Always wondered what it would be like to do a pheno hunt in small containers like this… Will be following along.

I’ve heard breeders talk about the fact that plants won’t fully express themselves in pots roughly smaller than a few gallons. I’m sure you will still get a good enough expression from the plants but have you considered this at all or are you at all concerned?

@NorthNorthNugs
I’ve considered this. Part of the issue is I keep blowing money on seeds and not on promix or the equivalent. And I didn’t re-acquire the numerous amount of smart pots i owned until recently.

So really, you’re right. But the other issue is how do I run near to 100 plants under 2 lights? Solo cups can accomodate that and show me limited expression, and I can try and see how that works out this time and maybe not do it anymore, or try and improve it.

For example I could get an aquavalve and huge tray and set it up to autowater the solo cups and I think that would help a lot as long as I flipped them fast enough. Right now I’m not doing well because I’m still waiting on my pollen to ship, I wanted to flip the plants like 2 weeks ago.

Ever think of just doing 12 n 12 from seed?
It works pretty decent for me, but I start will seedling pots, then .7 gal, till they show sex then into 2 gal pots, but 12 n 12 from start to finish would probably work well in solos

I would after I adjust my environment and dial everything in. Right now it’s all a little wonky.

Fair enough bud. Nothing wrong with experimenting at all! I’m all about experimenting and we can all learn from a thread like this (unless you’ve done this before). Definitely interested to see how this works bc I have a small indoor grow space and wayyyyyy too many seeds to pop. Trying to figure out how I can personally hunt/pollen chuck in a limited space with success.

Depression. Been battling it. Got a ph pen for cheap, been phing my water down to 6.2 or 6.3 with lemon juice. Got an easy2go kit from autopot but need a tray for it. Need to transplant my plants.

Depression isn’t easy but I’m still going. Thank you @Calix

I am using solos and slightly larger for amateur breeding. I agree its far more important to see as many plants bud as possible. Besides if you grow a plant inside in a 20 gallon pot its still going to behave quite differently outdoors. But if it gets frosty, stinky, sticky, with fast budding in a solo, I bet it will in the other situations too.

After finding some seriously stinky males, I’m on board with stem rubbing. Just know that rubbing that stem removes trichomes and potential for future smell(don’t do it every day). So to get a fair comparison I waited until there were decent flower clusters going before I rubbed anything. Many of them hardly smelled at all. Which made it even more dramatic finding really stinky ones.

They say inbred depression happens pretty quickly with repeated 1 to 1 breeding. Which is ok for people that just want to make more hybrids later. But it is something to be aware of depending on your goals.

I really appreciate that you asked me how my grow was going, again.

I struggle with depression on and off but I never want to give up on my grow. I transplanted a lot of plants today and made a fresh batch of soil to transplant more tomorrow. I’ll probably post a picture when it’s all said and done. My oldest plants definitely don’t look good but I’m trying, and that’s what counts.

Bit of a mini update.

Transplanting all the plants, or majority, to 1 gallons still.

Trying to do good with all my plants, but might need to kill some or some are dying. It’s unfortunate but some harsh lessons learned here… Don’t wait too long to flip or transplant.

Started some BMX seeds from BIF aka Brothers In Farms. 6 of them are sprouted.
Big Mac = Mac and cheese crossed with Banana Punch
BMX = Big mac x Mac and cheese

Next up is Lavender Frosting. Excited about that one. Will wait to get my grow under control first.

Revegging a bunch of plants. Made a bunch of seeds with the BMX male and a mystery funk male and some possibly viable forum pollen.

Learned a lot from my solo cup pheno hunt.

  1. dont get rootbound
  2. feeding is hard
  3. dont underwater, dont overwater
  4. my ph was 7.3 out of the tap
  5. ph lockout over christmas killed a bunch of plants
  6. dont overwater, dont underwater
  7. dont wait on pollen from internet people
  8. sour dragons breath from 7 east is frosty as hell
  9. i had bruce banner from ethos all along oops
  10. making seeds is fun but hard
  11. smoking seeded weed is hard in some cases
  12. get stakes
  13. i forgot, i smoked too much weed
  14. take care of your plants and learn from your mistakes

i germinated koffee f6 x chocolate chunk from @Berserker7205
lavender jack x vanilla frosting from @WeTokeChronic
