More likely to be looked down on based on social status/appearance than over race. I’m white but was more vibrant looking if you will(colored mowhawks, lots of piercings etc,) which was where most of my issues came from, well that and homophobes but the later was almost never/only happened in a few specific situations. But no generally from my experience racism wasn’t a huge thing there thankfully. Mainly lived in town tc itself though did live out on old mission peninsula for a minute (was a fun area wish I’d actually known shit about growing back then).

I appreciate the feedback. The TC area is perfect for us so it would bum me out if people there were overtly racist.

I think we’ll be okay. I’ve never been arrested but came close four times. Of those four, three of them were because of racism.

Can’t imagine living somewhere where the majority of pickup drivers are flying big Trump flags.

Ironically jail was where I found the most racism, as well as some of the best examples of coexistence I’ve ever seen. But it’s jail so that’s kinda a given I guess

To be honest, our primary goal is leaving IL for MI. Both are legal states but the rules for growing are night and day apart. In IL, if you are a MMJ cardholder, you can have five plants going, no distinction between seedlings and fully-blooming plant. That limit is for the household in total whereas in MI the limit is 12 plants per person, no license needed.

Illinois is one of the most poorly-run states. Effectively, IL is two states: Chicagoland and Everywhere Else. They have different values and views. The farmers bitch non-stop about Chicagoland ruining their way of life. People in Chicagoland sometimes forget the rest of the state exists.

I think we’ll be happy there.

I think this article describes the situation in Northern Michigan perfectly:

I agree with @Deadinside88 , Traverse, Charlevoix , Bay Harbor/Springs are affluent tourist areas known as the Golden Triangle and the Riviera of the US for a reason. You will often find some of the biggest and most opulent motor yachts of the Great Lakes moored here from Chicago, And up and down the East coast.

In turn the locals know which side their bread gets buttered on and leave their politics and religion at the door when they clock in so I would not worry about any of that overtly.

I mean hell, soon you will be calling US all Fudgies (you will learn the joke, ask anyone) and you will almost be a Youpper.

I’m not sure I want to know what a fudgie is.

Non locals, tourists, etc.

Mackinaw Fudge is what everyone brings home from Va-ca, hence the locals refer to all us visitors as “Fudgies”, anyone from above the Bridge is a “Youpper”

I have heard TC area summer tourists called fudgies before - it’s a term like snowbird is to Florida

I’m from a tiny town in central/southern IL (Go Illini) and now live in SW Michigan, and it is generally much more with the times and less ignorant. You don’t see any rebel flags here…though there are still lifted truck dumb rednecks out in the sticks, sure. Traverse City is a major tourist spot, I can’t imagine it being terribly backwards. I’m sure you’ll like TC, but Grand Rapids/Kalamazoo is much closer to everything and a much larger city. More diverse towns as well, you aren’t going to stand out at all.

There is a huge grow scene, even smaller towns have hydro stores. It is hard to get busted in a legal grow state unless you are doing really dumb shit.

I like it more than Illinois in every way.

There is a pretty big grow scene and little grow stores are everywhere. Totally true. If your in Detroit area I can point you at a couple really nice grow stores like ultragreen hydroponics on telegraph and West Chicago, super knowledgeable staff that can help with any issue. They taught me 75% of what I know, I have spent an ungodly amount of time hanging out in the office talking about growing. Then HTG (any location) for equipment, nutes and soil stuff.

Word travels slowly under bridges.
