Guess who's breeding?! This girl!

It’s been 5 weeks since you pollinated.
How are those seeded branches looking :green_heart: :seedling:

That hand is now addicted to breeding, good luck with the passion😁 Your focus will change the more you test and grow your seeds.

Doc og

She is fighting me to make it to harvest, almost every fan leave has turned yellow an is falling off

The doc og definitely took the best, looks like I’m only going to get a few seeds off the other two. Gotta work on my breeding technique next time

Here’s some closer pictures of her trichomes that she finally formed lol

@SativaKid you’ve got that right! Y’all got me addicted as soon as I received my first seed pack. I wouldn’t have it any other way :green_heart:

My first seed!! I noticed it was popping out so I grabbed before it fell. It’s one of the doc og seeds. How do I name these? Does the mother come first, like Trex x doc og?

I currently have the branches hanging over a bin incase anymore fall out

Yep, that’s right. Female x pollen donor , in that order @Heather420 . Congrats on your seed harvest!:peace_symbol:

So when’s the right time to harvest seeds? From my understanding it’s when the seed pods crack open, but do you wait till they’re all open? Do you go by when the plant is ready for harvest?

Are the seeds ready to use after you dry the plant? What’s my next step for improving the genetics if I want to?

Ive been lurking in this thread and followed you journey, congrats for your first seeds :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

Cannabis take around 6 weeks from pollination to form viable seeds, so i harvest when 6 weeks have roughly passed. You can wait until the plants is ready for harvest aswell, but as you have noticed, some seeds may get lost.

You need to dry the seeds, i usually put then in a bag of rice and after they have dryed for couple of days ill pressure test the seed. Just put them between you fingers and press, If the seed crack its not developed properly and you can discard it.

You should write down everything you remember about the mother and the father, its the beginning to improve upon genetics. There you can look which traits the offspring express and that will give you a clue to which traits is dominant. If a trait show in alot of your offspring then you are looking at a dominant trait.

To improve upon your genetics you have to be critical of which traits you like and which you dont and find plants that got the traits you want to replace the traits you dont like with.

You can also run two offspring of the same sort to each other. This will give you F2s which will have a high amount of recombination. This give you a wider range of expressions which might give you uber versions or total runts.

Its all up to you which journey you want to take.

Heather,

As we are all unique individuals you are going to get a variety of acceptable ways on how to harvest your seeds. I am still experimenting with the best ways to harvest seeds. I can tell you what has worked the best with the different ways that I have experimented with thus far.

As you have pollinated the lowers only on your plant I would harvest your buds above the seeded branches when the trichomes are acceptable for you. (More on Trichomes at another time). As you pollinated your plant at week 3 (August 31st) of flower and plants generally need between 4-6 (Sept 28 - Oct 12) weeks to fully mature. You could probably safely harvest your seeds on the 12th… But.Every plant is a little different…

Let me explain…

Yes, You could theoretically start pulling your mature seeds off the plant at 6 weeks and you should get a bunch of mature seeds. You can slap the seeded branches against the side of a bowl or something and some seeds will fall off. You will most likely then have to manually go back into the plant and pull off any seeds that did not fall off. This process can take a bit of time and if you have a few plants it can take awhile. You may also be pulling off some seeds that are not mature and after doing a pinch test of the beans you have been harvesting you will find there are going to be some seeds that are not fully developed.

With all that said I have found it to be way less time consuming to just let the plant die/dry naturally. What? After you have harvested the top branches of the plants flower buds. Just keep giving your plant water only. This will give any seeds that we not mature a little bit more time to mature. At least you will know you gave all of your seeds a fighting chance to mature. You will notice your plant will slowly start to die/dry itself out over time. You can bring out a big bowl or similar if you would like during this time and slap a branch on the inside of the bowl to get any seeds that are about to fall off if you would like. I just keep watering as normal and wait until the plant is dying or pretty dried out all by itself. This is were you need to make a choice. If you allow the branches to dry out naturally on the plant you will most likely have a few or more than a few seeds drop on the ground never to be seen again. That is until they start to grow… I have found it easier to just water after harvesting the flower portion of the plant until you see your plant starting to dye/dry out a bit naturally (brown’s up a bit). At this point bag the clearly marked branch and let it dry out completely.

