Animals are smart dude, I love hunting season because I get to just watch a ton of different animals.

I sometimes turn on the TV to the squirrel vision channel to watch them eat. It’s nuts.

Have turtles demonstrated the ability to self medicate?

I really don’t have a clear answer to that. But the question is actually quite interesting in itself. Do turtles seek certain foods to change their body chemistry? I’m unsure if that’s been studied but it’s a really cool scientific question.

Some animals know what to eat based on chemical signals and cues, smells, etc etc. I am not too sure about turtles specifically.

I agree. I’ve never taken a survival course but I’ve read that humans retain some of that capability. Apparently plants that are bitter to us tend to be unhealthy.
