ReikoX's 1998 Jeep XJ Rebuild

Looks like it’s about ready to go. Do you still do a lot of welding?

33’s were on it when I bought it, changed back to 31s myself.
I almost needed a ladder LOL.

Haha, I’m on 35s and I’m only 5’7"

I wouldn’t mind putting 35’s on the XJ but I want stronger differentials and a motor swap first hehehe. I was pondering the Cummins R2B I think it’s called. 10K though so a wee bit pricey and beyond my current budget. Such is life LOL

If you have the time and fab skills a junkyard LS can be had for a few thousand. That’s what my buddy did to his TJ. Of course now he’s having to put 1-ton axles in it and 40s. Just Empty Every Pocket.

I look at my 91 dodge w250 4x4 and sometimes I get the urge to pull her dana 60’s and convert them for them XJ hehehe
But I love my truck and won’t do that to her till her frame is toast

I love the way this looks. I’ve always been a sucker for little cars on big all terrain tires. I saw an old 911 done like that and it was sweet, too. I’ve been trying to convince the wife to let me do this to the GLK. I think she just wants to sell it and move on. I know if I turn the Benz into an off road hunting truck, we’ll never be able to sell it.

I’m considering putting a 6 inch long arm lift kit on my xj but might have to go with a 4.5 so the girlfriend can still get in it :joy:
I have a 94 Cherokee with a 4.8 liter stroker (forged internals , kb low dish pistons)
Custom aluminum fuel rail
Edelbrock FPR
26 pound injectors at 50psi running 14.5 AFR ( to be tuned soon)
Over sized throttle body
New style intake manifold
Headers
Master cylinder/power booster upgrade
Dana 44 rear axle with cable activated ox locker
Body armor
Rolled fenders
Heavy duty rear bumper with tire carrier
Brown dog engine mounts
DUI ignition
High flow water pump and thermostat
Brass copper summit 2 row radiator

Currently fabricating some self made flat metal fender flares , wish me luck.

Before the lift I must get
better rims
Front bumper with winch
Going to do a custom headliner
Seat covers
Gas tank skid plate

After all of that I’m aiming for a Dana 44 in the Front with a locker to match the one in the back and some type of internal role cage
I will probably be dead before I afford all this but it’s something to work towards :joy:

That Dana 30 front axle your running right now is probably terrified of your motor. :v:

Yes I have zero faith in the front axle :joy: This motor is just getting past the break in stage and the axle will have to go before it sees 33 inch tires and the rocky trails we have here in the sierras . I think the transmission might be ok for awhile but they make a transmission and transfer case rebuild kit that provides tougher internal parts and it may be required at some point lol

Just found this thread and hearing what you’ve done it’s… staggering. I had to laugh when I saw the first interior shot with the radio gone and headliner pinned up and I thought put the steering wheel on the other side and it looks like mine! Although I did pull the fabric down. Now I have brown snow on me every day!

Impressive motor build… you assemble yourself?

If your gonna go with a D44 front axle and larger than 33’s you might consider full width paired axles. The XJ rear 44 has a smaller tube diameter, mine had to be heated and straightened when I swapped it into my ZJ. truss it at minimum.

I don’t have any plans to go bigger then 33 but axle trusses are in order both front and back , I’m looking at some nice lift kits that come with frame stiffeners and all the other little goodies like extended brake lines , Tom woods sye and driveshaft etc
axle trusses are a def must as is a heavy duty steering upgrade.
I don’t plan on doing any extreme rock bouncing but am more building to do light rock crawling and trail running and have it perform well in the process.
Also I’m 6 foot 4 so when I stand next to a Jeep at stock height it just looks small and makes me unhappy :joy:
@GCBudz i did not assemble it but rather had it built at a performance machine shop in the next town over.
They ironically specialize in Toyota builds but I’ve known the guy sense before he had his own shop so he allowed my Jeep to trespass in his yota territory.
They make custom intake manifolds and various other parts for Toyotas that don’t exist anywhere else.

We just got done dropping that tank and getting a new fuel pump installed. Broke a one way hose on the tank set us back a day. Then the brake light sensor ended up dead. So we changed that out. I washed her and cleaned her up. Got all my gauges working well. And here she is ready for hunting season people!!! I had to just empty every pocket for those parts.

Teah, my XJ needs motor mounts and another exaust header. Should do an oil change and the rear diff is leaking too. Not willing to spend the $ and an afternoon in 100+ degree weather. Maybe now that it’s cooing off.

We did all the work in the 90 degree heat. Fuck that noise. That and washing it. Could only do 1/8ths at a time shit would dry so fast.

nice to see a YJ getting the love.
I miss my 92. I rebuilt that jeep from the frame up. Wish I had taken more pics before i sold it to my buddy’s son’s friend. Might have to look for another one to build.

My 89 XJ … was supposed to be the wife’s rig but after a mechanic reassembled my front end after replacing a bent track bar and bent front drive shaft as well as tie rods and ends, pitman arm, bushings all around… the jeep experienced an insane case of death wobble that nearly put me off the road and ruined one of my 10ply bfg kto2 tires. The shop owner is a good friend… the mechanic got fired… my jeep got redone by a younger guy new to the shop… he does excellent work. The wife won’t drive it now though… she was too freaked out from the death wobble experience. LOL
So it’s been mine ever since.
Hunting season is days away and would’t ya know it… engine is doing dumb shit.
starts and runs like a bag of hammers… like it’s firing on 2 cyclinders… does that for a random length of time and then just suddenly runs smooth. I’m hoping it is a spark issue so am gonna replace the whole ignition system from coil to spark plugs. Hopefully that solves my problem… or it;s a motor rebuild at the worst time of the year… hunting season
