Lettuce plants... systemic virus?

Crazy enough, I have been able to create a condition that makes it show it’s head, and have used it for about 10 years now to rule out genetics that already carry the disease.

It’s one of those things I hold close like how I can produce 5GPW from LED tech.

I do try and help other growers out and give tons of free info. Some of it though is going to cost money down the road to someone on the same page and more interested in a quality product over the current industry standard which is a lot of garbage.

I was for 20 years and left in 2006 basically months before the rules changed. My entire family outside of my wife live there still.

If I torture my Cookies Kush clone, the leaves do an unhealthy yellow-green mosaic pattern. 3/5 of the CK plants I grew did it.

I was never 100% sure TMV-marijuana crossover was real. Meanwhile, here I am holding a clone that probably has it.
Good thread, gents. Thanks LED_Seedz.

I even have a theory that it can be carried by insects that suck the leaves on plants like spider mites, thrips and other bugs. Not even looked in years to see if there have been any real studies lately. Not like ole Uncle Sam spent much money on research until the tax payers starting lining their pockets.

It’s been real a long time, but it wasn’t until fairly recently that plants were tested and shown to carry it.

First carrier I ever saw it on was “Chems Sister” then again a couple of years later on a Dead Chemdog which was a cross of the original Chem to Deadhead OG. Last time I saw it was on the original real deal GG#4, and I saw 5 or 6 other people grow it just fine. I ran it in my test room and made it turn within weeks of the flip.

One thing about it when a plant has it you can smell it right off, and it always smells the same on every strain. There have been times I have said no way this plant looks perfect, but it has that smell and sure as shit your bummed.

Another sure tell sign is you’ll have perfect leaves everywhere, and then here and there you get these twisting tips. It’s why a lot of people think they have Broad mites because it does look sort of similar.

How would you describe the smell?

That’s a tough one. Maybe like old weed that was put away a lil damp and got that musty kind of thing? The flavor I would image something like oak leaves burning. Real harsh and nasty.

I can tell you I know the smell every time I have encountered it.

i was convinced i had tmv (thread here) but it wasn’t transferring to my other plants and when i increased feed by 100% for that plant all symptoms went away… could have been a PH problem which was corrected by the increased feed or maybe some deficiency

you can buy test kits which detects a variety of viruses from the tobamovirus group including sunn-hemp mosaic virus, i have never seen a case of suspected TMV actually test positive while researching during my previous scare, but only saw maybe 5 or 6 people that actually tested

OK now you guys are really starting to scare me. My suspected “platinum gsc” cuts get those whirled leaves as well. Haven’t seen them in a while but it happens now and again. When they’re more stressed than usual, they start showing up in different spots of the plants.

Can’t say that I’ve seen strange leaf patterns though. But then again I just pull off all the nasty looking leaves and rarely give it a second thought. Chock it up to stress or neglect.

I will be removing all “cookies” from my grow having read this :confounded:

Exactly what I was thinking. They’ve been growing a lot slower over the past couple months too.

I have one that behaves like a champ.

Last thing I need is a vigorous virus though.

I’m wondering if soil solarization could kill it? Say cooking the soil to a depth of 4-5 inches perhaps at temps of 150-165 degrees or so?

Supposedly you can’t kill it. Once it gets into the plant tissue it’s doesn’t die and continues to be transmitted through leave contact, pollen, seeds, and pests. Scary shit

Maybe lmao. But not without completely destroying whatever you growing that has is infected.

Unless something has changed recently, there is no known cure for it.

This may be the fewest likes I have had in a thread.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news.

SamTheSkunkman claims that they can be cleaned up with tissue culture or taking frequent small meristem cuts. Neither of which is an easy task IMO.

Just out of curiosity, can it survive in the soil or does it need a plant host? I’ve also heard you can get it from smoking tobacco in the grow room?

According to a source above, up to 60 years.

That would really screw my time table.

yah we have it to where it will just affect some branchs sometimes… like maybe they were next to a dud that we pulled and caught it on contact. Today at work tmv was no new surprise and they said they suspected it but had testing done and it came back negative. there cure is eradication and they do have a good eye for it early in veg. im starting to get the eye for it. Its not that hard to find when its next to a healthy plant

my co worker was under the same impression that it was carried over from tobacco smokers not the plant
