About the third time Ive spent at least 20min just staringvat your beautys…at a loss for words…just Gorgeous and hella jelly across the board Keep em coming!
Hopefully croptober smiles on both of us, it’s looking good so far!
They are doing alright. Trimming more and feeding this morning, I’ll be back with new pics maybe tomorrow or Monday. I forgot my computer at work so it’s hard to post pics in order. They’re not the best, not the worst, just trying to keep up with them.
Thanks for the compliments, makes me worry less
RED ALERT: Bud rot on my Avenue of the Giants. Caught a glimpse of a cola tip with drying leaves. Didn’t take a pic, looked barely different than the others but I touched it and fuckin budrot. Just at the top of the cola, shitterpillar and eggs or something. BT spraying tonight, chopped the cola a foot down and checked the other plants as well as I could.
On the plus side, I tore up the cola that I removed and it really smelled amazing. No evidence of bugs except for the top. BT time!
Damn, sorry to see the damage brother. Are things looking better?(Not that their looking bad, they look great!) What do the eggs look like? If its dark and in with the pillers then its probably their poop, not much better but might help with the worrying? Eggs white in flat masses underside of leaves? I got to hear more about that UV your talkin about, makes em light up? Probably just have a wierd hour or so each morning and evening to look as to not disrupt light cycle? I go out when it rains as it did today and the larvae are out on top of the flowers trying not to drown, big mistake for them! Cant ever get them all. Would use the bt as well but you know I love my mantids, ladybugs, spiders, and other predators too much. Other than that it seems like the perfect solution to pests, are there any other downsides?
I have no idea if they are eggs or poop. In that first photo you can see the little white things I’m talking about. The UV light I tried just to see how bad the problem was. It was weird, I knew there would be some, but I found them pretty much only on the Hawaiian Snow, on one branch in particular. The eggs (more sure than the ones in the bud pics above) are on the leaves by the buds, or on the tips of sugar leaves. I pulled the ones I can and BT’d afterwards. Caught a few live pillars and grasshoppers too.
It’s something I just remembered to try out of the blue. But they light up pretty vividly. I have a flashlight with a dim UV setting for checking bills, and it worked so good I ordered a better one off amazon for $10. I did it just before dawn to avoid jacking with the period.
I’m hoping it works well. It supposedly doesn’t affect anything but caterpillar larvae, washes off fast and is safe to humans. It is bad for the baby pillars to eat, so the idea is to poison them as soon as they hatch and start eating their way into their buds, so they die rather than make it in and destroy things.
It’s a new tool to me I learned about last season after having tons of budrot.
Bud rot sucks, but at least you clipped it early. It looks like you may even get some decent smoke out of it.
The hidden garden…
Avenue of the Giants Cola, smelling now more like burnt rubber or something potent.
Dragon Hashplant, little behind the other indica-leaning strains.
Hella Jelly, clipped a top that I was suspicous of. Not fucking around with those shitterpillars this year. Hella Jelly is starting to lead the pack in terms of delicous smell, I can’t articulate it but lots of fruit coming out now…it smells like a dessert buffet with all kinds of cobblers. Stoked because I was hoping this would come out and it finally is. LOVE the stank on this one now.
Hawaiian Snow, hard to take a pic because she’s taller than I am by a large margin.
Snow-G might be the first to finish. Smells gassy and strong.
Yup, that’ll shut down any back talk! Those are some sexy and curvy ladies, with too much going for them to worry about anything else. Looks like your whole backyard should be called ‘The Avenue of the Giants’… Amazing!
Probably less than two weeks on alot of that? My three or four girls are all spread out in time, as far as can be. Not a bad thing, but thinking I’ll be able to start harvesting some of the Don’s inners and lowers when you are probably starting to finish up! Everything else seems like a month or two away for me. Your plants, even the sativas are much further along and looking very healthy and beautiful, we’re all getting sooo close to harvest, any way we cut it. Good, yet stressful times!
