A lot of it, I try to stay out of. I honestly have no idea the race nor ethnicity of the mods.
I wouldn’t mind some political discussions, especially where they overlap with the specific stated interests of the forum. Unfortunately, I think a lot of people are losing the capability to rationally and logically discuss politics using well researched facts.
I do still think it would be nice to see flagged posts before they are reviewed. Firstly, sometimes I agree with the post and don’t even understand why it was flagged. This is stifling discussions unnecessarily. But also, when the flag is legitimate, I’d like to be aware of specific members that are rude, aggressive, etc towards the rest of the community. I think it’s a disservice to hide such information from those people who want to peel back the covers. Obviously moderators would still review and ultimately permanently remove these sorts of posts, so it would just be a short window.
The only scenario this stumbles is in the very rare case of doxxing. Of course I wouldn’t want mine or anyone’s information to get blasted out there… just my thoughts.
It’s an anti people thing or at least feels that way with how it was laid out. Pretty tired of some making everything about their particular racial origins. Not just on OG, but everywhere. Not a fan of coming into a community thread, being scolded for something I didn’t even see and told I must do better. Who are the MODS? Are they Black, White, Hispanic, Jewish? Fact is, I never thought to ask as I could not care less. Should the Moderator team be forced to show their color in their profile? Should we make sure we have a mod from every background on the planet so we make sure all feel represented? Why can’t I, as a white guy, feel represented by a black man? He is a man the same as me? What about if it’s a woman, I would still feel represented as it’s another human being, like I am. Perhaps it’s my upbringing or something to do with growing up in Canada, but I see the world in a different light than some apparently. I feel represented fine by the MOD’s as long as they treat me respectfully as they always have. That’s what’s important to me, not the geographic origins of their ancestors. Their job has nothing to do with race but is about enforcing site rules for all fairly, no matter their background or origins.
Now I have interacted with folks on OG from all over the world and I am quite happy about that. When I was young my father did the same thing but used a CB radio. Now I can be even more engaged with my brothers and sisters around the world through the internet and that’s pretty dam cool. While I respect that everyone here has had different experiences in life and have faced things I have not, I will not be lumped into a giant group by default and scolded to do better like some kind of toddler. If someone finds something I say offensive, feel free to call me out. I am open to discuss and even learn from things. But don’t just throw a blanket statement out there that lumps all people into one group and stand over them telling them all to do better. That’s just not cool.
Showing someone a burning cross for example may have no effect on you but it could have a very different effect on someone else. Historical context matters.
Exactly. Blanket removal of swastika’s would be offensive to Jainists and Buddhists everywhere. I prefer not to erase any reference to a generally positive symbol, just because one not-so-savory bozo chose to appropriate and demean it, nor because there are people who failed to see the bigger picture beyond their highly biased western-media-centric education
It’s was the literal nazi flag, not a swastika being used in the context you describe. And to describe the Nazis as “1 bozo” is, well, incredibly ignorant.
A black person complaining about white ones is not comparable with a white person complaining about black ones. They’re not doing it from the same position nor for the same reasons.
That’s the usual reaction when one is not concerned by racism. Pretty easy to throw out the subject and jump on another one. For someone that has to experience it everyday, it’s not the same. If we want to end racism we have to listen to them and adjust.
Well, their “job” has to do with avoiding racism then at least.
Personally this whole fiasco has been rather eye opening. From now on I will be sticking to my friends threads and mine. After tthe get together on the the 19th I doubt I will be posting here at all.
Grow Hard OG!
It’s the opposite of an “anti-people” thing IMO
It’s literally about trying to broaden the perspective instead of trying to keep anyone out
Who scolded you? I missed that
If this is in response to me, then I don’t understand how the things I said would be taken personally against you
Seems tempers are rising methinks
I’m pretty sure this is the exact opposite point of the conversation on why representation is important. And I learned today that this is not the place for that conversation.
When did I ever do this?
, this is why different perspectives matter
It’s not about race, it’s about lived experiences
Luckily the swastika as a religious symbol is different than the swastika used on the nazi flag
But when it’s in the middle of a big red rectangle it kinda loses any connotation of being Buddhist or Jewish
Flagging doesn’t imply automatic hiding of the post.
This is from the documentation:
When a flag is submitted, Discourse prioritizes it based on several factors:
Flag type and any extra priorities set
Number of flags on the content
Flagging accuracy of the user(s) who flagged the post
Trust levels of the user(s) who flagged the post
Whether staff members flagged the post
So, the system is actually pretty clever. Usually more than one member needs to flag for the software to take an action automatically (e.g. hide a post).
It also means that the hiding ability of those who flag just for fun will diminish over time because their flagging accuracy will reach zero :).
Based on recent events, I’ve set the sensitivity (i.e., the chance of a post being hidden as a result) to the lowest settings, so you should see it for longer."
Question: is the person doing the flagging known to everyone? That way they have to account for there actions, that way they can’t hide anonymously. Kinda like what @Foreigner was talkin bout