What is completely? Well rather than harvesting your seeds and then letting them dry… it is much easier to just let the seeds dry out with any flower left of the branches. As you live in a very dry environment mold should not be an issue. But just in case check your drying seeded buds to to make sure. Now after your seeded buds have dried out you should be able to just pull the now crispy dried buds from the branches and the seeds will be easily separated from any flower/plant material. Be careful, as the seeds inside the dried buds will fall everywhere. make sure to have a bowl or similar under the seeded buds when pulling the dried buds from the plant.
If you have waited until all the plant material is completely dried it will be way easier to separate any and all of the plant material from the seeds After all the plant material is removed you can safely store your beans in a cool dark place with as little moisture as possible. Refrigerator would be the best in my opinion.

If you prefer you can germinate a few seeds before storing them in the fridge just to make sure they are mature and dried out properly.

Just my .02… :call_me_hand:

I tend to do the lazy guy seed gather leave them in the finished bud till you need some store in the freezer . But that’s just me some times I’ll pull all the seeds out and store properly depending on how ambitious I am.

Not sure if it has any effect on germ rates or storage length life expectancy but for now it seems to work.

I let the pollinated branches go as long as possible. Harvest all the flower you’re going to use, and leave the pollinated branches on the plant until they get overripe.

Hang them to dry, each with a paper bag underneath because the seeds might start to fall out when they get dry. Let the branches get very dry, much more dry than you would do for your smokable flower. Then, your can easily break up the very dry flower material and the seeds will separate from the chaff.

Then, to separate the chaff, I put the broken up stuff into a plastic tote and use a shop vac to blow off the chaff. You can use anything that blows air, even a hair dryer set on no heat air only. You’ll have to hold the tote and aim the airflow just right and the chaff will blow off while the seeds stay in the tote. If you do this, wear a dust mask and eye protection because chaff blows everywhere. Also, don’t be too aggresive with the airflow at first, or you’ll blow off the beans. You have to tilt and aim just right yo blow the chaff without blowing off the seeds.

Another technique that I use on smaller quantities is to pit the chaff/beans on a baking sheet. Put them all pushed to one side. Slightly tilt the sheet and tap/shake. Little by little the beans will separate from the chaff and roll to the downhill side.

Good luck! :v:

Flashback to college. Using a baking tray, album, anything tray like, to de-seed the junk we were buying… LOL. “Tilt n Tap” and they all roll down

edit: also had a technique using a credit card. Push the shake back up to the top of the tray and “lift” it to try to move that shake to the back of the pile. A TON of seeds would roll out (you need a little more tilt for this method).

Also, be sure to let the beans dry well before you put them in a container. Let them dry for an extra couple of weeks after you separate them. Just put them in a paper bag in a cool, dark, dry place. If you package them right away before drying well, they can spoil.

Excellent point, and many make this mistake.

Once separated, put in a paper bag somewhere you won’t forget about em and leave em a few weeks. Heat is your enemy here so don’t put on top of fridge, etc. Perhaps a desk drawer?

I’m glad I asked! I’ll take the advice to harvest the rest of the plant today or tomorrow. I’ll leave the seeds on for a bit longer

Do you squeeze test them all? I tested the one that fell out an it didn’t break  I’m excited to test some to see what I get

Oh HELL no! Random one here or there, if ones mature, the rest are close.

I got like 2000 seeds from my black cream pollenation, you think I squoze (LOL forget what movie thats from) them all?

As I can see myself sitting there squeezing each one, I don’t knooooow maybe it’s your thing