Ohh, dont forget to pick up the Icy Hot for those hands, dont want to f#ck up the modeling gig…you should be getting a call soon, I put a good word in for you!
The UV is a cool idea man! Deff have to be careful, but I like it. A pioneer you are! I have the little one thats on the scope so Im gonna check it out at dusk, not very size efficient but I’m interested to see how well this works. Thanks for the info, as always!
Im weary of the BT but after some quick reading it seems safe for everything but a few kinds of ‘lower life forms’, I see its been used for a long time, definitely seems like one of the best options so far, I’ll keep reading on that one, but yeah, the info so far says its selective, which is hard for me to grasp but Im gonna have to thank you again for something new, I was so focused on the word ‘insecticide’ that I never did any further reading. Keep us posted on your experience please
Hope your having a good one and Happy Growin!
LOL, Snow-G and Hella Jelly are supposed to finish end-September, Avenue of the Giants early October, Hashplant later October and Hawaiian Snow sometime November. It was planned so that I don’t get overwhelmed and everything fits into the drying cabinet. We’ll see. Thanks for the compliments, the ladies have been through a lot with me learning how to take care of them.
Definately give it a shot. It reveals more than you’d expect, the eggs pop out super bright. The caterpillars are pretty easy to see too, but my light was dim so it took forever to scan the plants well. The $10 replacement should make it quite a bit faster to peek at them. I want to minimize the time, for obvious reasons.
BT seemed like the best path for me. I know not everyone agrees with it, but I didn’t use it last year and it was sad to throw that much bud away. We’ll see, but I expect to be tossing much less this time. All of my research has pointed to this, I haven’t read any credible articles against using it, but several for it. Sure, the growers are pretty polarized, but lots of that is based on opinion. Which isn’t bad, I’ll be forming an opinion of my own. We shall see! Obviously I’d prefer not to, but it’s not like I’ll be spraying neem oil anymore, and the pests are more active than ever here as it cools down a bit. Grasshoppers are just assholes, but these caterpillars can destroy the whole crop. Pros and cons, like anything else. Risk balancing.
Have a great day man!
Dang bud, the best laid plans, right? Hopefully you got some buddys if it starts getting to be that overwhelming harvest I jixted ya with or maybe the every couple of days routine will get you through? All I can say if it does get to be alot at once, when its happened to me, decarbing and/or freezing can really come in handy if you run out of space and time. An ISO wash or something similar can also be a harvest saver, if things ever do get to be too hot and heavy. Hopefully they will all be spread out as planned, Im expecting some big bud shots from you soon!
Still wanting to give the uv a shot, just has been raining for like three days here, got to find the right moment/light. Such a cool technique man!
And hey, I feel ya on the BT, I didnt want to use the Seven(on the squash) but I did when it came down to it. The BT sounds worlds better than that crap. I pray all your shiterpillers are gone baby gone! I really respect your opinion and willingness to try different options, I will certainly be listening to your list of pros vs cons. Happy Growin and have an Awesome Day Brother!
I went out with the loupe tonight and the Snow-G is leading the pack, starting to milk up but I expected some more bulking on her. I think I have at least 2, probably 3 weeks on her, the rest are behind at least a week. Hella Jelly and Avenue are still clear and thickening up. The hashplant has at least another month on her, probably 5-6 weeks because I want that to KO me before bed. The Hawaiian Snow still has 6 weeks or more left, but she’s fading more than anything else in the garden. I picked a bunch of dead leaves off her this evening, debating giving her some more nitrogen. More yellow than the others, which are kinda expected to be fading around now. I really don’t know. I’ll post pics tomorrow but I already pulled the really withery, obviously dying/dead leaves off, which I realized was dumb because I should have taken a pic before. They’re on flower stuff, pretty low N but higher in P and highest in K. Because time is short I’ve been using mostly the terp tea, bloom and the high K one.
