The oriental Herbal Nutrient (OHN )is a very important input
in Natural Farming. It is made from herbs which are full of
energy and function to increase plant robustness, to sterilize
and keep plants warm. OHN revitalizes crops and activates
their growth. It is made from popular oriental herbs such as
Angelica, Acutiloba, Licorice and Cinnamon that are
fermented, not boiled, to maintain the vigorous growth of
crops.
How to make OHN
Items needed:
Cinnamon, | Wood stick | Angelica root (makes it better)
Garlic | Beer | Licorice root (makes it better)
Ginger | Sugar
Glass jars | Vodka (for large batches)
Part One: Dry Ingredients
Chop cinnamon sticks and roots into 1/4 inch pieces and put in a glass jar (if using angelica you fill two jars with it and one of everything else)
Pour beer over the dry ingredients up to 1/2-2/3 full and let soak for a day or two
Add sugar 1:1 of the weight of beer and dry ingredients. should be 2/3-Full now.
cover with loose lid or breathable cloth and rubberband and let ferment 2 weeks
stir with wood stick every single morning for the 2 weeks.
strain 1/3 of the jar and add more sugar to extract again ( do this up to 3 times while collecting the 1/3 you poured off in separate jars ex. the cinnamon ohn goes into a separate jar then the angelica.)
if making large batches that go longer then 45 days fill the final storage jars 2/3 with OHN and 1/3 with vodka and it lasts many years.
Part Two: Fresh Ingredients
Crush or slice the garlic and ginger in separate jars.(dont crush it to a mush unless you dont care about straining it)
Add 1:1 sugar:garlic/ginger so jar is about 2/3 full (2/3 full is the best space for the best fermentation) and cover with loose lid or breathable cloth and rubber band. leave for up to a week.
Stir with wood every day for another week with a tight lid on it.
Filter into separate jars fill 2/3 with OHN and 1/3 vodka for large batches lasting longer then 45 days.
If added vodka product is good for many years
you should now have 6 jars. ginger, garlic, 2 angelica, cinnamon, and licorice.
you can mix them all now if you want but i prefer to mix them when i am about to use them
To mix ohn you mix 2 parts angelica and 1 part everything else 2:1:1:1:1
to dilute for the garden use a 1:1000 or 2:1:1:1:1:1000
after the OHN has been stored for over a year its a lot stronger so dilute at a ratio of 2:1:1:1:1:2000
HOW TO USE OHN
OHN is used for making IMO - 3, IMO - 4, the soil treatment
solution, and the seed treatment solution.
OHN is also good for all of the growth periods of crops,
Nutritional growth period, Change-over period and
Reproductive growth period. OHN is always used in Natural
Farming.
WHEN AND HOW TO USE OHN
Throughout the Nutritive Cycle. OHN is considered a very
important input in Natural Farming and can be used
throughout the early, vegetative, changeover and fruiting or
reproductive stages at the basic dilution ratio of 1: 500 to 1000
times in water.
WHEN CROPS ARE WEAKENED
To reinvigorate weakened crops, a mixture of OHN (1:1000)
with FPJ (1:500) and BRV (1:500) can be applied. For plants
with soft rot or anthracnose, WCA (1:1000) is added to the
mixture
These are 1l jars. You can make smaller amounts to fit in smaller jars forsure:) i usualy fill mine as close to top as possible. I didnt even fill these 1l jars with the amount i used:)
You mix them all in the end. I keep them seperate untill i go to foliar or drench. The licorice and garlic seem to lend some flavor to your buds so i hold off on them halfway through flower. Unless you have some garlic breath bud growing! Hahahaha
@lotus710 I have a quick question on the OHN making process…
During the initial 2 week daily stirring is the OHN ready to be used?
Meaning, as I stir and remove the stick a bit drips off and if I collect
a ml or so of each for use once or twice a week is it effective? Or is
it too ‘raw’ yet to use?
Good to know, wasn’t sure. I did taste each of them after adding the
vodka. That garlic has some staying power…
Verifying Use: You add equal amounts (except angelica if using it)
together into a more short term use container (say a dozen doses)
and then shake that up and measure out the amount needed for
the feeding.
You can say that again, I accidentally left a little in my strainer and when I later strained some Green Dragon tincture the garlic smell/taste transfered to it. Nearly ruined it, luckily I used it for some Chex mix which covered it up. The lemon drop hard candy got tossed though.
Two week update:
Cinnamon • Ginger • Garlic
The Cinnamon didn’t want to stay in the jar, it had a smaller
mouth opening than the other two and for some reason liked
crawling up and over the rim.
The garlic ended up at a lower level than the others when they
all started the same. VERY strong smelling and ended up putting
it under a cardboard box to keep it contained.
Ginger was the cleanest and filtered almost as fast as poured.
Found some old empty Kahlúa bottles in the basement that
were stockpiled from DIY booze project. Big, Brown, Glass,
all the long storage criteria met.
Have a small blue tinture bottle that holds 10ml of each to
keep handy for current usage.
Put back 1/3 as directed, topped off with fresh vodka to do
the next level of extraction. Will probably stop at this point
as it’s more than I’ll use far into next year.
