Hittin' the highminwin road.. my first grow!

you og’ers are a sweet, beautiful bunch.

it certainly seems to be, lime. i don’t even claim to know all that well, having only dealt with real loss not that long ago. i know there aren’t any words to replace the loss of a loved one, especially of a mother, or to heal over the hurt. and i know it’s impossible for any of us to know what she really meant to you… all of the times and experiences you shared with her, that was your special connection. but it was heart warming just to have friends reach out and care when i had lost a dear friend of my own who was like a brother and a father to me.

there were days where i didn’t wanna fucking smile and i wasn’t gonna. life was just miserable at certain points and it felt pretty damn good to cry my eyes out. but we’re creatures of light and we’re growers and healers. and just like these plants that we tend to, who want to just live and thrive, that’s the impulse that keeps on beating in us. even if our roots are torn from us, we slowly rebuild and heal and nourish, until we can be strong again.

you say you’re not great at communicating, lime. i know i was pretty shit when i was grieving, so you ain’t gotta say much at all. these words that we share with you, myself and the other overgrowers, it’s us sharing our love with you, because love heals.

but i know it takes time.

Nice work Min! Everything is looking nice and lush. Seems like you definitely hit the pheno lotto on those durbs and Cindy’s(don’t even get me started on the Trop gorilla over there!). Nice and tight node structure, big ole solar panel fan leaves. Pulling up a seat for the show!

i just got a banana ffj going yesterday, but i’ll for sure start a labs mix going this week. i read a link somewhere that labs can help increase bud and trichome production. if that’s the case, i’ll be a happy camper! my plants have just started going into flower, so hopefully that’ll be enough time to get the labs ready and going. i’ve already got my mango ffj, which i’ll be foliar spraying with at some point. i sampled some the other day and it was surprisingly tasty!

hey there @LivingBlackSoil, thanks for stopping in! i am lightly mulching right now, any cover crop that happens to come up or any extra leaves i’m taking off, although defol is super light right now as they’re not huge monsters and i’m not super juicing them as of yet (no compost teas, sst’s, fulvic or humic additives).

i wasn’t going to cover the eb or do any bokashi or anything like that just yet. i figure my new soil, top dressing and supplemented waterings will hopefully carry me through my first grow for now. i will definitely start to expand my repertoire, but this is what i’ve been able to absorb and implement for now.

the individual containers right now i find i’m watering them every other day, although durban 1 seems to want more which makes sense as he’s the biggest in the individual containers. i’ve switched to more plain waterings with them now, when before i had been adding kelp, aloe, powdered coconut, agsil, and some mycos powder. i figure i’m flipping them to flower, i’ve been giving them a lot, and their leaves are very dark green. so i’m going lighter with their feed.

the earthbox junior i used to just give plain water through the reservoir, but now i’ve been adding the same amendments i used for the containers. i’ll generally wait a day or so after the reservoir dries up before i water the eb jr again.

i do have a second light panel i picked up recently. i was planning on using that for the second level in my tent whenever i’m able to add that. i also have some led strip lights that i’m thinking of adding as my plants get further along in flower. it might help or it might be overkill, i’m not sure. but it could be good side lighting. we’ll see.

what is this $25 120w quantum board you’re talking about though? i’m sure there are other overgrowers who would love to know! that’s damn cheap. have you had experience with it?

thanks for the compliments @Pawsfodocaws! i actually just ordered some 2-gallon and 3-gallon tall fabric bags. my plants are showing sex now and i’m thinking of killing off one or two of the males, which will give me a little more room. and other growers have mentioned that the 1gallons i have them in will be tough going, so i found some tall bags which will hopefully conserve my precious floor space while giving them more soil.

i’ll have to come check out your grow, as i would love to see more small container grows in order to better learn.

thanks @boomer! i feel like durban 1 and tropical 3 are definitely some shining stars, but i’ve read that you never really know until you taste that smoke. i’m starting to see sex in my plants now, so that’s got my mind working on what i want to keep and how i might work the plants i have. it’s an exciting time right now as the possibilities unfold in front of me.

i do feel like ac infinity should be given a good bit of credit, as the equipment has been top notch. the light panel is fantastic and how the whole kit works together is pretty awesome. it has made growing and maintenance a lot easier than if i’d just piece-mealed all of my parts together. now if only that damn fan oscillated, it would be a near perfect package!

alright class, it’s time for me to learn about the birds and the bees of my plants. so let’s line 'em up and get ready to show you their unmentionables, which we’re gonna mention a lot. i’ll show photos first and then talk about them.

durban 1, my favorite from the beginning of this grow until tropical 3 took over. i had a suspicion from early on that durban 1 was a male and it seems that suspicion might have been right. yay! i name him tao.

i will absolutely keep this plant as his growth and vigor from the very beginning has been the best of the bunch, even though he’s only in a small 1 gallon container. i would love to see him grown in an earthbox, or at least in my future grows as i gain more experience.

he will hopefully make babies who reach for the skies. i mean, can you imagine him and tropical 3 together? not that tropical 3 has shown sex yet, but i hope (and i have a feeling) that tropical 3 is a she.

durban 2 looks like a male. i like his bushy growth right now, but he’s probably getting the chop.

my biggest interest is in sativas and he shows no great sativa-ness to gain leniency. and i need room in my tent! i might grow him a little larger so i can harvest the leaves and whatnot for a fermented plant juice (fpj).

durban 3 is a lady, yes!

she used to be a runt, but has now really come back and spread her leaves. i’m very excited for her. hopefully when i transplant her to 3 gallons she’ll really splay herself out. she’s probably the third most vigorous after tropical 3 and durban 1.

durban 4 is another lady, awesome!

good growth, but nothing especially exciting.

cindy 1 and 2, the siblings are sisters! i think. i figure the possible male part on cindy 2 will work itself out in a few more days and one of them white hairs will shoot out.

cindy 2 is showing a little better growth than cindy 1, but she does have a touch more soil in her container than cindy 1 does. otherwise, i’ve always felt like they were very close siblings, so it’s nice to see them same sexing.

this is an interesting one. cindy 3 is likely a male. if that’s the case, do i keep him or toss him? he’s rather small, short, and bushy, so is he even worth preserving?

honestly, that’s sort of what i like about him. he’s showing nice narrow leaves, indicative of a more sativa leaning plant. so if he flowers in 8-10 weeks, that would be an interesting combination to be able to pass on… sativa, short small bushy, 8-10 week flower. whether that’s what he actually passes on, well, we’ll have to see.

but i think he’s gonna go in the keep pile for now.

tropical 1 maybe a male? but i’m not quite sure. if tropical 1 is a female, i’ll obviously keep her for the flowers. but if tropical 1 turns out to be a male? well, most likely he’ll get the chop.

so let’s just consider him a male for now. i love his strong growth, even if it’s not tall. he’s always been quite happy about things, even as i’m trying to figure out watering and environment. no real complaints. the stem rub makes me think “weed”. perhaps it would be better to have a hybrid type plant which i can breed with?

meh. i don’t think the outlook is good for tropical 1 if he’s a male.

as for tropical 2 and 3, it seems like it’s still a little early for them (they are a week behind all of the others). i’m almost hoping tropical 2 is a male so i can happily chop him down and give tropical 3 run of the earthbox junior. and i am definitely hoping tropical 3 is a female, because she is just going gangbusters right now and her structure is very neat and pretty. i couldn’t ask for more from a plant, except some killer smoke.

time will tell…

The 50% off code: DA7HXK2R

Can’t speak to how well the light works. Sitting on 660w in boxes, no need for more at this time so we haven’t picked 1 up. Hope this helps someone. Peace.

Edit: Love your detailed reporting, thank you.

the last one is female and the one where you have male? female is definitely female. The rest are correct, for sure.

Thanks for sharing that, I’ve been contemplating a different light for my veg chamber and this price point was an easy sell!

@highminwin Plants are looking great and I’m really digging your style with the documenting process, great pics! :+1:

Wow bro! I feel like I only looked away for a week and u had a nice lil splosion in that time, plants are looking amazing and very lush and green, keep up the good work bud!!

Doing a wonderful job being able to identify gender at the 4-6 week mark too, I think ur getting things dialed in in no time, looking forward to big things for ya with bountiful harvests

Now that u can see which are ur ladies might be time to let em graduate to some more root space if u can find room for some 2 or 3 gallon.

The 2 gallon from gardzen are just as wide as as the 3 gallon just not as tall so may be beneficial for your height concerns

has it only been three days since i last posted? it feels like so much longer! busy week at work and my schedule has gone totally whacko ever since i started my grow, so i think this has made me feel more exhausted overall. also the other day i transplanted a lot of the individual container plants (which was a surprising amount of work!) and i felt pretty beat up the next day. these are small plants still, so why did it feel like i helped a buddy move out of their apartment? regardless, i’m happy i did it and now my tent is becoming a veritable jungle.

lets take a look at two comparison pictures. the first from 5/29 just this past sunday. i’ll call this roughly the first day of flower after 5 1/2 weeks of veg. i had been ramping the light schedule from 18/6 to 12/12 over the past few days, so the first day of flower might’ve been saturday or monday according to the plants, as i had noticed sex traits on some of the plants earlier.

i got some new axial 1751 fans from ac infinity hanging in the tent using rope and those light hangar clips. they’re super quiet, although now that i think about it maybe i should have just bought the non-oscillating ac infinity clip-on fans. those are also quiet and probably would have been a little cheaper or about the same price as these axial fans. i dunno, i figure this way i can move the fans around as needed and not be relegated to the corners. i’ll have to see how useful this is in the long run.

in this photo i’d say the taller plants in the individual containers are about 12" in height, with durban 1 (tao) a little taller. the shorter plants are maybe 8"-10". things look clean and presentable still.

now lets take a look at things from early this morning (so five days after the previous photo).

it’s almost like someone took my plants and replaced them with newer bigger and better plants. i almost can’t believe the growth. granted most of these plants are now in 3 gallon tall fabric pots, which adds to their overall height. but they have definitely gained some actual plant inches in the intervening days. i’m a proud papa, but my tent is now definitely overcrowded, which y’all had warned me about. at least now many of my plants are taller than tropical 3, giving her something to strive for again.

fortunately i have a friend who will take two plants off my hands and i’m trying to figure things out for maybe one more plant.

i also picked up an aloe plant from the supermarket. it was super cheap and i figured it’d be nice to have fresh aloe. i just need to move it outside into some sunlight, but until then, it’s gotta snuggle up in a corner.

after putting it in the tent, i thought about pests that might be hiding out in the aloe container, so i sprayed the aloe and nearby plants with neem oil. no infestations yet, fingers crossed! also no pests (yet?) from the worm castings that i had top dressed with last week, so i’m happy about that as well. although i did have to add some pumice and potting soil to the castings, as they were too dense when watered. i’ll see if i can write up a post about that after some other updates.

Aloe makes for a great cloning agent.

ahh, excellent. i have indeed heard about this. i have some cuttings i took of my durban 1 last night that are sitting in some aloe water right now. i wasn’t planning on taking any clones, but i was trimming it anyways so i thought i may as well practice.

if they don’t root i will try this technique, with sticking the cutting directly into the aloe leaf. thank you for sharing, i especially love seeing the photo! so cool.