It’s been hectic here. Tomorrow is the anniversary, so we’re leaving the baby with my parents and heading on a little get-away. Watering really good before we take off, they should make it for 30 hours with no attention.
The nice thing about building the cabinet is that it stays pretty much perfect temp/hum for buds. I can leave them in there a month if I want while I trim at my leisure, but I’m worried about space. I got 4oz from the SAD, I’m probably looking at 6-10oz for each of the “small” big ones and maybe a pound+ from the hashplant and Hawaiian Snow. I’ll just play it by ear. I’ve been entertaining buying some of those grove bags QP or pound size for curing, just because the jars are going to get ridiculous. They already are. Not that I’m complaining I may wrap up packages of an oz each in parchment paper and lightly vaccuum pack them in mylar with some Argon or Nitrogen backfill - it’s going to take me a WHILE to smoke these. I’ve got some regulators already so I’d just need to borrow a bottle from work. I don’t see any reason Ar purge/backfill with a slight vac so they are mechanically stable wouldn’t last a few years in the deep freezer. There I go overcomplicating things again, but it’s really not complicated in the grand scheme. Just more complicated than most I’ve seen.
Just a note: No sign of shitterpillars since the day after the BT. I may spray again on the ones that are still more than 2-3 weeks out from harvest. It hasn’t rained so hopefully it has stayed somewhat effective on there for a while, that’s pretty widely debated. The eggs have to hatch for it to work though, little fu**ers have to eat it.
Thanks for checkin’ in bud, I’ll go peek on your thread now! I appreciate your best wishes, advice, and compliments!
Here’s the “schedule” so far…
Not that I really expect them to stick to the times published by breeders (there’s also some fluctuation in what I thought was beginning of flower, vs what the breeder considers beginning of flower - I’m not running lights that switch period whenever I want), but I think next weekend things are going to start getting interesting around here. Highlighted is already harvested and smokeable, keeping track of the yield because why not. I want to steer my selection for next season based on what I liked/disliked about the plants this season.
At the end of the day, I want a nice pallette of flavors and effects ranging the full breadth of the Sativa-Indica spectrum. That may not actually be the case, but I know I want a daytime weekend pick-me-up, an evening/social gathering/movie watching herb, and a nighttime knock-me-out herb. When I decided to get back into this I really dove in with both feet. I have a serious case of strain envy, I want to grow pretty much everything.
Highlighted is running, white are my current front-runners for next years run. I’m going to resist the urge to seed shop until December/January when I have a good feeling for how everything I grew this season did. I think I’ll cut it down to 3 full-term big girls maybe in 45-50 gallon bags, and a handful of autos or “fast” strains that are done by end-of-August. It was evident to me this year that stakes are a pain in the ass, so I’m going to try for better training next season, try to get a low but broad cover. I’ve got some ideas for how I can accomplish that without ruining my access to the tops.
Part of me now just wants to grow old-school weed that I would have loved to have had access to when I was last a stoner (2003-2007). SAGE, Bubblegum, Blueberry. My favorite sack from my old days was a slightly cherry-ish variety with a nice upbeat high to it, in the days when most everything was really indica-dom cash crop cultivars. It was the only time I called my plug right back and told him I’d buy whatever he had left after I smoked it for a day or two. My hope was that Hella Jelly would scratch that itch. I hope it does! Blueberry I got one time back then too, and really enjoyed that. But that pheno is evidently rare.
I really like to ramble, especially about my weed plants. It’s also nice to have this platform as a sort of journal, I’ll be able to look back on this when I’m ordering seeds and see how much my thoughts drift around. My actual grow journal has gotten really terse and just facts about what I give the plants and why.
Really digging your ramblings brother. The descriptions of everything and how well you’ve planned and thought out your grows is always inspiring, I noticed that your Dragon Hashplant shares some similar genetics that my Snowfire Kush also possess. In fact Im betting if we really dig deep, your Hawaiian Snow genetics could have been part of the Snow Lotus thats also in mine? Of our different cultivars, those seem to be flowering the most similar for sure. Haven’t looked it up yet but Im off to find out now…great info, keep it coming!
