Old School Heady Glass Appreciation Thread

Maybe I should ask the guy to make up a scrap batch at his leisure with some OG decorations for a group buy or server auction hmmmm

I might have to snag one of those galaxy pipes. He’s got some really cool work

The man’s really got it going on! I love garage woodworkers, I used to work in a bakery with a Puerto Rican guy who had a lathe and made custom pens from exotic stabilized hardwoods and the nice stainless, silver, or gold insert kits to make a Cross insert twist ballpoint, the kind of thing that would cost you $150 in a store and he would sell them to us for like $50. I try to support small makers whenever I can and wood pipes are a niche I think many of us love but it’s not quite the same scene (yet) as heady borosilicate glass with lampworking. It’s cool that he’s getting millies and other glass from someone he knows to do inserts tho, the neat thing to me about wood is how it lends itself to being the base for hybrid material construction that’s really interesting to look at and touch.

I think my next one from him when I find the money will be one of these cobs:

Yeah those are sweet too. I might have to snag something from him next week. My brother used to have some cool wood pipes he picked up from different festivals. He was a glass blower so when he was setup I had it made for pieces. He could whip up a really cool spoon in just a few minutes.

Dude I miss living with a blower and hanging out watching them work then the homie being like this one’s the worst of the batch I don’t want to send it out but you should have it it works great. Those were the days

Yeah it was awesome. He had his garage all setup at one point and I would spend hours with him out there watching him make stuff. He learned from a super talented dude that was one of the first people to do the wigwag designs. Lotta good memories with him puffin on cherry Ak watching him do his thing.

I was on Chemdog’s site the other day, saw no glass to be had. Guess I waited too long…

But now I want one…

Nice nice, my roomie was a tour head who stayed local mostly regional fests and then Vibes and a few others on the east coast. He was working at a famous Murano glass blowers facility, that sorta production line thing cranking out expensive art glass under the supervision of the big name guy. Big name guy started his day with a fatty behind the warehouse so he was fine with people using the kiln and benches/torches after hours for their own projects but he eventually got setup at home so it was easier to just sit down and crank out small torch pieces that he could just sink into a big slow cooker left on high full of vermiculite afterwards. Real crusty vibes with that trick but it worked great to slow cool the pipes the way they’re supposed to be tempered.

That’s awesome. I think that was the toughest part waiting for the pieces to sit in the kiln lol. Wish I still had something from him.

Me toooo all I have left that survived the years is a foot long dildo he made when he was trying to get into that because there’s big money in handmade glass sex toys. His first batch was absolutely ridiculous and we were all like show us your crazy dick man these don’t look right. The enormous, silly one I have got tossed off the second story porch, bounced off the street and into the neighbors bushes (imagine if it had gone through their window :sob: ). I went and got it and damned if borosilicate doesn’t give a fuck, it had a slight internal stress crack and one small chip where it hit. I keep it as a funny memory and also a weird discussion piece on a shelf.

Yeah he got into the dildo game for a bit  he had one he made it had a rotating bumpy base he called it the juicer lol. There’s still a bunch of people out there that only knew him as dildo Dave.

Yea the site seems to be mostly for swag, I don’t think dude gets on the torch much these days, but he’ll throw up a couple chillums every once and a while around like $2-300 a piece, they go quick though so you gotta be Johnny on the spot. I’ve never had the extra cash laying around when he throws some
Up, someday maybe though

As a woodworker, I always keep my scraps for smaller projects. I looked at his site and he has some cool designs, but I like this one the best. A group buy would be of interest.

Nothing crazy style wise but the I how got it is special. After the party ended summer 95 I bummed around NY till spring 96 and headed to Alaska with a friend to work and travel (that’s another story) That Fall I was working my way south to SF and stayed in Portland for a while to hit a Black Crowes show. Was staying in a youth hostel and put some GD on the radio in the room. Ended up hanging with a dude who was hustling who knows what between Portland, SLC and SF… dude saw my tape stash and proposed a trade, 6 tapes for his spoon and the bag. He needed new tunes for the ride and I had been burning out on my stash so we made the deal.

Went into Burlington and swung in to say what’s up to my buddy who runs a dispensary and glass shop downtown and he offered me a pretty nice discount on this Papa Smurf hammer, Couldn’t say no to a local cat doing the real old school work. At least this time I remembered to take some photos in the lightbox before I sparked it up :call_me_hand:t2:
