Just got to watch this … cool set up … couldn’t believe you actually reflect off that netting… crazy… that haze is getting unruly
The new hanging pots I ordered arrived. I like euro pots as they have epic drainage holes. Well, yay for me for keeping all of my trailing succulents alive and not overwatering them to death. Also, boo on me, as I neglected them completely and they were root bound, dying from being dry as the desert still in the promix that they came in from the nursery. All but one is over a year old. Somehow, I managed not to break off a bunch of the long branches transplating them. They got that really nice organic succulent soil and a thorough watering. The worse for the wear was my string of dolphins aka bananas. Lack of water had killed quite a few long strings and many I had to cut in half. My guess is they will all rebound like crazy now as I think I now finally know what I’m doing. Anyway, here they are in new homes…
This one is a new one… String of tears
Little pickles aka Ruby Slippers
Burros tail
Ruby Cascade
String of bananas
String of pearls
Now, do I litfa for one week or two? I’m thinking 2 weeks.
Succulents are awesomely hardy and super forgiving of lack of water… I have a variety of stonecrops, sedums and hardy succulents in my stone walls here, and whenever I break them, I just toss the broken piece in the bed, presto-chango new plant, oops!
You do get some cooler succulents though being in a warmer climate. We’ll get some desert ones here but they won’t overwinter if ya dont bring em inside.
I’m pretty sure all of my trailing varieties are sold as indoor plants anywhere short of Zone 10
Zone 6B / 7A in my town… Most available succulents here are indoor plants save for hens n chicks, sedums and a few others. All the cool ones sold here are definitely indoor or only summer outside. Likely a lot of Zone 10 + stuff like blue fingers, crassula, donkey tails, etc…
Why? Why would I suddenly have a nitrogen deficiency? Is it just because of bud transitioning? This happened overnight
Is it just the lower leaves? All the plants or just one?
Your original soil test did show low N numbers. They had you add plenty of ammonium sulfate in their recommendations, so there shpuld be plenty of N.
Could be compaction, not allowing enough oxygen get to the roots. Try and put a spade in the ground and see if it gets tough below your till depth.
2 plants and lower fans
Ammonium sulfate doesn’t stay in the soil very long especially if you water a lot. If anything you could try adding additional N.
If it’s compacted what do I do without damaging the roots?
I could do a liquid fish drench, but my sodium levels are already high from my tap water
You could make small trench along side of your plant say 2 inches deep and put a little more of your nitrogen in it and cover then just water it in that way. Since you till your ground if you can work your N. In deep say 7 or 8 inches before planting it will last a lot longer
What should I do for them now though… They are 2 weeks into bud
I would bury a little nitrogen and water it in. Just a couple inches though. Non organic nitrogen ferts like the one you use turn to gas very quickly. Especially if it’s not buried deep into the soil.
So, I know that I’ve mentioned before that I have a anxiety disorder. I’m out there just now, kinda freaking out checking the soil, tearing up the grass with my bare hands when I see an inch long pillar. Throws me into a complete panic attack. How could this mofo be this big without me seeing him before and why is he here? So I completely spazz out, drench the whole tent and plants with BT. My heart is racing like I’m gonna have a heart attack. Something about that pillar just triggered me big time.
I’m just gonna do a liquid fish drench either tmw or Friday and hopefully it helps. I only have dry nutes for vegetables in the garage. I’m worried about putting anymore Potassium or Phosphorous as my soil levels are already high. If it doesn’t then I don’t know right now in this state I’m in.
Breathe! Nothing is going to change overnight no matter what haste you have.
… and smile
Thanks, My friend! Sometimes I go very long periods of time with zero anxiety then BAM! something just sets it off in an instant. It was probably a whole days worth of small stuff piling on top of each other.
You are right though, not like the plants are gonna die or anything. lol
Humic acid is a soil conditioner and makes transport of nutrients easier for microbes. If you have a hard subsoil it won’t hurt.
I struggle with this too it’s one of the reasons I grow all the time, even when I don’t need to for other reasons. The mindfulness that comes from following the plants through their lives is very helpful. Observing them change day by day, through the day even, is analogous to how days go for us in a general sense. We have bad days, we eat crap that doesn’t always agree with us etc.
From my point of view this is an excellent example of why soil is a good choice. These plants will be fine.
That’s a thought. I could pick some up on Friday. Tmw the man and I are heading to the Orange County Fair. We didn’t get to go the last year cuz of covid and I miss seeing all of the farm animals. lol One year, I called a cow over and she came right to me like a dog and started nibbling my hair. lol It was really gross, but also super cute. I had to wash the slobber out of my hair shortly after, but I loved that cow. Crazy animal lover here. Plus, one of the vendors makes those silly necklaces where they twist your name or whatever you want written into it and one of my favorites broke, so I need a replacement.
