol.

We have 2 dogs, one is my daughter’s boyfriends dog, it’s a Bernice mountain dog, big, probably 2/3 the size of George’s Great Dane, it’s amazing with toddlers, I was concerned when a buddy came round with 2 and 3 year old kids, that he would step on them, or bang into them, as he gets boisterous. He went real calm and layed down so they could pet him, after five minutes they were using him as a climbing frame lol. If my daughter and her boyfriend argue or are fighting over the tv remote he gets between them like a referee and pushes them apart, until they stop.

Sheds hair like a maniac though, and drools every where, that’s his only downside.

I think some breeds are more calm than others but as said, it’s how you train and bring them up.

When you know you’re a big bastard and nothing is really bigger than you, you’d recognise that you’re the alpha and nobody is going to challenge you. That’s the thing about big dogs they’re a bit much to punish

That’s it, little dogs are much more nervous and their only defence is barking, so assured headache. I can walk in the woods and meet a wild boar, no prob at all, or discuss with nerds in the street, she will take care of me ….

I dunno about that size thing I have a miniature sharpei and he goes from 0-100 within seconds extremely aggressive and he’s had nothing but loving. But then look at this dogs balls he’s got the minerals to fuck with anybody :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

Tbh tho I think with dogs it doesn’t matter about breed an stuff obviously a bigger dog would be more confident vs a large opponent but my dog has bit grown men not that I use him for that but he has protected himself and I must admit I’ve met westies and Yorkshire terriers with more balls than let’s say a French mastiff.

That’s why I only have ladies! Males are always looking for trouble and peeing around. Like in humans, balls are not a good counselior while taking action … :sunglasses:

Just about any properly trained dog would die to defend its master, so you don’t necessarily need to go the pitbull, rottweiler etc route. Shepherds are definitely super smart and loyal dogs. A lab will rip someone’s face off if they attack you… I’d say look more into what you and your family want out of a dog first, then security second.

Statistically you’re more likely to get bitten by the likes of a Labrador in the UK than a staff for instance. Dogs are very much like people. Mix them with good people. You get good dogs.

I understand the negative comments regarding shepherds as a breed are for the breeders not the dogs. Issues mainly stemmed from line breeding as police dogs. My first shepherd was a cast off from Greater Manchester police. Issues with hips began at 3 years old and ended very much prematurely for him at 5 years old by which point he couldn’t walk.

After that we got ace (another rescue that bit someone’s thumb off. Shit happens when you stick your hand between 2 shepherds fighting) ace is still going at nearly 11 albeit at a friend’s house with a much bigger flatter garden. (Started getting unsteady on his legs at 9)

I rode our GD ‘Casey’ until about age 4. RIP old dude. Probably my first friends were him & a mini schnauzer.