Will lose my shit when we get to see next years 50galls all trellised out flat or whatever you got planned. Im certainly already hatching up my own designs and schemes that look more like a little boy’s doodlings, or bathroom graffiti, but I cant help but notice how much random supplies, like pvc pipe and such, already scattered around the property. Definitely gonna build something this winter.
Thank you for checking up on us yesterday🙏 means alot!
And Happy Anniversary to yall! Its kind of funny, my Grand Parent’s Anniversary was on the 1st of September, then my own parents also got married on Sept. 1st, and then… I happened to be born on that same day! Not too crazy but true. Hope yall have/had a wonderful safe weekend!
Interesting, but not surprising. Funny how similar they are looking.
We’ll see what I can cook up. I’ve learned a lot this season in terms of how much they can be manipulated, I think I can get quite a bit more aggressive than I would have guessed. I think I’ll wind up with a U-shaped trellis setup with the two primary branches feeding each leg of the U (pot at the bottom of the U so to speak). Maybe a double-trellis setup with PVC. It’s obvious how important it is to be able to access the whole canopy top/bottom outdoors, especially for IPM, so that’s going to be forefront of my mind. Similar to @Meesh ‘s setup probably. I want to be a little more aggressive to keep the height down though, which would allow me to have a mesh enclosure and maybe a greenhouse roof at a reasonable height. I think throwing together a 12’ long x 8’ wide x 7’ tall poly roof setup with mosquito net sides would help here, especially keeping those moths and grasshoppers at bay. Actually, probably just mosquito netting would be adequate, luckily I have a few months to think about it
The anniversary went great, we enjoyed our little getaway. I briefly checked the plants were still alive yesterday, they seem to be. I’ll post some pictures today to get this thread back to gawking at images
Life is full of neat little coincidences like that - that’s a particularly neat one! Anniversary-Anniversary-Dendro birthday. The other half and I have the same birthday, just 2 years apart. My daughter has the same birthday as my sister.
I’m glad your other half is OK, had me concerned. No problem checking up and sending good vibes her way. Anytime.
Hawaiian Snow: I caved Friday morning and added about 150ppm of N from calcium nitrate. She’s fading faster than I think she should given she’s so early in flower. I’ll be feeding this girl a little different than the rest I think. Sprayed her again with BT due to seeing all the eggs last weekend, and we have plenty of time left on the clock for this one, 6 weeks or more.
Avenue of the Giants: This thing is just turning into branches stuffed full of buds trying to collapse on themselves. Very rubber/wood scent, strong. Smells bizarre to me but pleasant.
Snow-G: I think this is what people mean when they say “gas.” Thickening up.
Hella Jelly: This girl is smelling great. So fruity and light aroma compared to the others that are more gassy or skunky or citrusy. Not great at describing weed terps, they are totally different than the cigar palate I’ve developed over the years. With time…but she is the new favorite.
Dragon’s Hashplant: This smells like weed, strong weed. Don’t know what else to say other than the colas are getting MASSIVE thicc. Got this one with some more BT just because she’s so dense and I’m paranoid and she’s pretty early in flower too…
Cheers guys, have a great Sunday!
Garden is doing well, fed some tea this morning and pulled some samples for analysis. They are smelling good. Avenue of the Giants, in particular, is looking closer to done than expected to the naked eye, prompting some concern because I haven’t prepared for harvest yet.
They’re all supposed to be quick outdoor (7-9 week) strains and we’re around mid-week-7 right now. All are from Humboldt Seed Co/Twenty20 which are reputable outdoor breeders, ideally providing accurate flower times. I fear the finish line is closer than I expected it, but I may be totally wrong.
Here we go: The most hated question of the online cannabis community. “When will it be ready?” Now featuring trichome pictures! I think I have a tendency to let these go too long, I’d really like some feedback on how these are looking. I know they aren’t ready and I’m not impatient, just want to nail harvest window on each this time rather than going a week past prime like I did on the Critical Kush Auto.
