Been a while since I updated this thread. A couple months ago, my Jeep started over heating again. About three years ago, water pump went out on me, so I replaced that along with the thermostat. Last year I flushed my cooling system and replaced my radiator hoses. Then a couple months ago, the return hose got caught in the fan and chewed up, so I replaced that as well. After that, it would randomly over heat.
These XJs are known for over heating, so I ordered up a three core aluminum radiator with three electric fans. Last weekend I removed the old radiator and the clutch fan, then I installed the new radiator. When it came to wiring up the electric fans, I found out the provided thermostat switch was not the right size. The provided relay kit was rated for 30-amps and the fans are rated for about 36 amps. I ordered up a new thermostat switch and a 70-amp relay kit for the fans.
This weekend I got the thermostat housing tapped for the new thermostat switch. I installed a new thermostat and the housing and started some of the wiring for the grounds.
I have had a three row before they are not as efficient, also be sure to check the cfm on those fans as the stock clutch fan and electric are rather strong and many aftermarket replacements are lower in cfm.
I just installed a new cold case radiator and threw out a brand new three row.
I have a 4.8 liter stroker in mine with 26lb injectors running 50psi instead of 39 and a 62mm throttle body
J.E.E.P Just empty every pocket
Also every hesco part Iâve bought has failed rather quickly , if you ever need to adjust the fuel pressure on a pre 96 donât get the hesco adjustable regulator, instead get a different fuel rail with the vacuum return on it that allows you to use a holly or edelbrok regulator, most wonât need to add fuel pressure to there builds but if you do avoid the headaches Ive had and change the rail and regulator.
Psa donât mess with the fuel systems unless you never wanna pass smog again
Also Iâm shocked that the stock computer and map sensor can handle the injectors and regulator im using ? Any buddy here a fuel systems expert ?
Thanks for the advice, so far this is definitly an upgrade over what I had.
I got everything temporarily wired up and filled and burped the radiator. Thermostat switch is working properly, the fans come on and go off within the proper temperature ranges.
Took it for a short (30 minute) drive and monitored the coolant temperature and battery voltage. The temp never got much higher than 210° F and the voltage never dropped below 13.5 V.
I did have some clearance issues, the plastic fan shroud made some minor contact with the bolts from the clutch fan. After a drive around the block, the bolts removed the excess plastic for me.
Now I need to mount the fuse and relay in the engine compartment, they are just free floating for the moment. I also have to run the relay trigger to an ignition source so the fans turn off when I turn off the vehicle. I temporarily hooked it up to the battery and it continues to run when the vehicle is off until it cools off.
Keep an eye on them fans! Iâve heard nothing too good about the triple fan set ups on some of the pages im on. My 91 used to get hot, so I wired the electric fan to a toggle switch and would turn it on while on the trails. The clutch fan was typically enough on its own for daily driving.
Another backtarder (was supposed to be backyarder but that works) is spacers on the hood hinges or louvered vents.
I keep seeing all these kids driving around in cherokees with proper lift kits and mods and shit, it makes me miss the old days when you couldnât buy so many accessories so you had to make shit work lol. 18 year old me would have killed for some of the pavement princess jeeps kids are driving today
Poison Spider makes a really nice looking louver setup, but dang its a lot of cutting on the hood. Installed two for friends so far. Access to a plasma cutter (vs a grinder w/ cut-off wheel) will make installation 200x easier.
Iâve had the jeep hood high, water in the cab, and it still ran⌠not to mention I didnât let off the gas. But Iâm just saying. Does wonders, but donât forget to extend your breathersâŚ
