Overgrow.com: Let's Talk About the Future

Good morning OG I noticed more of my posts have been removed. They were not off topic and there was no reason to remove my posts. What’s going on? Are we just removing posts ?

We just have a few middle management types that don’t have much of a home life it seems and the rest are hella cool.

Thank You @Sbeanonnamellow

Iv tried to type up a very similar post but could not do so as well as you just did.

Bottom line, if you hold no respect for others views, dont expect others respect yours. Insist on derailing, dont whine about flags.

So… does flagging automatically hide posts from view? Or does flagging bring posts to moderators’ attention so they can make a determination whether or not to hide the post from view?

I was reading @Sbeanonnamellow’s post and tried to “like” it but it must have been flagged literally as I was reading n
Post seems absolutely relevant to the topic of discussion :man_shrugging: i see no reason why it should be hidden if it’s on topic

So this makes me think that the “flag” feature has a very low threshold for being able to permanently hide posts

@LemonadeJoe @TeamOG
Is a post completely hidden after receiving only one single flag?
Is there any manual involvement by moderators to review flagged posts in order to determine if they need to be hidden or not?

If the system automatics hides posts after only one flag then it seems like it can easily be abused

If folks would like to speak of this flagging topic, perhaps someone should open a thread specific to that discussion. This honesly feels like it has become an argument between off-topic posters and flaggers, which seems unproductive with posts going up and down repeatedly. It’s clear many have an opinion that they want to share, which is totally cool, but such opinions wouldn’t be flagged as off-topic if in a thread about said topic. Just a thought on how this could move forward in a more productive way. All we are doing by having the discussion here is creating more work for the mods which isn’t really fair to them. Just a thought. :v:

Are new members required to become supporters now? I see a good number of new members with the word supporter next to their name which I believe you get when you donate money to the site on a regular basis.

Is it still voluntary or do new members have to donate?

It’s voluntary

Who knows what’s going an if it changes it changes

It’s still voluntary @LoveDaAutos

It is because they added that button on top of side bar.

New users have been to other sites , they know OG is worth supporting.

I really believe so cause just look at the number of new comers coming in daily

Discussions about the flagging system are off-topic here, so a number of posts were removed. I see you’ve started a new topic about the flagging system, which is a more appropriate place to discuss it. Thanks.

Please don’t use a pinned topic with a pretty serious subject like OG’s future for general chat. That’s why we have a new chat - the real deal.

It’s kind of bizarre what happened. First, a bunch of off-topic comments, then a bunch of flags, then a lot of work for mods, and then the discussion about whether we even need flags.

The truth is, we need to follow some basic guidelines (like sticking to the topic) for everyone’s benefit. If we don’t, it’ll just make everything harder to follow.

It’s totally fine when a post sparks a cool new idea along the way. But, when more people start responding to this side conversation, it’s usually helpful to split it off into its own topic. You can even make things easier for the mods by deciding when it’s the right time to do that yourself.

The timestamp next to a post in the right top corner of a post is there to help. Just click “New Topic,” and it will automatically link back to the original discussion.

I have a few ideas for the overgrow.com website, i do foss programming

  1. a read only copy of the forums using the nntp protocol (that way we can access the forums, but without posting (to prevent spam and bots), at the cost of bandwidth for photos. we can access news.overgrow.com on stuff like pan2 or xnews or newbin, or people can write their own custom clients and sell/distribute them to the community on Application · GitHub stores. please dont do a read/write server of overgrow.com seeing as the socket topology is inherently insecure. it works like this, you connect, you can read threads, and you can download all photos directly on the clients device!
  2. overgrow can make a tight knit group of seed breeders and work with seed banks such as attitude or north seed bank and sell directly on their site and link from overgrow, and we can possibly post everything in a public thread
  3. escrow service based on overgrow.com volunteers. if I want to buy some seeds from userX, ill goto escrow.overgrow.com, pay the fee, and when everything clears, userX gets the money. basically we need people to check the amounts, see if the tracking numbers dispersed, etc etc, this is only for legal countries such as usa/canada… I think you can write web software that checks per country per order, this one is complicated
  4. possibly an online overgrow store (premade sts, clothing gear, books, bulk hemp seeds, etc)
  5. possibly an online clone store for cool shit like good clones, using escrow in legal states, with profits going towards site and community and charity… I dont recommend this because it gets complicated (ie some guy wanting 500 clones in jersey and ripping you off)… I dont suggest taking clones from random people on the forums without some kind of verification

what does everyone think?

Why not just bring it back to bbs days. We dial directly into OG.

Maybe a weed forum just isn’t a massive cash cow. Crazy idea these days, I know everything has to be “passive income” and whatnot, but god forbid we work actual jobs and then choose which hobbies are important enough to us to devote our free time to.

That is great. I will become a donor next month since I dont have the time to participate or follow along the different auctions or events of that kind. The important thing is to contribute to the site and not remain merely a taker. Others dont do either but give away free seeds so, in the balance, it is mostly about having the right attitude.

Sittin here injured it was the first site I found. No need to look further. As soon as I’m back on my feet. I will be supporting, too great of a bunch of people not to help keep it breathing.
