All in the name of science! lol i love it!
For freeze drying, do you just put it open on a shelf? Would putting it in a vacuum sealed jar like a food saver help the process with the negative pressure?
low pressure definitely helps the ice sublime, but I’ve never tried it in a vacuum sealed container. If it started out under low pressure in the container, logic says the pressure will further reduce when exposed to cold. Problem is, the vapors have to have somewhere to go. The freezer itself is huge, and can store lots of vapors, also some of them suck the vapors out every time you open and close the door. The vapor sucking ones would probably work faster. Yah I just take the hash and you want it in tiny bits not a big chunk, then leave it on a piece of parchment paper in the freezer to dry. A huge lump of hash will take forever… or a hundred years, to freeze dry. This batch I just left it in the bubble bag to freeze dry - you can do that as well for a small bit of hash. Remember…large chunks will not dry out in your lifetime. OK perhaps that’s an exaggeration.
ok I worked up some values, we’ll see!
freeze dried: color +1, speed +1, melt +1, texture +1 = 4
quick dried: color +1, speed +1, melt 0, texture +1 = 3
shelf dried: color 0, speed 0, melt +1, texture +1 = 2
The freeze dried hash is ready to rip pretty quick, like 24 hours, you don’t have to have it in there a week like I did. Also it did seem like the melt on the quick dried hash wasn’t as good. For that test I heated a wire in the flame of a torch until it was orange. Then I let it cool just a tiny bit as I brought it over to the sample. Once in contact with the sample, I see how much is transformed into a liquid goo that sticks to the wire. The freeze dried hash was liquid as soon as the wire got near it lol!
ahem…well I was sitting there after I read so much about making rosin. I was like hmm this calls for thermodynamics…MAN! So I was thinking to myself…standard temperature pressure eh…so I’m going to need more time plus heat or MOAR HEAT! To melt that shit into shiny ass rosin. Enter…the blowtorch. I turn that thing on barely and micro plane the hash. Then I start lowering the hash covered parchment…towards the heat, slowly, so very slowly. When the hash starts to soften I’m in the zone. Just keep it there until it melts into ooey gooey. Move the parchment around let it melt everything into a goo. yum!
As soon as it cools, start dabbin!!! Hopefully nobody hates me for thinking this up, I thought it was brilliant!
So Ive made some bubble hash back in the day but this freeze drying is all new to me. So I looked around for a freeze dryer and it seems to be about 3000$ Canadian dont have that kinda money. So what im gathering is you can just stick the bubble hash in the freezer to freeze dry. So should i just micro plane it then spread thin on parchment. like what i mean is freeze the chunk use cheese greater and cheese grade the chunk into powder and let it dry in my deep freezer? thanks for your help and input thinking of getting back into it.
I would recommend taking the hash and cutting it into tiny bits with the exacto blade or razor. I think they call it micro planing. Then spread that out in the freezer to dry. The smaller bits dry faster, if you have a large chunk it will take forever.
right on ill have to try it on my next run. thanks man
@JoeCrowe I’m surprised you haven’t put together a little hash freezer thing like those individual pizza cookers. Make a box with an oversized cooling element, insulate the crap out of it and boom. Good weekend project. In the name of science of course.
Yah those are some nice…umm balls? Temple balls right?
just copied frenchys method minus the freeze dry part. but yeah there pretty much temple balls . pretty mush dried with a dehumidifier for 2 weeks to make sure all water is gone nothing worse then rolling it all up and one day pulling a piece off to fuzzy mold. once dried just put hot water into wine bottle and start rolling it out for about a hour folding it over and over then rolling it up into a ball
I’m busy cranking out another batch! Definitely going to get a new drill now, this one is starting to shoot sparks! LOL, I’m sure the batch will turn out fine, but I’ve tossed that unit on the slag heap.
ok here’s the most unique process I have come up with. It’s a better way of making rosin with no equipment except you don’t melt it like I did on the torch. hah hah I wouldn’t really recommend the torch method, but it was quick and easy! You probably want less heat to preserve the terps. ok! you need… lots of patience and some parchment and a non stick pan? Or glass or something… you’ll see.
As I had mentioned earlier I float that shit out. All I can say is I take a lump and micro plane in water. As I disturb the hash chunk it disintegrates into a goo like mixing corn starch and water. Then I thin it out quite a bit. I want there to be just a bit of hash in the water no blobs and thick paste. Hopefully I’ve done it right this time, it’s hard to get a nice balance. Imagine it like getting the gold fines out of black sand. When this shit dries, if I mixed it up right, it’ll be like an orange goo. Cross your fingers and toes! It’s a fiddly process as far as I can tell, I’ll make it more recipe-like, so I can get the same results every time. X water and Y hash spread out over area Z squared. I’m still in early prototype stages. Like a gram of hash and 15ml of water…something like that. I’ll get the measurements later.
ok here’s my regular turn out. Nice and juicy!
reminds me, I’ll probably put a fan on the floated out hash to speed drying…where is that thing?
Feel high just looking at it lol
heh heh yah it should be like 30 grams or something. I made it out of partly-filled bags in the bottom of the freezer. I’m starting to deplete the stores of hash material, finally. Only a few more kilos to go.