I have great success with using aloe as a rooting agent I tend to get roots in about 10-14 days with just applying some once cut then sticking in a cup or bottle of water till rooted @highminwin

new group family photos now that most of the plants have been transplanted into what i presume will be their final pots.

these 3 gallon tall fabric pots will give me bigger plants than i had anticipated, but as long as i can clear out a few plants, my tent should still be relatively manageable. i honestly wasn’t even going to go this big, but @AzSeaindooin420 suggested a minimum of 3gallons and he is definitely my grower goals, so i’m gonna try it out for now.

the tropicals are looking like a nice family, with tropical 3 still being a heavenly beast. i’ve stopped training her main branch because now a lot of the other plants are taller than she is, so i’ll just let her go. i still love how her secondary branches form a nice halo underneath and around her main branch.

it seems like @JoeCrowe and @DesertHeartGardens were right about tropical 1, she’s a female! good eyes, guys.

tropical 2 and tropical 3 (both in the earthbox junior) are about a week behind the rest of the grow, so they’re still a little premature. but tropical 3 seems to definitely be a female (yay yay yay!!!) while tropical 2 is likely a male.

i would be quite happy to chop tropical 2 in order to give tropical 3 run of the earthbox jr, unless anyone sees anything about tropical 2 that should be saved? i just pray to the smoke gods that her smoke will be beautiful.

the cindys… cindy 1 and cindy 2 are the sisters while cindy 3 is the scraggly little runty brother. is he the real cinderella, slaving away cleaning the stables while his spoiled sisters get to go to the royal ball? well, i’m planning to keep cindy 3 around to grow him out and see if there’s anything special hidden away in there. like i said before, i like his short bushy nature, and combined with his narrow thin leaves, if he finishes in 8-10 weeks, those could be very nice traits to pass along.

cindy 3 is in a 2 gallon tall bag because i originally thought to keep my males in smaller containers so they wouldn’t grow as large (and i also only ordered six of the 3 gallon tall ones). but after transplanting cindy 3, i decided the 2 gallons are too tight for any other transplants even though these bags have a velcro side i can open. i have ordered more 3 gallon tall bags.

the durbans… durban 1 is awaiting a 3 gallon tall bag. the rest are (mostly) happy in their new containers. durban 2 and durban 4 were the first transplants, so they may have been rough-handed.

we can see durban 1 still towers over his siblings from soil to top.

i have been wondering if i should place my males back into veg now that i know they’re males. perhaps a slow veg in a separate isolated space.

Your scope is very nice and clear, did you post a link to that earlier in the thread? I would be interested to see :hugs:

The males, if you need space? Could cut clones and then chop them down into compost or your smoothies, and then regrow the cuttings into bonsai fathers so they will be ready to place into flower whenever you need, or you could put them into a really tiny space to flower out, like a single CFL, desk lamp, and put them in a cupboard or under a sink and you don’t even need to be exact with the schedule, as males release really early in flower :sunglasses:

it’s a clip-on macro lens for smart phones made by apexel (the 12x / 24x macro lens), which i use on my iphone 13 mini. i’m a big fan of it and i agree that the photos from it are very nice and clear.

it’s surprisingly cheap (~$25), small, portable, and easy to use. it comes with a plastic light diffuser, but i find that piece just gets in the way, so i’ve removed that. and i also only really use it in the 12x lens mode, since the 24x is pretty extreme. i do find that i have to remove my phone case in order to get the best quality (otherwise the image is a little fuzzier), but it’s easy enough to slip my phone case off.

you can find it on amazon here…

(edit to add: it looks like i actually purchased this on ebay, where it’s only $13 with free shipping. a much better deal)

it looks like they also have a 200x clip-on lens. i might have to pick that up sometime to check it out.

although i think for the really sexy photos, i’ve been considering picking up an objective lens, like the mitutoyo 5x-20x objective lens. i’ve seen some KILLER trichome shots using that lens, but it’s like $500-700. here’s a review…

i was a professional photographer for a number of years, so getting great shots of these cannabis plants is definitely something i’m interested in pursuing.

awesome, thanks very much for this rundown on options for the males. it definitely helps me think about possibilities.

if i could ask some more questions (and others feel free to comment as well)…

  • is there any point to growing out a male in the same way as a female? what i mean is that we generally want big monster females (if possible) in order to maximize yield of the flowers. is there a reason to grow monster males?

  • do you think a small male plant’s pollen is just as good, strong, and healthy as if you had grown the male plant larger? again, i suppose the question is whether there’s a point to growing a bigger male.
