Grandaddy Purple - Ken's GDP - Legit or BS?

i think the majority of people are enamored with the high THC strains. old school strains can’t really compete so demand is pretty low. i think a lot of good old school strains have died out this way.

of all the “GDP” i have grown out, i have been most frustrated with Ken’s seeds. germination rate is bad and the seedlings struggle and grow in microscopic increments. VERY low vigor. susceptible to disease and insects. i have a few seeds left, but they have red flagged themselves to the lowest priority bottom of the pile.
just going to work with my selections for the time being.

i think a lot of the “purple” strains (especially those with GDP in their genetics) end up being good medicinal plants. i’m all for bringing them back.

I will tell you back when I grew outside that I would never grow Ken’s gdp outdoor again. It did the worst out of all the plants as far as bug attacks. BT is your friend early for preventive spray for worms and or borers. It felt like they were attracted to both of them, but shit all speculation really who knows…one I bubble hashed and the other was decent flower. Not mids or anything, but top shelf… not so much and sensitive outdoor. Not a problem these days been on an indoor diet for quite some time. Y’all be good and keep that thumb green.

this seems to be the general consensus. from what i understand, the male used to make ken’s GDP reg seeds was unstable. hence so much trouble with the ken’s seeds.

most GDP “reproductions” from other breeders used a ken’s clone to outcross, then back cross (several generations) or self the clones to come up with their seed lines.

it is unfortunate and frustrating that the kens seeds are so damn unstable.

GDP is a spidermite MAGNET. they will ignore all other plants in the garden for a crack at the GDP. every. single. time.
i EXPECT the bugs to hit the GDP every time i put it outside. it never disappoints. covered in bugs within a week or so.
f^cking annoying.

i do both. but prefer outdoors. God has the best light system.

The solid purple color is recessive, hence the need for a clone only pheno.
The seed line has always had green phenos and green/purple phenos, solid purple has always been more rare to find in the seed line.

While I havent grwon them, Luck 13 Seeds, in Canada ( Im in USA ) has a GDP reproduction, that is supposed to really good, and stable. It is at F5. I bought 2 packs of them, but havent grown them.
Professor Sprout, has some really really good genetics.
No affiliation. One of the few places I will order from across any border. I also like Hemp Depot.ca.

Seed momma pollinated around 14 days, maybe even earlier, and starting to split. I noticed a tan seed splitting… pics from two days ago. All the Best… of Buds.

Male Plant at 9 days of flip, guessing day 12-14 pollination occurred. Visual signs of pollination right around 17-18 days of bloom. Definitely going to be plenty of seeds. :smirk:

Kens Pink Champagne is one of the most memorable smokes I have ever had, and I don’t say that lightly. I shared it with my brother, and he feels the same way to this day. I picked it up at a dispensary in Richmond, California near the Hilltop Mall back in 2013. I haven’t seen it around since. Anyone know of a good source on seeds for this strain?

@WeTokeChronic was this one of the strains you had those seeds of and wanted to get in as a co-op?

That’s his strain Phantom aka Pink Champagne I grew it back in the day it’s another super dark purple plant that produces some super tasty purp! I don’t have these seeds tho I have GDP, OGK, Candyland, White Buffalo, Purple Dream, and his “Bay11”!
I took down the post from what seemed like a lack of interest and figured I’d do it all myself, eventually! GDP is first for me and I wanted someone to do the bay11 (Appalachia x OG) or OG Kush (OG x Tahoe OG) while I do the GDP and then Candyland :fire:

I haven’t seen it in years, but this reminds me I really need to pop an old pack of kens phantom kush. The phantom was an alternate name for champagne. it’s a hybrid of the cut known as phantom/ champagne/ moet. The seeds are probably verrrry old.

I think that’s the same cut as pink champagne, I have good memories of the phantom / champagne.

edit- looks like wetokechronic answered the question above, it is the same.

Winding down with the seed run, plucked my first seed last night, 49 days complete so the beginning of Day 50. Pollination happened faster than I originally thought, the male sacks were ready to burst in the beginning of Day 10. Looking more and more like Day 11 or 12. Anyway, good times, I may just vape the leftovers, or dry sift it for some Rosin. Decisions, Decision, and I don’t need it right now so to the back burner she goes on ice ready to fire at will. Last minute thought, the momma plant is stinky early, even fully seeded, that urkle seems to be shining through. Not what I’m looking for clone momma wise, but a good seed mother candidate… she will have to do. Keep Em’ Green.

I tried to pluck another seed, but it wasn’t quite ready and willing. Be green to one Another. :metal:

Plucked a few more last night, solid looking seeds for safe keeping. I have other plants ready to move in so it’s a WRAP they used to say… for this experient/project. I’ll dry her for 5 days or so, small buds so it won’t be 7-10 days which is common this time of year. Be Green to one Another!

P.S on a side note, I would have definitely given more Nitrogen for a seed Momma run, and I did have a slight temporary heat issue, but was corrected right away… and is for the future of growing.

If you want purple they have to get cold. Below 50 degrees.

I get purple streaks all the time without cold manipulation (dry ice back in the day comes to mind), as a matter of fact, my last harvest was in hot ass July and purple streaks all through the buds. I’ll be hunting for natural colored phenos, cold shock need not apply.
