Hello community, and hello toasty; to avoid going into too much detail, curious on a couple of different topics related to PE. After reading through this thread you seem knowledgable so I went ahead and created an account hoping you could help.

  1. If the bins where birthed/opened slightly early what would the best way to proceed be? For context if there were very light spots of substrate sporadically lying at the top of the mycelium.
  2. If 6 days later, into the fruiting stage, no pins, which is not super strange. But could/would/should/can be expected? The grower had mild success with the genetics in the past. More context: coco coir/verm/plaster of paris substrate. Spawn was on WBS.
  3. Placing box fan on top of bins and blasting with air once a day for periods between 25/45 mins light mist keeping top of myc wet no pools. realize this is not what most people do but feel like the exponentially stronger air flow goes deeper into the myc; as well as just subjecting myc to more O2. Also most convenient for growers schedule.
More context: grower great success with GT and B+. all genetics from sporeworks.

Some pictures would help.
45 minutes of air seems a bit Extreme and you should have to dial it down.
To hard to tell without seeing the crop.

Took a break while working on a future field and decided to check on a pile of logs that I noticed had some Turkey Tails last spring & found this

with a couple of babies popping out.

Transferred it on top of some Cardboard (That I prepared yesterday for something completely different.) to spawn & increased the favorable conditions.

Paul Stamets was involved in the experiments to find if mycelium could deal with toxic waste.
The really cool part, you might be referring to, starts about halfway through this video.
The results he reported are amazing!

How mushrooms can save the world

Well, a number Mushrooms are a great at Bioremediation.
What I think you’re commenting on a post about trying to figure out which Oyster Mushroom I heard somewhere was the best at this process.
I’ve read his books over the past few decades and the are definitely something every one should check out.

I appreciate your input @TheMightySeaman. Uploaded some pics above hopefully they go through

Look like it’s colonized enough for fruiting.
One of the main triggers for pinning is the evaporation of moisture from the Substrate during an exothermodynamic phase as it converts the nutrients to create the bloom ( The Mushroom can be compared to the a flower & the Mycelium being the plant and root system.). I believe.
That’s why a good fine misting followed by a light fanning for 30-60sec a few times a day is what most grower do.
The fanning afterwards creates that light evaporation from the Mycelium block that aids in triggering pins.
The light misting of the lid (Or, upside down tub is just to keep the Microclimate humidity in phase so the protruding pins don’t dry out before there ready for harvest.
Hope this information helps you figure out what might be the culprit.
I’m in no way an expert, just a newbie myself.

How do you guys inoculate your grain and agar? Are you using glove boxes or what?

Still air box. you dont want glove boxes because they create negative pressure which creates air movement. The key is to not have air movement - unless you’re using a flow hood which works by providing a laminar stream of clean air

I stopped glove and still air boxes after I blew the lids off a couple while wiping down and flame sterilization… I always do mine in the middle of the bathroom with the exhaust fan going on a sterilized surface

Yeah you can do it in open air as long as its clean and still. a SAB just helps minimise the amount of available air that can be moved. I’ve definitely become more lax with sterilisation once I understood and experienced this dynamic

Wow, all great ideas. I’ll definitely change my method. I’m having a hard time inoculation my rye grain. I cannot get things going. I have good uncontaminated syringes from spore works. I done the needle through the center of the lid method and the one where you shoot the culture down the side of the glass and nothing. I think I’m gonna have to go the agar route…

This right here… The less sterile I made conditions while being as sterile as possible in my actions (as fucked as that sounds) was the big difference in my growing success

Hey everyone; have enjoyed reading all these posts. I have 2 questions:

  1. currently in a long fruiting period with my PE. I did not add a casing layer. Should I add one of jiffy mix? started on WBS then coco/verm. 9 days into 'fruiting"
  2. want to start a couple other varieties on same sub. already done GT and B+ want something exotic that yields well. any suggestions?