I’ll be checking with the microscope every Tuesday/Friday morning until it’s time and posting for feedback. Please help the noobie here
Avenue of the Giants. Cloudy/clear, a week or two more probably? Hopefully 3? I’ll be checking again every few days. Aiming for balanced effect, so probably targeting 10-20% ambering? Maybe a little less?
Hella Jelly. Mix of clear/clouding up yet again. I’m looking for a more daytime effect here, so probably chopping when all cloudy? Maybe a week to go?
Snow-G. Mix cloudy/clear. Balance/heavy effect desired, so going to wait for some more amber than AotG I think.
Thanks!
Still soliciting harvest advise. Clipped some early bud rot this evening (damn shitterpillars) because I’m always looking for it now and took advantage of those buds to take another microscope look. Please feel free to give me your opinions, I’ve harvested several times this season but they were smaller and had less energy invested in them. I’d love to get this right.
Avenue of the Giants BELOW
I think the Avenue of the Giants is ready or really close. I can’t do the deed until Friday, but she looks done, she STANKS like burnt rubber and a forest fire, and she’s more done than the little sample bud I took yesterday. I also took a few lowers to compare, they’re looking good? Not as ripe but close. The tops are the top images, the bottom, well, it’s the bottom image. Please confirm or deny…I can do a partial harvest but I’d really prefer to buck the whole thing at once. I don’t have a problem spreading it out now that I think about it. Maybe I’m way off base and she needs some significant more time, this is a few weeks earlier than anticipated. There are still some fresh pistils but the majority are dry.
Hella Jelly BELOW
I’m paranoid about waiting too long on this, I really want this to deliver an energetic effect like the strain description. Not sure how much I trust that, but hey, that’s why I wanted to grow it Any opinions on this? She’s a pretty airy plant so the tops look like the bottoms, it’s shockingly uniform, thanks to the defol, no doubt. Thanks @Dendro
Snow-G BELOW
I think she needs at least another week or more, not going to sweat myself on this one. No ambering yet.
The dry cabinet is ready to accept payload. Plan as of right now is harvest the uppers at least on the Avenue Friday morning.
Hey brother, sorry, have been in a funk, and its been hard to focus, I think you know me bro! I would probably be starting to strip any nice looking lowers and inners. Or the reverse but yeah, Id definitely be snippin a bunch off each plant most likely, every three or four days till cabinet is full, then let the rest just chill and observe. They look amazing bro! Bet they smell even better…Ill be joining in on the fun soon, I just have to get these three biggins either fixed up or get em out of here. Ya know, move on! Im a little baby when it comes to break ups and if I dont sort this out, I think the wife might leave me for real, oh well, Marys always there…
How are you going, dude? Have you decided what you are going to do? I bet there’s still some life in 'em. Or at least some more to learn.
I like the idea of just adding the stuff that’s ripe to the cabinet as it looks ready. I’ll think about that some more. I’m going to have to label the trays as they go in with strain/date so I can keep track. Probably unnecessary but a minor bit of trackability. I think I can easily identify each by smell, but date will be harder to keep tabs on.
EDIT: It’s pretty clear I need to harvest these things in multiple stages for a consistent result. Going out twice a week and gathering the buds that look just right is going to probably give the best overall result, even though it’ll be a bigger hassle with the wash buckets. Hassle is what I signed up for, although I prefer my hassles to be premeditated and on my own schedule I didn’t expect these things to actually grow this big.
Cheers guys, have a great day! I think I’ll be back tomorrow late morning with a few cola chop pics
It seems like its harder to judge with outdoor. Or maybe its just me, but I think I let my fastest tangie go a little long my first year waiting for amber tricomes that never came. Last year mildew dictated everything. This year, when it says its going to rain the next day, I’ll just cut anyone who looks done enough to me by look/feel.
