So these seed companies are not breeding their own strains? One breeder works for more than one company? Makes good sense business wise, but I can see now why many strains are so similar. This is why I am finding my own keeper plants from my own selections. To be different.

So these are my initial thoughts…regarding this “penny haze”:
Hypothetically, I get the Old Timers Haze and then another haze is chosen to cross it to, which I then run to f2. At this point someone sends me another haze and I send the f2 to them. Both parties run the line to f2 and then a third and forth breeder contributes 2 more strains and the chain continues as such.
For each grower it could turn into a perpetual breeding project with multiple side Lines…

I’m sure a lot do there own breeding but there are many who don’t and purchase in bulk from others.
There was a guy in the bay are who sold seeds for $1 each with a min order amount, he also had entire breedings for sale that he had not released any of.
I’m not sure about now but ten years ago he was providing seeds to at least six different people who repacked them and sold them in 10 packs.

Not trying to hijack but this is something I’ve wondered about . The Original Haze line including it’s variations if it’s not true breeding & only 10% are magic how do you insure that progeny are magic also ? Even worked lines like OTH & THH don’t spit out magic that often . I can see that adding other sativas would help stabilize .

Adding sativa’s into haze lines…seems kinda tricky…
…I believe there actually used to be a formula or something…add just a little sativa, haha just a pinch…or not at all…

He had been at it awhile and had a large list everything from old heirlooms to new type hybrids.
I got a lot from him myself, he would f2 a lot of back then hard to get Canadian/euro/Dutch strains. Basically he was a very early seed collector and when California went medical saw a opportunity to turn his garage into a bean factory, started popping a pack at a time to do large reproductions while crossing it to the current medical clones available so there was a new variety every 2-3 months and a ton of crosses.

The main ones I remember from when I looked at the list were White Russian, jack .h , yoda og, cantaloupe haze, red hair sensi, old school hashplant,
Herijauna, blueberry, bubblegum, oaxacan, Panama red, a bunch of sensi seeds great and a bunch of crosses to grape ape, granddaddy purple , gg4 and the likes.

Are these lines with seeds taken from clones, or breeding projects?

Seed lines and crosses to clones depending on the variety, the first 11 I listed are seed lines that he sourced from various location, he had to much stuff to lump any of it into one category.

That pretty cool imo…it always a fantasy thinking of what someone else could have cooked up in their back basement!
As a side note, this should probably be in the haze thread, but since we are talking about breeding haze I think it’s appropriate to bring up.
Haze from Sam the Skunk Man 2 types: Sam’s original Haze and Tom Hills Haze. Toms Haze remaining, to this day a single haze line. Sam’s haze having been worked into many lines. So in breeding haze, I fell it’s important to keep this in mind.

I grew out some mango haze from mr.nice years ago and had one crazy hazy pheno. Had to bend it in half mid flower and it ended up taking up its own 4x4 space. I wanna say it flowered for like 12-13 weeks. Huge colas of pure foxtail fluff. Was some truly great and special flower. I’ve been out of the scene for awhile I don’t even know if he’s still making seeds.

My ldea was to use more landraces than hazes maybe some asian sativas from zomia and African,south American,SOUTH WEST PACIFIC OCEAN and PHILIPPINES from tlt. Some from ace, @Wuachuma named a couple others. Been looking at zomias thai’s any one grow anything from zomia?
